First & Last 003
We're bringing back one of our greatest hits like an aging band on tour.
CAN YOU GUESS THE MOVIE FROM ITS FIRST AND LAST SHOTS?
If you heard the sound there, you'd immediately know the answer but the last shot (after the jump) will surely give it a way...

Yes it's one of the saving graces of 80s cinema, Little Shop of Horrors (1986) adapted from the iconic Off-Broadway smash and currently streaming on Max. The movie arrived in a time when the culture just wasn't appreciating movie musicals but it holds up. The first shot there, kicks off with the opening note of "Skid Row" which is a perfect first number for a movie musical. Don't deny it.
Little Shop of Horrors was nominated for just two Oscars for Best Visual Effects and Best Original Song ("Mean Green Mother from Outer Space" which it lost to Aliens and Top Gun's "Take My Breath Away" respectively. Those losses are understandable but it really should have been up for other Oscars, too: Ellen Greene, Steve Martin, Best Costume Design, Best Art Direction!
How often have you seen this gem and what's your favourite song?

I think I must have seen this…geez, well into the dozens of times, anyway. Favorite number is tough, but I will say that I listen to the soundtrack often enough that it makes it weird to see/hear the differences between the movie and the album. I listen to Don’t Feed The Plants a lot; I really like The Meek Shall Inherit; I guess if I had to pick a single number, though, it would have to be Skid Row (it really is a perfect opener).
My favorite thing about this movie, though, is that it’s the first (live action) musical movie I was ever able to get my then six year old son to sit through, and he was very much Into It. He still just breaks out into songs from the show in the car, at the table, you name it. (Usually Dentist, Da Doo, or the title number.)
E Greene singing "Suddenly Seymour" is pure magic. LOVE LOVE LOVE
Suddenly Seymour gets all the love, but Skid Row is the number that will always have my heart.
I love this film. It's insane as hell as my favorite song is "I Want to Be a Dentist" while my favorite scene is with Bill Murray as the masochistic patient.
I heard the planned remake with Taron Egerton, Scarlett Johansson, and Chris Evans has fallen apart though I do want to see it but instead of having Johansson as Audrey, I would've gone with someone else and have Johansson as the masochistic patient.
I've only seen the movie twice, but I've seen it on off-Broadway a handful of times with Jonathan Groff, Jeremy Jordan and Conrad Ricamora as Seymour. Hoping to see it again before Matt Doyle leaves soon.
Agreed that Steve Martin should’ve gotten a Best Supporting Actor nomination for this. It’s easy to forget this because it’s been decades since he’s done anything in the movies even remotely Oscar-worthy, but he genuinely could have gotten 3 or 4 nominations in the ‘80s and I wouldn’t have argued.
ellen greene should've been nominated, ellen greene should've won
how the hell did the golden globes ignore her??
the build-up in 'skid row' is sensational
Perhaps Ellen Greene was cheated of her deserved Oscar nomination by the happy ending imposed on the film. Cutting Audrey’s death scene and her rousing reprise of Somewhere That’s Green as the plant devours her robbed Greene of that memorable moment that lingers after seeing the stage version.
Without that bravura finish to cinch the attention of awards voters, it seems easier to understand how Jane Fonda could come from behind to snatch her seventh nomination for her solid work as alcoholic actress Alex Sternberg in The Morning After.
