Review: Nia DaCosta's "Candyman"

When the 1992 horror classic Candyman made its way to theaters, audiences were introduced to a figure who serves as a representation of America’s original sin and a tragic monster akin to those from the classic era. The original Candyman (Tony Todd) pursuing grad student Helen Lyle (Virginia Madsen) has invited comparisons to The Phantom of the Opera, another lovelorn monster.  But the latest direct sequel of the same name by director Nia DaCosta is less of a Universal Monster-esque tragedy.

Though it continues the original storyline, the new Candyman (2021) expands its racial commentary to tackle generational pain, police brutality, and gentrification...

Locarno Diary #5: Italian Horror Stories

I was really curious to see Italian movies selected this year in Locarno, after the change of the artistic director. Italy and this part of Switzerland have strong ties: everyone here speaks Italian. You can drive from Milan to Locarno in a couple of hours, so it is not that surprising that the Swiss Festival has strong connections with Italian movie industry. So why are the Italian movies shown in Locarno almost always a disappointment? (The two worst Italian films I saw in the past decade were both showcased here. ) I have my own little conspiracy theories on this topic but that's for another time.

This year there are three prominent Italian movies in Locarno: one in competition, one in Piazza Grande and one in the Cineasti del presente section (which is reserved for young, promising directors). After seeing Il legionario, I was quite optimistic about the fact the something has changed and the "Italian curse" in Locarno has lifted. Perhaps I was too optimistic...

An automatic "yup" for "Nope"

click to see it big if you so desireApologies for two movie poster posts in a row but you know time is; sometimes you have it sometimes you don't. Oscar winning Jordan Peele's third film will be called Nope and star Daniel Kaluuya, Keke Palmer, and Steven Yeun. It arrives in almost exactly a year's time. The supporting cast features Barbie Ferreira (Unpregnant), Brandon Perea (The OA), and Michael Wincott (The Crow).

After his zeitgeist horror hits Get Out and Us, Peele is either sticking with horror for good or he's just working through a trilogy of terror before he tries his very talented hands at some other movie genre. Normally super generic and impossible to search on the internet titles make us shudder, and not in the good horror movie way. But Peele's films have thus far earned their simple titles and somehow made them ultra-memorable moments within the films. So we're hoping the "nope" scene in Nope inspires lots of yaaaaaassss from audiences. 

Questions for the comments

1. On a scale of 1-10 how excited are you for his third effort?

2. Do you think aliens are involved since we're seeing the stars and that cloud obviously ain't no natural cloud?

3. How often do you become absolutely furious remembering that Lupita Nyong'o wasn't even nominated for what should have been an Oscar-winning star turn in Us. Sorry. Maybe that's just... us.

Cannes Diary #08: Huppert, Damon, "Titane", and peculiar babies...

Today a dream of mine came true: I was finally able to attend an event with Isabelle Huppert. She is quite popular on the film festival circuit but lately she is working in theatre a lot (right now some Chekhov, just like the protagonist of Drive My Car), so I was so excited to finally meet her at the "Rendez-vous avec Isabelle Huppert" event. Let me fangirl a little. She is truly a charismatic person with a serious attitude and kind smile. Her event had two moderators but they were quite nervous (I totally understand!) so the conversation was a bit repetitive if still interesting. The most iconic moment was when someone asked her if she ever experienced stage fright or if she was ever a little scared by the legendary directors she worked with. She immediately answered that she never feels intimidated by anyone. It is an attitude she is not interested in exploring; I wish my brain would listen and be more like that! On Haneke, she said that he obsesses over realistic movements, and gives actors a lot of boundaries but almost never any advice  on how to act...and she likes it that way,

In these kind of events moderators are crucial to create an interesting dialogue. I am not that much into Matt Damon's filmography but I found his Rendez-vous a memorable experience, too, because the interviewer prepared the list of questions well so that the whole event was engaging. Of course Damon's friendly attitude helped. He is a charming person and knows how to make an audience happy revealing small inside details from his long carrier.

Cannes at Home: Day 8

What an exciting day to be at Cannes this must have been. Asghar Farhadi unveiled a new picture to critical acclaim, with some even stating that A Hero is his greatest work since A Separation. In the main competition, Julia Ducournau also presented her sophomore feature, Titane. After Raw, the new film seems like it will continue the director's exploration on the limits of body horror. As for some sidebar prospects, Miguel Gomes opened his latest work in the Director's Fortnight. The Tsugua Diaries was co-directed with Maureen Fazendeiro and represents Gomes' first feature since Arabian Nights. Unfortunately, another project called Savagery remains incomplete since the pandemic forced the production to halt. In any case, for our homebound Cannes alternative, let's explore the past and best works from these filmmakers…
