Live Blog Golden Globes

8:01 SEE PREVIOUS POST FOR WACKY ARRIVALS.
I'd start there as some of the narrative threads continue into this live blog below

8:03 Ricky Gervais has already decimated The Tourist. Ouch. and even brutalized my Cher. "Why don't you want to see Cher?" Because it's not 1975." Ouch 2. And this wasn't part of the joke BUT when he said "The Walking Dead" they cut to Steve Buscemi. Ouch 3

8:04 My "comedy" in the arrivals was much kinder. Well but for the Silence of the Lambs joke.

Bale wins the night's first award

8:04 I don't know if you read Friday's Towleroad article but I devised a Golden Globe Drinking Game which goes like so.

Drink every time...

  • Someone makes a Black Swan joke.
  • Someone makes a Facebook joke.
  • Cher licks her lips.
  • Every time a presenter arrives that has absolutely no business being there other than as shameful attempt at attracting young viewers who won't be watching anyway. (Justin Beiber et. al)
  • When "Miss Golden Globe" is introduced.
  • Another swig if she's totally awkward about it. Having celebrity parents is SO mortifying!
  • You spot a closeted gay. (Kevin Spacey et. al)
  • Every time there's a closeup reaction shot of someone who clearly did not get Ricky Gervais's joke. (Even if they're laughing)
  • You see two celebrities you'd otherwise never see together sharing a table. (The seating arrangements are so bent sometimes.)
  • A winner is announced. Keeping chugging until they make it to the stage!

GOOD LUCK.

A Drinking Opportunity: Captain America with "The Fighter"?

8:14  BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR - CHRISTIAN BALE. The speech is great and I loved that he singled out Mark Wahlberg's work and mentioned that the stoic character never reaps the benefits. Like so.

Mark, really got a give a shout to Mark. You can only give a loud performance like the one I gave when you have a quiet anchor, a stoic character. I've played that one many times and it never gets any notice... thank you buddy. Kudos to you for that. Otherwise we wouldn't have gotten away with it.

8:16 Katey Sagal wins BEST ACTRESS IN DRAMA SERIES for "Sons of Anarchy" but we were ordering pizza so I missed her speech.

8:17 Miss Golden Globe already? "Gia Mantegna". She was not awkward about it at all so you only get one drink not two. Don't be greedy about it. You'll be drunk in no time even if you're VERY strict about the roles.

8:22 Ricky Gervais just introduced Bruce Willis as "Ashton Kutcher's Dad." HEE. But then Bruce made the evening more absurd by saying the word "fabulous". I somehow didn't expect that word out of Bruce's mouth.

8:25 BEST SUPPORTING ACTOR TV - CHRIS COLFER "GLEE"
Oh he's so shook up. And he's way back there, table-wise. Beautiful speech.

I think I dropped my heart between Natalie Portman and Julianne Moore so if anyone sees that please return it to me.

You know every gayboy in the world would love to say that line. It's "fabulous" as... uh... Bruce Willis might say.

8:30 UHHHHHHhhhhhhhhhhhhh

8:31 I don't even know what to say. They bring La Pfeiffer out to present and she is the one who gets the "honor" of introducing Tim Burton's Eyesore in Wonderland.

Let this be a lesson to us all: BE CAREFUL WHAT YOU WISH FOR.

complete post -- you see there's more: Brad & Angie 'they're just like us!', shiny new Globe toys, The Bening's crazy ass hair, Pfeiffer's exhaustion, Portman's cuteness, and more.

8:34 BEST ACTOR IN A TV DRAMA - STEVE BUSCEMI BOARDWALK EMPIRE AND BEST SERIES DRAMA BOARDWALK EMPIRE The Globes do love the new series. SHINY NEW TOYS. I think we can all agree though that Michael C Hall is the winner for Most Two-Toned Hair. Red beard, brunette hair. Curious. "It's saying please wrap up already?" Be careful Buscemi. If they drown out Christian Bale, they won't be kinder to you.

8:42 Awards Season Giveth (Good Films Winning Stuff) and Taketh Away (Pfeiffer introducing Eyesore). And giveth again. Behold the cutest thing you'll see all night.

And as Julia reminds us in the comments. STARS. THEY'RE JUST LIKE US.

