What did you see this week... or are you waiting for Thanksgiving like Hollywood?

It was a strange weekend for moviegoers. Hollywood wanted to give Black Panther 2 ample room and it's not quite thanksgiving so only two new wide releases risked opening: The Menu and She Said. The former did okay and the latter struggled. In limited release a slightly similar story but just remove a few 0s as Bones and All and The Inspection both opened on a handful of screens. In both box office skirmishes, moviegoers tended to chose the violent option. Violent thrills are really what sells movie tickets these days, with or without vfx budgets. We wish the general moviegoer had wider taste, but it is what it is...

Baby Clyde's TIFF Diary Finale

TIFF travelsIt’s over. I’m done. Managed 25 films in all. 3 down from 2019 but I did start a day later. The Fabelmans winning The Audience Award was as inevitable as me getting this final round up in 2 days late . Have to say that I did not think this was a vintage year. There were loads of big premiers and highly anticipated movies being shown but I was pretty underwhelmed by much of what I did see. Luckily, things perked up a bit towards the end.

Here’s a run down of my last 2 days which turned out to include some of the best in show.

Friday started with The Inspection the narrative feature debut from documentarian Elegance Bratton. For some reason I’d assumed this was a period piece so the opening 10 minutes of a homeless Jeremy Pope jumping the turnstile on the contemporary New York subway, meeting up with a gang of queer friends and visiting his estranged mother (An unrecognisable Gabrielle Union) took me by surprise. Both were a real thrill and suggested something less generic to come...

The 60th Annual New York Film Festival runs September 30th through October 16th (passes are already on sale) and as per usual the festival will have a couple of premieres but the bulk of titles are cherry-picked from the Big Five: Berlin, Cannes, Venice, Sundance, and Toronto. Because of that practice this is a superb festival to catch up with if you don't have the funds to travel to the other festivals. And on that note, disappointment for those hoping for / expecting Tchaikovsky's Wife, Broker, Close, Women Talking or The Fabelmans (a.k.a. me!). But perhaps there will be last minute additions?
