Cannes Winners 77th Edition, 2024: Palm Dog and all!
by Nathaniel R
It's that time of year again. Cannes has wrapped and we can survey and begin to seek out all sorts of international films that have newfound cache. Some will rise as international hits and awards contenders, others will vanish except perhaps in the memories of those lucky enough to have seen their prize-winning festival bows. After the jump all the prizes and a few tidbits about the movies that took the Queer Palm, Palm Dog, and Camera D'Or...
COMPETITION
Director/Writer/Actress Greta Gerwig (US) led the jury. Her jury included screenwriter Ebru Ceylan (Turkey), directors Juan Antonio Bayona (Spain), Kore-eda Hikorazu (Japan), Nadine Labaki (Lebanon), and famous actors Lily Gladstone (US), Eva Green (France), Omar Sy (France), and Pierfrancesco Favino (Italy)
Palme d’Or: “Anora,” Sean Baker
Grand Prix: "All We Imagine As Light," Payal Kapadia

Actor: Jesse Plemons, “Kinds of Kindness”
Now Plemons and wife Kirsten Dunst both have Cannes acting prizes! How many couples can say that?
Actress: Karla Sofía Gascón, Zoe Saldaña, Selena Gomez, and Adriana Paz, "Emilia Pérez"
This is not, of course, the first time that a Cannes jury has decided to award a collective Best Actress prize. The most famous example may be the prize that went to the cast of Pedro Almódova's brilliant Volver (2006). We expect that Emilia Perez will continue being a hot topic of discussion this year. Can't wait to see it. Have you read Elisa's review?

Both the photo and description for Dog On Trial kind of make it seem like an Anatomy of a Fall where Snoop plays Sandra Huller's role. Hope it's as good as that sounds.
I'm thrilled for Sean Baker - this site turned me onto his work around tthe time of Starlet/Tangerine, and he's definitely one of the most exciting filmmakers working today.
I'm VERY excited to see Sean Baker's latest and really happy he won. His last few films have been EXCELLENT so it looks like the streak continues!
Also great to see Jesse Plemons get a Big Award. He has been insanely consistently good for so long and I think people take his presence and skills for granted.
I'm also so joyful for Sean Baker. A victory for the most indipendent, passionate and risky American cinema.
I thought that with Gerwig and Gladstone in the jury they could take a little Oscar revenge and that Lanthimos movie would have gone home empty handed. Happy to see that I was wrong.
I was rooting so much for Chiara Mastroianni that is heartbreaking in Marcello Mio, but I'm sure that Audiard cooked something tasty.
I like this year's choices of winners a lot as I'm glad Greta Gerwig was chosen to be the president and with a really diverse jury. I was put off by a lot of the reports of standing ovations as that felt odd considering that Cannes is known more for their dramatic and polarizing reactions which makes them fun to read about.
Thank you guys for the coverage.
"Now Plemons and wife Kirsten Dunst both have Cannes acting prizes! How many couples can say that? "
A friend and I discssed this yesterday, and we came up with another 4 at least:
- Katharine Hepburn and Spencer Tracy
- Paul Newman and Joanne Woodward
- Javier Bardem and Penelope Cruz, and
- Rooney Mara and Joaquin Phoenix
Cannes Best Actress winner Selena Gomez? It goes without saying that I haven’t seen the film but talk about coattails, this shouldn’t be a prize for getting cast in the right movie and doing a fine job.
I'm very excited to see Emilia Perez. If the film gets the right campaign, it's very easy to see Jacques Audiard in the "foreign auteur" slot in the Best Director category this year.
An award for George Lucas and best actress Selena Gomez. A snob would call this Cannes tacky, so I guess I am.
Kidding aside, I don't get how Selena Gomez keeps failing upwards. She's truly the worst thing about Only Murders in the Building and completely brings the show down. And I just don't get her in general. She's only slightly more interesting than Taylor Swift to me.
I knew a jury led by Gerwig and including Gladstone and Kore-eda would make good choices, and here we are. Very excited to see Anora and Emilia Perez (of course) but also All We Imagine As Light, Grand Tour, and Substance, which sound fascinating.
Sean Baker seems like such a genuinely nice person, it's hard not to be happy for him!
Great site, where did you get the information for this post? I have been reading a few articles on your site now and I like your style. Thanks a lot and keep it up. Relieve stress with the game:
