When I first heard the news that there would be a third Downton Abbey film I thought,' that's crazy, you've killed off the most quotable character in the previous film!' As you'll recall the Dowager Countess played by the late great Dame Maggie Smith passed away in the last film Downton Abbey: A New Era (2022). But then I reconsidered my incredulity about another film because the franchise has so many good characters...
The reason for this post is the new poster above. The teaser poster focuses on Lady Mary just as it should. With the Dowager departed, she is the now incontestable MVP. The movie will open on September 12th, 2025. Are you excited to return to the upstairs / downstairs antics of the Crawley family and their servants?
And while we're on the topic of feature films that are essentially new seasons (or wrap-ups) of departed television shows, what do you make of them? I've often wondered why they do that as opposed to just making another season but perhaps I'm missing something.

I foolishly would like another X-Files.
The revival seasons were rocky, as the show always was, but with some really solid eps. And Gillian Anderson is right to refuse to go back after what they did to Scully in that final episode.
It'll never happen, but I hate that my favourite series ends on such a sour note.

(tbh I was never a fan and this made me even get angry with Maggie Smith - I can't believe people were voting for her phoning it in over the once in a lifetime, absolutely inspired work by Christina Hendricks in Mad Men, season after season)
I thought the show went on too long and they ran out of story, but the films have worked well so far. They've felt like charming little reunions with old friends, like a fun Christmas special. The sequel was one of the most pleasant times I had at a movie theatre in 2022.
I can't wait to see this at a 9 am Saturday matinee, where I will be the youngest person by a good 40 years.

I wonder if making another film is just more profitable than a season of TV? Either way, I'm looking forward to this one - the characters are always enjoyable and easy to watch. Total comfort food.
I think a mid-2000s or early 2010s film for Buffy or Angel would have been fun. I thought both of those stories ended on the exact right moment, and their final frames were immensely satisfying - especially Angel's, but I have wondered where the story might have gone.
So many shows in the prestige era have such great endings that it's hard to imagine a continuation (Mad Men, The Good Wife, Damages, etc.). What makes Downton work so well is that the characters are always living and going through life. That's easy to pick up.
Scandal could work, I guess? Maybe a Dominic West King Charles film 10-20 years from now that gets at Brexit, Megan, COVID, and his ascension. It would be interesting to know what the power sharing agreement, if any, looked like between him and the queen in her final days.
At the moment, I simply want Netflix to give us that final season of Heartstopper. As fans, we have been in limbo since October. The series is superb. This waiting is irritating.

and a hot scene with barrow and his actor boyfriend to bookend the action he got waaay back in the first episode of the tv series with the closeted duke [and barely any in between]
