Earliest years with all living nominees!

by Nathaniel R

1971 BEST ACTRESS (50 years ago) is the furthest back you can go to get a category (any category) where all the nomines are still alive: Julie Christie, Jane Fonda, Glenda Jackson, Vanessa Redgrave, and Janet Suzman

Loyal readers know we are always irritated that the Academy cares more about imaginary audiences than the one they have so we're thinking of the awesomeness of Hollywood and Oscar history today (since they won't). You've seen our lists of the "oldest living screen stars"  and the "oldest living Oscar nominees" but we're aware Oscar is never going to do anything cool like a "family album" again, a great moment from the broadcast.  BUT THEY SHOULD. If the Academy leaned back into tradition rather than pretend it didn't exist, they could harness more respect and enthusiasm again. Institutions become institutions for a reason. Institutions aren't "cool" by nature since they're like giant time-worn machines that you're parents and grandparents know even better than you but they do command respect if they believe in themselves. The Academy shouldn't be doing 'we're just like you!' Gen Z cosplay but merely flex their own hard-won nearly century old brand.

So here's something a little different: A list of the furthest back you can go in each Oscar category and still have a year where all the nominees still walk among us. Imagine if Oscar invited or celebrated even two or three of them (which is nothing really!) to honor their past. It would be so fun...

Showbiz History: With a Song in My Heart instead of 'in the Rain'. Plus a shocking Oscar moment.

5 random things that happened on this day, February 26th, in showbiz history...

Somehow both the Oscars and the Globes preferred With a Song in My Heart to masterpiece Singin' in the Rain.

1953 The 10th annual Golden Globes are held with The Greatest Show on Earth (Drama) and With a Song in My Heart (Comedy/Musical) winning Best Picture. In today's world, With a Song in My Heart would not be eligible as it was a biopic of a musician, which the HFPA almost always places in Drama now. It's a pity because it's a dull movie and it was up against... wait for it... Singin' in the Rain...

Showbiz History: Taxi Driver, Grammy Openers, and Globe Switcheroos

5 random things that happened on this day, February 8th, in showbiz history...

Julie Andrews in her infamous 'kill them with kindness' Globes speech in which she thanked the producer of... wait for it... My Fair Lady.

1921 One hundred years ago movie star Lana Turner was born. More on her later.

1965 The 22nd annual Golden Globe awards honoring the films of 1964 were held. Becket (drama) and My Fair Lady (comedy/musical) took the Best Picture prizes. And at the peak of the popularity of gigantic big screen musicals, it was the "comedy/musical" winners for acting that repeated on Oscar night with Rex Harrison (My Fair Lady) and Julie Andrews (Mary Poppins) both winning here first...

Why the chanting for "Parasite" was my favourite Oscar moment

by Ginny O'Keefe

I was rooting hard for Parasite all throughout Oscar night. When Jane Fonda proudly said Parasite I let out a  “F**K YEAH!” that woke up my cat. The cast and crew all make it to the stage to give their speeches. I didn’t expect Bong Joon Ho to give another speech because he already seemed so adorably overwhelmed from giving three others. Producer Kwak Sin Ae spoke instead. She had her translator (who has become a staple of this awards season) speak to the audience.

We never imagined this would happen, we are so happy. I feel like a very opportune moment in history is happening right now. I express my deepest gratitude and respect for all the members of the Academy for making this decision.”

Then it happens. The lights dim down and the audience groaned in protest at the speech being cut short...