8:45 Ricky Gervais makes a funny about Jenny From the Block being "that block between Cartier & Prada"
BEST SONG GOES TO... "YOU HAVEN'T SEEN THE LAST OF ME" Why is there no reaction shot of CHER? Christina Aguilera's face looks curiously "full" tonight. Like Portman full but outside she was talking about not having another kid for awhile. BEST SCORE GOES TO... "Trent Rezor & Atticus Ross The Social Network'  Nine Inch Nails in a tux?! I'm so weirded out but so happy.

8:50 COMMERCIAL and PIZZA arrival. Brilliantly timed. How is your evening going?

8:54 Oh confusion. Pizza did not arrive. False alarm.

8:55 Drinking Opportunity -- they're pandering to people who aren't watching! With Justin Beiber. Just because you have a concert movie coming out does not mean you are part of the movies. The kids have to introduce ANIMATED FILM because ANIMATION IS ONLY FOR CHILDREN. Get it?

8:59 TOY STORY 3 wins. The reaction shots are so great during this particular speech. We see a ton of celebrities. Brad & Angie are cuddling (I'm sorry I L-O-V-E them. I don't care how ubiquitous they are. It's like Liz & Dick only they seem happier than that.) And then Michelle again! She's EXHAUSTED by having had to pretend to like Eyesore in Wonderland.

"when am I going to get my own "The Kids Are All Right""?

9:02 Robert Downey introduces ACTRESS IN A MOTION PICTURE COMEDY. Funny/smarmy intro as is his prerogrative.

9:04 ANNETTE BENING wins. It's a half standing ovation. The big stars are standing but I didn't see the "small folk" standing. Oooh, I'd never heard Mia Wasikowska pronounced that way. Love it. OOH, WENDY from Prince's WENDY & LISA (that's Lisa Cholodenko's wife) Or, excuse me "WENDY AND LISA on their own!" to quote Sandra Bernhard.

Kisses Julianne Moore and thanks her first.

I love The Bening's crazy-ass hair. Lisbeth Salander WISHES her hair was that spiky bad-ass naturally. The Bening should have starred in Tangled. With Helena Bonham-Carter. "And at last we see the light... and it's like a ♪ ♫ "

That was a dry careful speech but it ended beautifully with a silly bit about Warren Beatty winning MOST PROMISING ACTOR GOLDEN GLOBE in 1962. And he was, bitches. Have you seen SPLENDOR IN THE GRASS (1961)? Magic. Magic. Magic.

9:10 Sly Stallone introduces a clip from The Fighter.

9:13 Tilda Swinton "wow I get to say this" when giving the prize to Al Pacino (TV mini) Like that's a rarity. Claire Danes (TV mini) wins her 172nd prize for Temple Grandin.

9:23 Time for a baby bump? (see previous post to get this dumb joke)... I'm not really snorting anything! JOKE.

9:24 Wait, why couldn't MICHELLE PFEIFFER have introduced The Kids Are All Right? Zac Efron gets to do it? The universe hates me! Why couldn't they have made him do Eyesore?

9:27 BEST SCREENPLAY -- facebook jokes are you drinking? -- Aaron Sorkin for THE SOCIAL NETWORK. This That was a seriously confused speech. He ended it with a shout out to strong smart women indicating that he has obviously been stung by the criticism of The Social Network in this  regard.

9:32 The show is lagging and so am I... what should we talk about? NATALIE PORTMAN? Don't listen. IT'S JUST AMBIENT NOISE. She's now part of your oxygen. She's a part of the very molecules you breathe!

9:37 Between Robert Pattison and Olivia Wilde's cheekbones and chins I think I'm bleeding. SUSANNE BIER WINS BEST FOREIGN FILM. I haven't seen "In a Better World" yet but I really love Bier, despite what Nick pointed out as her deep love of macro-closeups, eyeballs and all. I hope Halle Berry is applauding like a crazyperson after what Bier managed to pull out of her in Things We Lost in the Fire.

Was there a reaction shot of Pfeiffer in there? Pfeiffer was supposed to work with Bier herself but it didn't happen. Pfeiffer makes ... odd career decisions.

9:39 Helen Mirren is drrty.

