"Succession" Leads 2023 Emmy Nominations

UPDATED WITH CREATIVE ARTS NOMINATIONS

By Christopher James

The Emmy nominations have arrived, and a few shows have a lot to be happy about. Succession earned a whopping 27 nominations for its final season, only 5 nominations behind the record-holder for most nominations in a given year (Game of Thrones). The good news only continued for HBO, as two other shows from the network earned over 20 nominations (The Last of Us - 24 nominations; The White Lotus - 23 nominations). Some categories were completely dominated by HBO, such as the Supporting Actor in a Drama category, which sports four men from Succession up against 4 men from The White Lotus.

On the comedy front, the incumbent Apple TV+ winner Ted Lasso that many pundits thoughts was fading instead ruled the day with 21 nominations. Right behind it was a previous winner The Marvelous Mrs. Maisel with 14 nominations and a pair of new shows - The Bear with 13 nominations and Wednesday with 12 nominations. The Limited Series field is now neck and neck between two very different Netflix shows - Beef and Dahmer - Monster: The Jeffrey Dahmer Story.

My favorite nominations:
-Hiam Abbass even though she was criminally underused but she made the most of it.
-Claire Danes for giving the best performance by any actor this past year.
-F. Murray Abraham because he gave the best male performance from The White Lotus and he was also the most interesting male character. I was afraid they’d pass him over.

My favorite snub might be Domhnall Gleeson because he was being campaigned in supporting when he was in fact the main character, the titular Patient!

jessica williams - i’ve been a fan since she was on the daily show and she kept me watching ‘shrinking’

sad that ‘what we do in the shadows’ was so underappreciated

There should be a rule where there can be a maximum of 2 nominees from the same per show in each category.

To have 8 nominees in a category from only 2 shows is beyond ridiculous.

thrilled for Maisel and Beef. Supporting categories need an overhaul even i can't disagree with many of the choices. We were just blessed with such good TV weren't we. Im glad The Crown fell - season 5 was shockingly below the level. Im sad Jesse Eisenberg wasn't nominated - i thought he did a fantastic job leading that show. Last, The Other Two is just so unde-rappreciated, i hope it becomes Cult status.

Years ago a quality dramatic program set during the Holocaust was a guarantee of a nomination. Today’s snub of A Small Light is shocking. For me, Beef and A Small Light are the two exemplary limited series for the television season.

I agree with David. It should be two nominees maximum per category for each show.

I’m annoyed for Selena Gomez. I’m not saying Rachel and Christina aren’t worthy nominees, but they do get stuck on autopilot with certain nominees. Steve Martin was snubbed too so I feel slightly less bad for her (she definitely should’ve been nominated for season 1, but I sense they were turning their noise up at her, so I thought she’d have a better shot this time around). I do hope she gets a nod at some point, she really grounds the trio with a dry, young humor that balances the more classic zest that Steve Martin and Martin Short offer.

Other than that, not much to say. Pretty expected results. Two shows from a nominee pool of eight is indeed ridiculous.

A lot of surprising snubs: Steve Martin, Harrison Ford, Kevin Costner, Christina Ricci, Lily Rabe, Elizabeth Olsen, Domhnall Gleeson, Shirley MacLaine, Hope Davis, Selena Gomez (again!) and the most painful to me Justine Lupe, aka Dear Willa.
In the end, I hope "Succession" wins it all!

NO.
DEFINITELY NO.
If deserved, it's totally fine.

PS: About "The White Lotus", James, Tabasco and that Plaza didn't deserve, but it's another conversation.

These nominations feel pretty solid. I'm not a Succession fan, but it had a buzzy, well loved season. It's the frontrunner.

I don't think there should be limits on categories, but I do think the White Lotus/Succession domination is a real sign that voters, above all else, really enjoy watching HBO. I absolutley LOVE that they nominated Simona Tabsco ("let's fun"). But, you really had to love the White Lotus to go that deep into actors on the show.

I think the Comedy Lead Actress category is stacked. I'm really happy Brosnahan and Applegate made it in. They were always going to, but it's great to see their excellent work rewarded.

Very happy that Keri Russell's star performane was rewarded. If there isn't a succession sweep, I could voters rewarding her if they're a bit cold on Lynskey or if she wins the guest emmy. Keri Russell is quite overdue - Felicity premiered in 1998!

I'm still shocked that Harrison Ford got snubbed when his co-stars got in. Segel was brilliant and went to new places as an actor, and Jessica Williams handled some tricky material well. But it feels wrong that they didn't nominate Ford given how much dry humor and pathos he lent the show.

I'm really happy for Joel Kim Booster, who wrote a great Austen adaptation. Also glad to see James Marsden make it in. I think he could win - he's just so good and his show overperformed.

I hope Debicki wins, but Coolidge, who is deserving, feels unstoppable.

I get goosebumps thinking of that Maisel scene in the finale where she and Susie go back & forth onstage saying "four minutes" and you just feel like you're on the cusp of magic happening and you hope with all your might that her hard work finally pays off or she's done for good.

The most obvious and egregious snubs were Elizabeth Olsen and Harrison Ford. Shocked that neither made it in.

Agree with the poster above re: A Small Light. Watching it now and it's riveting and emotionally wrenching. In 1996 it would've swept the entire ceremony.

I understand the frustration with the nominations for The White Lotus, which was very good though not brilliant as Season 1. But Succession is just far and away the best thing on tv, and the critiques against the multiple nominations for it are just lazy. This is not 10-15 years ago, when we had multiple all-time greats competing against one another.

July 13, 2023 | Registered Commenterjules

I thought I liked Obi-Wan Kenobi more than most, but how it got nominated over A Small Light is beyond me. No one watched the latter? It was my favorite TV of the year.
The nominations make me feel like voters don't really watch much TV. So little variety in drama, especially.

Forgot to add that I'm very, very happy for the Jury Duty nominations. I had such a great time with that silly show, with such a pure ending. These nods were far from guaranteed, so I'm thrilled.

So much unexpected love for Prey. That made me happy. Same with the nominations for Swarm and Guillermo del Toro's Cabinet of Curiosity.

I'm not surprised Wednesday picked up so many nominations in tech categories. The show is gorgeous. Really strong design work.

@Cash. Exactly. I've been saying this for years; they absolutely do not watch much television. Otherwise we would see some very deserving, refreshing, innovative work in front of and behind the screen being rewarded instead of the same five comedies or same five dramas. I mean, those acting nominations blow big giant chunks, because for multi-season shows, some of those noms are BARELY in the season being nommed -- cough BRIAN COX cough.

However, none of us will be watching much new television shortly...you go, SAG-AFTRA.

Fav noms; Jessica Williams, Bad Sisters noms, Beef noms, Trash Man song from Maisel (single best musical theater performance I've seen all year)

Egregious snubs: too many to name, but let's start with Selena Gomez. WTF?

July 13, 2023 | Registered CommenterPam

No nods for Selena Gomez and ERW. Ms. Marvel only gets 3 nods for its technical work. BOO!!!!!!

July 13, 2023 | Registered Commenterthevoid99

Wouldn't the record be "Roots" with 37 nominations?
