YNMS: "Suspiria" Teaser Kills, Making Lots of "Widows"

Chris here, reeling from the trailer feast happening this Monday. As teased in previous days, we get our first look at Luca Guadagnino's grisly Suspiria rehash and Steve McQueen's heist thriller adaptation Widows. Both films have a host of elements to bring our anticipation to a fever pitch (Suspiria: intriguing director/genre pairing, Widows: the powers of McQueen matched with author Gillain Flynn on writing duties) but that doesn't mean they don't also have their question marks. Do both films find the auteurs reaching for mainstream sensibilities? Is there any Oscar play here? And what of the sizeable female ensembles in both?

Both films are heavily speculated to launch at the Venice Film Festival, since both filmmakers have previously debuted films there. If you haven't already gorged on both (or need a second watch, third, fourth, etc). check out the two fantastic trailers after the jump and we'll break down the Yes No Maybe So)...

"Suspiria" First Look is Dakota Looking

by Chris Feil.

We've steadily been getting tidbits of late for Luca Guadagnino's Suspiria remake (or reimagining, as the director would prefer) - stories of the filming sending Dakota Johnson to therapy, Cinema Con attendees losing their lunch over the first body-breaking footage, and a reported sprawling 2.5 hour running time. What once sounded like a potentially dubious project is sounding more and more like something worthy of standing next to Dario Argento's original masterwork...

Review: Fifty Shades Freed

by Chris Feil

Christian Grey and Anastasia Steele’s romantic tale of trust and submission comes to a close with Fifty Shades Freed. Opening on their wedding ceremony, the couple still has quite a bit to reconcile before they truly land the fairy tale ending the genre promises. As Anastasia’s career flourishes, her stalker and former boss reemerges to threaten their relationship and the Grey family as well.

Things remain silly. There’s more sex this time around but its handily the least titillating of the three films by good margin. There are car chases, sudden violent attacks, a kidnapping plot, and of course lots of pseudo-kinky coitus to be seen, because the series is nothing if not delightfully ludicrous. This time however is a more snoozy bit of outlandish.

22 Black Dresses

by Nathaniel R

Since Hollywood's glamazons were a united force on Sunday evening towards a better industry with gender parity and less flagrant abuses of power Hollywood, we're opting not to rank the gowns this year. Hollywood's most beautiful were out in force but for the most part they proved that black need not feel funereal even if it's prioritizing solemn resolve above the more typical red carpet concerns: unique beauty, personal style, and either up to the minute contemporary trends or classic throwback glamour.

Allison Janney, Samira Wiley, Michelle Pfeiffer, Mandy Moore

Here are the 22 gowns The Film Experience cherished most from Hollywood's second-most glamorous annual event...

Fifty Shades Blander

By Spencer Coile

It is a sunny, carefree weekday afternoon. A spur of the moment decision leads me to rent the 2017 "blockbuster," Fifty Shades Darker, which prides itself on being the sequel to the risque and monotonous Fifty Shades of Grey. It's new to DVD, I had read half of the second book several summers ago, the first film was altogether harmless, what did I have to lose?

Two hours, it would appear.
