2023 Team Experience Awards - NOMINEES

From the team...

Poor Things earned 12 nominations from the team, including Picture, Director, Actress and two Supporting Actor citations.

Poor Things led the nominations for the Team Experience Awards for the 2023 awards season. Yorgos Lanthimos' film earned 12 nominations, the most of any film this year. Despite the team falling for a movie loved by the Oscars, they were not afraid to deviate from the expected nominees. Only six out of ten Best Picture nominees overlapped with Oscars, while Lanthimos is the only director honored by the Film Experience team and the Oscars with a nomination. The selections for these nominees were determined through a collective voting process involving all the writers at The Film Experience, with the exception of Nathaniel, who will announce his personal Film Bitch Awards separately. Oppenheimer may be the Oscar frontrunner, but it only managed four nominations from the Film Experience team.
FUN FACTS & FIGURES

• The Best Picture category featured 41 movies mentioned on at least one writer’s top 10 list.
• Barbie earned the second highest number of nominations (9), but coincidentally did not make it into Best Picture. Still, Greta Gerwig made it into Best Director and Margot Robbie earned a Best Actress nomination, unlike at the Oscars.
• On the other hand, Alcarrás made it into Best Picture with no other nominations in any other categories.
• The team cited 39 films across 20 categories, which is just one more than the Oscars did this year (38).
• The biggest disagreement between the Oscars and the Film Experience Team was in regards to Oppenheimer. Christopher Nolan’s film led the Oscars with 13 nominations, while it only received 4 nominations from Team Experience.
• Between Best Animated Feature and Best Documentary Feature, only one film earned additional nominations outside of that category. That film was Spider-Man: Across the Spider-Verse, which was also nominated for Best Visual Effects.

But... I can't believe The Film Experience of all places is participating in the Julianne Moore snubbery!! Her best performance in years (decades?) and for my money, one of the best, most layered, considered, and surprising performances of the year -- full stop.

Agreed that it's one of her all-time greatest performances and it's heads and shoulders above anybody who was in the Supporting Actress conversation all season. Also, ALCARRÀS won the Gold Bear at Berlinale 2022 and was chosen to represent Spain at last season's Oscars. It's not especially obscure.

It's very strange that you include Alcarrás for best picture (which compited in 2022 and was out of the shorlists for best international picture) and then it does not appear for non englih speaking movie. It is a boring psedo-documentary that we dont know how it won the golden bear in Berlin.

It was a mistake for Spain to send this movie for the Oscars instead the great Goya-Winner As Bestas /The Beasts, released in the US cinemas in 2023. I wonder if someone has watched this great movie.

The funny thing about Oppenheimer is that it's not even going to get a Split Decision post because there wasn't strong enough disagreement about it among the team. Don't know whether that means folks liked it but not enough, or disliked it but not enough. FWIW, it was on my own best picture ballot.

As usual, I applaud my fellow TFErs' independent thinking, even where it departed from my own. And hey, my Actress ballot was a 5-for-5 match! I feel like an honorary Actressexual. :)