9:41 There are STILL TV awards? Ugh, you're small screen is blocking my view of the big screen, bitches. Laura Linney wins BEST TV COMEDY ACTRESS.

9:48 Matt Bomer is made of plastic.

Pretty pretty plastic.

9:49 BEST COMEDY ACTOR Jim Parsons "The Big Bang Theory"

My writers. My writers... how crass. Oh the truth comes out.

My best girlfriend back home told me I should watch this who but I never have. Am I a bad person?

Now, who's an MTV Girl?

9:51 BEST SUPPORTING ACTRESS MELISSA LEO in The Fighter. Okay I guess maybe the Oscar is hers. I kept thinking it was going to switch over to Amy Adams but maybe not. For a second I was totally worried that they were not going to show Jacki Weaver because they said "and Melissa Leo"

Thank you sweet Amy who might should be standing up here. That performance was amazing. Look at all the ladies they are inviting up here tonight? Hey Jane. Hey Annette. Not too bad.

Helena Bonham-Carter looks confused. Like 'Um, Leo. Jane didn't win anything. She was just a presenter. Pay attention.'

9:57 OOOhhhh the Cecil B Demille award. I'm going to make a "no guts no glory" prediction. ROBERT DENIRO for the win.

10:01 Matt Damon's intro is conceptually funny but not in execution. Except this bit. "Or who can forget Taxi Driver where he was literally unrecognizable as a 13 year old Hooker." Funny.

10:04 It just occurred to me that I didn't even mention JANE F'IN FONDA. Jane Fonda for the win. Oh wait. Nope. My original prediction was correct. It's Robert DeNiro for the Cecil Be Demented Prize. I want Michelle Pfeiffer to win one of these lifetime acheivement prizes so bad but you have to stay in it to win it. Or you have to be a man. Penises help.

10:06 Robert DeNiro plans to be along for a long time. Was that a threat?  I also forget to mention that Angelina Jolie was applying lipgloss earlier. ANGIE FOR THE CECIL B DEMILLE AWA... oh damn. It's still DeNiro.

10:08 The Fockers series has convinced DeNiro he is a comedian. Oops.

10:09 I am in physical pain.

10:10 HELENA BONHAM-CARTER FOR THE CECIL B D--- Fuck! Still  him.

10:14 The Tourist clip. Angelina's lips are so bulbous and luscious. How big is her lip gloss budget? Annette Bening seems SO happy tonight, doesn't she? Thus I am happy for her. Annette Bening for the CEC-- oh, that parts over (whew)

10:16 DAVID FINCHER wins BEST DIRECTOR. I was just thinking about how he was so negative about the praise this movie got and then he says this which explains it all.

I'm personally kind of loathe to respond to the... [i forget what he said something about the praise ] .... for fear of becoming addicted to it. Suffice it to say it's been really nice. Thank you.

10:18 So that heavily scripted banter bit with January Jones and Jimmy Fallon actually worked. That's a rarity. GLEE WINS BEST COMEDY.

10:20 I'm so tired. I just tried to fastforward LIVE TELEVISION. I am dumb. The end.

10:21 not really. about it being the end. I did try to fast forward. tee hee me(e)

"Julianne Hugs Some Starlet" - actual photo caption!

10:23 Have I given anyone alcohol poisioning yet? Some of those tables are seated really far away and you're supposed to drink the entire time they're walking up to the stage. chugchugchug. If that's the drinking game bullet point that defeated you please blame Joe Reid who suggested it.

10:25 Halle Berry just arrived in her Demi Moore designed gown and The Boyfriend says "She's still wearing that dress!?" HA. When would she have changed? The Boyfriend is not totally, shall we say, up on CELEBRITY and he has been my photographer this evening. He sends me photos from his phone that are cracking me up. Emma Stone has been renamed "Emily" and now "some starlet"

10:30 We have half an hour left and I think it's just NATALIE, COLIN and SOCIAL NETWORK left right? Do they each get 10 minute acceptance speeches?

