Streaming Review: Sandra Bullock in "Unforgivable"

Please welcome new contributor Catherine Springer

Sandra Bullock has something to prove. No matter how beloved she may be as a performer, she’s never really been taken seriously as a dramatic actress. Her Best Actress Oscar win for The Blind Side (2009) is widely considered to be one of the weakest, as many feel she won more as a nod to her popularity and successful career than for the performance itself. Bullock has always had a healthy perspective on herself and her career, and has taken all the criticism in stride. And yet, there must be a place deep inside that wants to prove to the world that she deserves her Oscar, and that she is so much more than the funny, affable girl next door.

Bullock’s starring role in Alfonso Cuaron’s Gravity (2013) went some of the way to proving she is more than the feel-good funny girl. But the question still remained: can Sandra Bullock deliver in a dramatic role, with no CGI or alien buffers? She's never truly played an unlikeable character, either. Can she change her brand this late in her career, and prove she can deliver in a serious and not loveable role?

The new Netflix film, The Unforgivable, proves the answer is an unequivocal yes. Unfortunately, few may hear that answer because anything she’s doing in this film that’s right is offset by everything else that is so, so wrong...

We're rejoicing over Broadway's Return

by Nathaniel R

Patti Lupone in "Company"

When Broadway was shut down on March 12th, 2020 the official story was "until April 12th, 2020". That one month time frame is hilariously optimistic in retrospect (and even raised some eyebrows at the time). Cut to mid May 2021 and Broadway is still closed but with notice that theaters can reopen at full capacity in September.

But what gives with the Tony Awards? They announced a strange set of nominees after the Broadway closing culled from a very limited pool of shows since a lot hadn't yet opened (Broadway is typically busiest in the spring). Seven months later they still haven't uttered a peep about when those awards will take place. Aaron Tveit, the only nominee for Best Actor in a Musical, still doesn't know whether or not he won. All three of the current nominees in the marquee Tony category of Best Musical (i.e. the one that gets all the headlines and makes the box office difference) will be reopened by late October...

93rd Academy Awards: 10 Best-dressed

by Cláudio Alves

After an awards season full of Zoom ceremonies and no red carpets to speak off, Oscar night was a breath of fresh air. While most stars have spent the past few months attending shows from their homes, that didn't mean there wasn't fashion to appreciate. However, there's something special about the spectacle of the red carpet, something ineffably magical. With that in mind, I decided to explore, list, and rank the best looks of the night. From ingenues to aged thespians, male provocateurs, glamorous goddesses, there was much to appreciate.

First, though, I'd like to make an honorable mention…

93rd Academy Awards: The Women of Best Actress

By Abe Friedtanzer

When I requested to cover this category just one week after Oscar nominations were announced, I didn’t realize quite how competitive it was going to be, putting us in a scenario where anyone could win. Day won the Golden Globe, Mulligan scored with the Critics Choice Association, Davis won the SAG, and McDormand won the BAFTA! Fortunately, this is a truly fantastic slate, and as a result, I’m not going to rank them in any order of quality. Let’s dive into a remarkable list of some of this year’s best female performances…

So ... um ... who is going to win Best Actress?

by Nathaniel R

This is the way all awards seasons should be. Well, not the Zoom breakout rooms... but the uncertainty. There's no godly reason why sweeps should ever exist in awards season given that art is subjective. If you poll any group of people on anything you will see a vast array of opinions. Yet season after season there are sweeps wherein one performer snaps up every award in sight. It is extremely rare that this happens because the performer is miles ahead of their competition (like, say, a Blanchett in Blue Jasmine effect) or because the performance is gorgeous and it's also the very last chance (like say Ledger in The Dark Knight or Boseman this year). It is more commonly an effect of a lack of imagination and groupthink. If we ran the world every acting category almost every year would be like Supporting Actress was for 2007 and Best Actress appears to be for 2020. Each awards show that arrives throws punditry into disarray again and a season can close with joy knowing several actors were honored for great work...
