'Everything Everywhere' and all over the Spirit Award Nominations

A24's restless inventive sleeper hit Everything Everywhere All At Once continues to win. It's now the leader at the 38th annuel Independent Spirit Awards with 8 nominations and all four of its principal actors were nominated. In second place is Tár with seven nominations. Aftersun missed a couple categories we thought it might hit but it still did very well with five nominations overall.  Love for the rest of the eligible movies was more measured but Bones and All, The Inspection, The Cathedral, and Women Talking also showed up in a few places. 

Since the Spirit Awards have a budget cap ($30 million now) many key potential Oscar players weren't eligible including most Netflix titles as well as presumed Oscar players like The Fabelmans, Banshees of Inisherin, Empire of Light   and naturally all of the spectacle blockbusters. The Spirit Awards rule also deny international cinema the chance to compete in major categories, relegating them to a single "international" category...

ICYMI - "Aftersun" led the British Independent Film Award Nominations

"Aftersun" has been a hit with 'indie' awards groups like BIFA and Gotham.

The title here is a bit of a goof. You probably didn't miss the BIFA award nominations on Friday but we did. Apologizes for the delay in reporting them. The BIFAs use juries to come up with their nominations and if those juries like something they go ALL in.... 16 nominations for Aftersun (now playing in select theaters) sounds like a gargantuan amount of nominations and at first glance it lools like it was nominated for every category for which it was eligible. But therunner up Blue Jean, scored 13 nominations so, again, they go all in if they like something. What that means is that there isn't much variation from category to category. For instance Best Film, Best Director, and Best Screenplay are all interchangeable. After the jump some notes on the nominations...

"TÁR" and "Aftersun" lead the 2022 Gotham Award Nominations

The Gotham Awards, the East Coast indie prizes that pair nicely with the West Coast's much-later Spirit Awards, have announced their nominations for the 2022 film year so we're officially off! Todd Field & Cate Blanchett's collaboration TÁR and Charlotte Wells' debut film Aftersun (both fairly new in theaters) most impressed the various juries that the Gothams assign to categories each year. They led the way with four nominations each across the 8 film categories. Other films that have reason to celebrate today include but are not limited to Everything Everywhere All At Once and two films that have not yet opened for moviegoers, the gay military drama The Inspection (Nov 18th) and Sarah Polley's return with Women Talking (Dec 2nd).  Finally we've got a double acting nominee this year despite so few categories with Ben Whishaw nominated for both film  (Women Talking) and television work (This is Going to Hurt).

A24’s Paul Mescal Double: 'Aftersun' and 'God’s Creatures'

A24 has had a killer 2022 so far, and they’re not slowing down. The effusive love for Everything Everywhere All at Once has indeed been everywhere: tributes to all the actors (including Middleburg last week), Park Chan-wook adding his name to the list of celebrities declaring their love for the film, reports of Academy screenings going like gangbusters – the weird little blockbuster-that-could has done everything it can to stay front and center in the Oscar race. On top of that, there’s the critical success of several A24 films in their bread-and-butter category of horror/thriller (X, Bodies Bodies Bodies, Pearl) and a couple of gems that are enchanting discoveries for those that seek them out (After Yang, Marcel the Shell with Shoes On). What more could we ask of them? 

As it turns out, we can expect them to showcase the brilliant (not to mention gorgeous) Paul Mescal in two films that highlight his ability to be heartbreaking and ice cold in polar opposite performances...