10:30000HMYG0DITSSTILL0N  Natalie Portman wins BEST ACTRESS, DRAMA.
Oh my god. Such a cute speech. She even comments on that scene we've mentioned a million times that "would you fuck her?" scene where Benjamin Millipeid just seems so embarrassed that he has to dance with this chicka who can't get her sexuality on. Natalie is winning me back. Her love for Benjamin Milipeid is contagious. I love the bit about  "Now do this one for yourself" a direction for Darren Aronofsky on an extra take each time. Beautiful. Nailed that speech, Natalie. Now the ambient noise is drowning everything out. NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN NATALIE PORTMAN

10:40 THE KIDS ARE ALL RIGHT wins Best Comedy. Julianne Moore is VERY happy. But then when I interviewed her it was very clear how long she had been with the picture. Yay them!

<-- actual caption ["Hollywood Lesbian Royalty"] Actually I think that'd be Ellen & Jane, right?

10:48 Colin Firth wins Best Actor. He describes Helena Bonham Carter as an "exquisite no-nonsense" -he forgot "eccentric" 'exquisitely eccentric no-nonsense gal'. Speech kind of bounces around off of various parts of the room without really connecting though.

10:51 I think that actors and actresses should be forced to sit through the commercials we're forced to sit through during commercials. This way Johnny Depp could be subjected to Rango while Angie looks away reglossing the lips and Natalie would be subjected to all of the No Strings Attached ads. It's only fair.

10:55 Michael Douglas accepts the award for. No, I can't say it's too..oh wait he saves it with a funny bit

There's got to be an easier way to get a standing ovation.

Good for him. He's very happy to be there and we're glad he is too. Cancer is a bitch. BEST PICTURE to THE SOCIAL NETWORK. [Refresh]

SC -- yeah, SWEET LIPS. hee.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Is it me or has this been the most non-upsetting, all-around pleasant awards season ever? They even finished on time!

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered Commentercaroline

If you're Natalie Portman or Colin Firth and you're gonna give four major awards speeches, I guess you gotta diversity the thanks.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

Marsha -- true. I was actually thinking that maybe she should've saved that extra take story for the Oscar. Because that's a beautiful story.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

nat, why do you hate deniro so much?
seriously?

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmir

If giving good speech helps your Oscar chances, it unfortunately means they have incentive to use the good material up early, and the Oscar speech becomes the least interesting.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMarsha Mason

loved the live blogging, nathaniel.. awsome screencaps too. SO thrilled for "the social network"'s *four!* wins, all richly deserved

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRyan

Loved it. There were a few suprises for me (In Tv anyway).

Some of my Fave moments

Robert Patterson and Helen Mirren at the same table (Must be worth a couple of drinks)

Julia Stiles - Dexter (Cuts to an old woman who is not Julia Stiles by any atratch of the imagination)

Christian Bale noting that if Wahlberg hasn't been so subtle, the whole film may have gone over the top and ridiculous, so true, and glad to see Wahlberg getting some attention for what it by far his best performance.

Mila 'Sweet Lips' Kunis, and "he totally would sleep with me Lol"

Michael Douglas "There must be an easier way to get a standing ovation"

Kaley Cuoco reading out Jim Parsons name...So cute. His speech was great too.

Chris Colfer winning, and Lea Michele crying, i don't really like her, or Glee, but that was sweet.

Jane Lynch's speech. She so damm cool.

Annette and Julianne kissing after bening is annouced,a nd the general love Bening gave her. It becomes clear why the movie worked so well.

Robert De Niro "I'm glad this award was decided before you reviewed little Fockers"
to matt damon "I loved you in The Fighter"

Every Single Person from Glee going up an stage.

Ricky Gervais in general, so sometimes a little flat, he was pretty funny "And Tim Allen" lol

Also, regards to Laura Linney, who won the golden globe, but sadly was not there as her father just died. Very sad, but A deserved win.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBroooooke

Sofia Vergara's tweets "I don't care!!! I already have my Golden Globes!! hahhahha" and "Me robaron la corona otra veeeez!!" translated "someone stole my crown again" :p

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterLuiserghio

Very entertaining show. I'm happy with most of the winners, but Social Network's dominance in such a strong year for film is slightly befuddling to me.

Kind of sad about Julianne Moore and Helena Bonham Carter's losses. While both were expected and understandable, it's a bummer that they are perpetual awards season bridesmaids. Annette Bening and Melissa Leo were great, however, and gave wonderful speeches.

January 16, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterMike M.

