First & Last 038

Can you guess the movie from its first and last shot?

The answer is after the jump...

Figured you needed an easy one for a change. Yes, it's Casino Royale (2006) one of the very best Bond movies and the rare case of a reboot (ugh that term) not being a gross useless thing but instead a stylish and welcome change of pace. (I had totally forgot that it starts in black and white, had you?) Of course what it wrought for the 007 franchise ended up being a problem -- these things shouldn't be dependent on the one before them like a linear tv show -- but that was years away.

And I am happy to brag again that I knew Daniel Craig would make an excellent Bond before this movie arrived while everyone else was kvetching about this 'nobody' getting the part. But if they'd been paying attention, he was already striking awesome poses onscreen with hints of danger and already riveting to watch. See Love is the Devil and Layer Cake and The Mother and Munich and Sylvia and so on...

I never bought him as Bond for a minute and only one of his Bond is worth anyones time and that's Skyfall.

I grew up with Pierce as my bond and Daniel Craig took some getting used to. But, he was amazing in the role, and brought a new depth and muscular force to the role. I find Quantum and Spectre to be pretty bad films, but even he finds a way to shine in those films.

I'd also add Road to Perdition among his pre-Bond performances that showed that he had immense talent.

This was the first James Bond film I had seen in the theaters as I had seen nearly all of them up to that point on TV and cable as it was something I grew up on as my dad was a big fan of the film series. The moment he first saw the film on TV, he fucking loved Daniel Craig as he rated this, Skyfall, and Spectre in high regard as he thought it was the closest thing to the films Sean Connery did. It's a shame he didn't live long enough to see No Time to Die as I'm sure he would've enjoyed it.

grew up in Beirut in the 80s. James Bond was like deity. Connery and Moore or bust. Brosnan never did it for me. Daniel Craig's Casino Royale is spectacular. It's first Bond movie to evoked the same feeling i had as a child discovering a new Bond movie. It had that magic, grandiosity and effortless quality.

I'm mostly in agreement with Joe G on Casino Royale. It took some time for me to warm up to Craig- he looks great but everything else took a bit. Then I started to wonder if he was getting afterglow from me due to Eva Green aka Vesper Lynd aka best Bond woman ever. Green was so great that she haunts every subsequent Craig Bond movie. Literally important plot points were built around her. She cast long shadows and I don't think the other movies recovered from that. Quantum was flat out bad and I thought Skyfall was overrated. Spectre and NTTD had their moments but I was put off that Craig really just wanted his Bond experience to be over (I thought it showed in his performance)
