Dame Maggie Smith Unchallenged by the Abbey

by Murtada Elfadl

Did you ever feel that sometimes Dame Maggie Smith has been phoning it in as the Dowager Countess in Downtown Abbey? Did you think that despite being droll and funny she might have been playing obvious notes that we’ve seen from her before. Well you are not alone. The Dame herself agress as she told ES Magazine...

Grammy Nominations for Movie People !

by Nathaniel R

The Grammy Awards aren’t really a crucial topic for The Film Experience. Except when they are. We do love to share the movie adjacent stuff that doesn’t get much press (‘hey, I didn’t know that actor ____ recorded a spoken word album’ etcetera). So herewith some key movie adjacent bits.

Beyonce’s efforts for The Lion King are up for a few pop prizes but that's no surprise since Queen B is a Grammy favourite. Former movie star and still legendary chanteuse Barbra Streisand, another Grammy favourite, has her presumably umpteenth nomination for Best Traditional Pop Vocal Album for her latest “Walls”... the one with the unexpected unintended Girl-in-the-pit Silence of the Lambs homage cover.

But there are some less expected showings, too.

Oooh, "The Humans" has finished filming!

by Nathaniel R

Did you know they were making a movie of 2016's Best Play winner The Humans? Jayne Houdyshell, a brilliant stage actress (pictured center top above), actually got to reprise her Tony-winning role for the film. Imagine not being replaced by Meryl Streep in a Tony-to-Oscar hopeful transition project! Her Tony winning co-star Reed Birney (also a wonderful actor) was replaced though...

See a Movie in a Broadway House!

by Nathaniel R

Photograph © Caitlin Huston

This news is a day late (we got distracted by the foreign film long list reveal yesterday) but have you heard where Martin Scorsese’s The Irishman will be playing? With many of the big theater chains unwilling to play Netflix movies (on account of them streaming the same movies a week or three later), Netflix has gotten creative in a potentially awesome way. The Irishman will play at the Belasco Theatre on Broadway for one month, priced at $15 a ticket...

Let Them All Link

Salon The Marvelous Mrs Maisel's Emmy campaign disrupts Los Angeles with 1959-era prices
• The Atlantic's "friendship files" talks to three thirtysomething women who all cosplay Scarlett Johansson's Black Widow
Slate comparing the starpower of 2019's Little Women to the starpower (back in the day) of the 1994 cast - Saoirse vs Winona and more. Really fun article but the part on Sarandon and Dern is a major misread of the mid-90s. Sarandon was at the very peak of her fame in 1994, headlining a sleeper blockbuster (The Client) and building yet more momentum to win her inevitable Oscar win the following year. She should have bested Dern (who we loooove, don't get us wrong).

After the jump The Godfather, Faye Dunaway's trouble, Steven Soderbergh's secret movie, Mulan trouble, Kristin Chenoweth's breakout and more...
