First & Last 026

Can you guess the movie from its first and last shot?

The answer is after the jump...

An easy one this morning. I bet the theme song was playing in your head as you looked at the images. Did you have "The Time of Your Life" with Dirty Dancing (1987)? And when did you first see it? It was a sleeper hit in cinemas in 1987 earning back 10 times its budget but it then went on to years and years of even bigger popularity on cable. Times were different back then. Of the top 10 highest grossing pictures that year only one (ONE!) was a sequel. The top grossing films in '87 (some nostalgia if you lived through it) were...

  1. Three Men and a Baby
  2. Fatal Attraction - 6 Oscar nominations including Best Picture
  3. Beverly Hills Cop II -1 Oscar nomiantion
  4. Good Morning, Vietnam - 1 Oscar nomination
  5. Moonstruck -6 Oscar nominations including Best Picture and 3 wins
  6. The Untouchables - 4 Oscar nominations and 1 win
  7. The Secret of My Success
  8. Stakeout
  9. Lethal Weapon - 1 Oscar nomination
  10. The Witches of Eastwick - 2 Oscar nominations
  11. Dirty Dancing - 1 Oscar win Best Original Song "(I've Had) The Time of My Life"
  12. Predator - 1 Oscar nomination
  13. Throw Momma From the Train - 1 Oscar nomination
  14. Dragnet
  15. La Bamba
  16. RoboCop - 2 Oscar nominations
  17. Outrageous Fortune
  18. Broadcast News -7 Oscar nominations including Best Picture
  19. The Living Daylights
  20. Eddie Murphy: Raw

Movies used to have wow audiences and build word of mouth instead of being hits automatically due to IP familiarity.

Dirty Dancing is now streaming on Paramount+

I've seen this movie approx a million times so of course I got it from the first shot alone.

This was when movie going really was movie going and not just attending an event cos you have been brainwashed or marketed to death by it.

I have seen Dirty Dancing but it's storyline just doesn't resonate and none of the songs do,I know it's a cultural item but for me I could never watch it again.

Big Girls Don't Cry was in my head (and on the screen) for the opening scene on the NYS Thruway. And I think I've seen every one of those 1987 movies multiple times. What a wonderful top 20!

It took me 30 seconds to realize what film it is in the first show as I've seen it too many times. I don't think I'd want to see it again.

My College Years!

"Dirty Dancing" was the cover story to take my underage sister and her best friend to one of my friend's house. I spent the entire party parannoying that one of my idiot friends would do something. Nothing happened. And we got away with it.

Ah, youth.

As a mixed group, we went to see "Fatal Attraction" one Friday night, and instead of going on to a party, the group went back to the dorm to discuss the movie and it's sexual politics. As a then closeted guy, I didn't have much to add.

"The Untouchables" might have been the start of my Lust for Kevin Costner. Still can't get into "Yellowstone" though.

Won free tickets to see "La Bamba" from the radio station. It was a two-fer. I also won tickets to see The Outfield in concert.

The only one I don't think I've seen is "Dragnet". The rest are good memories.

Fun times.

I’ve actually only ever seen bits and pieces of this movie, yet I knew what it was almost immediately. That’s how much it’s a part of the culture lol

I love Dirty Dancing, a guilty pleasure that is magical.

I graduated from HS in 1986 and I worked in an independent video store at the time; I LOVED that job. When DD came out on VHS, we couldn't keep the movie in stock, even though we had like 30 copies. I remember seeing Fatal Attraction in the movie theater and loving it. I watch it every so often and it still delivers. Glenn was robbed (again) for the Oscar that year.