Far and away THE absolute highlight of the evening for me, and nothing else comes even remotety close, was when Al Pacino was announced as winner for Best Actor in a miniseries, there was a quick shot of Paul Giamatti with a seriously annoyed look on his face as he had to scootch aside to let someone pass his table. Did anyone esle catch that?

That furrow on his brow was saying, "Really buddy? You couldn't you use the restroom during the commericial break? You had to get me to move aside while Al Pacino is accepting his award? Really?"

It was PHENOMENAL.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRick Tran

I like Cher, but I laughed at the 1975 joke. I didn't really like Gervais until I saw the clips of him hosting the Globes. This dude is hilarious.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterVince in WeHo

That was a hella drunk live blog. Yikes.

Great winners, Globes! Bribes or no bribes, you did yourselves proud! Katey Sagal, Jim Parsons, Colin Firth, Chris Colfer (best speech of the night), "Carlos," "Glee," Jane Lynch, Natalie Portman, Christian Bale, Melissa Leo, Laura Linney, Aaron Sorkin, David Fincher, Annette Bening, "The Social Network," "The Kids Are All Right," Steve Buscemi, "Boardwalk Empire," Al Pacino, Claire Danes! Not a dud in the entire group!

Don't know what the hell Ricky Gervais was thinking subjecting the audience through that. I wonder if he'll even be asked back next year. It seemed like the announcer guy did more work than Ricky did. There's a way to razz the room without discrediting the awards organization that's giving out the awards and the nominees that they've selected. That's in poor form, and a good host would have known better than that.

But still, way to go on those winners, HFPA! I'm pleasantly surprised. Other groups should take notes.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSebastian

I think what Tilda Swinton's "wow I get to say this" was all about, was that she got to say:

"Al Pacino, You Don't Know Jack".

Right?

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSan FranCinema

I hated Portman's speech. She sounded like a dork. I don't care if her actor-choreographer wants to sleep with her.

Poor Gosling and Williams who are both better actors than Portman were stuck at some back table away from everyone.

Happy for Paul Giamatti and Susanne Bier.

I think Firth is getting embarrassed by actually winning this year. I thought his speech was fine but I think he was probably affected by the length of the telecast and all the losses for his film during the evening.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGabriel Oak

I think most of these actors are already getting bored being the losers. I don't know how they'll keep smiling when the Oscars role around. It may be pointless to watch this year.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterGabriel Oak

Great on Gervais for doing the right thing and discrediting a corrupt awards organization in front of stars who are too drunk to care anyway. That's what a good host would do, and that's what he did.

Andrew Garfield and Jesse Eisenberg were both surprisingly attractive. growl

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRax

I thought Portman's speech was not cute in anyway. It was girlish, infantile, annoying, bratty.....and why does she has to advertise her pregnancy everytime she gets an award? The whole universe knows she's pregnant, and so are a zillion other celebrities and a zillion other women around the world and everyone's mother has been pregnant al least once so get over yourself.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Oh give Natalie a break. She's pregnant for the first time and met her future husband on the set on the film that's going to win her an Oscar. Let the girl be happy, damn. I loved her speech, and that "he totally loves to sleep with me" line was the best of the night.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterXL

I get that she's happy but I don't think its necessary for her to make such a fuss about it and ramble about it and go on and on and on and make a show about something that at the end of the day is private.

Rachel Weizs was heavenly pregnant when she got the Oscar and did not make a fuss about it. She hardly mentioned being pregnant if I remember correctly.

I doubt Marion Cotillard, who's also pregnant right now, would behave like this as well.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Love your report. Best thing was Jane Fonda and the Golden Globe for Annette Bening.

Best comment of you, was the Michelle-Pfeiffer-Thing :D

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTan

wow so happy to see so many comments. I wasn't as drunk as it looked BUT it is really hard to type fast and watch and get photos and so on and so on for 4 hours straight. Yeeesh.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterNathaniel R

I know another drinking game - take a shot every time Amanda writes about Natalie Portman.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBM

Lol, Portman's speech was pretty dorky, but in a cute, sweet way. She sounds a little like Nina Sayers before she went all black swan though. Her laugh hahaha, adorable.

I also loved seeing Claire Danes shout out to the real Temple Grandin, who was there, and who hugged her (not that common) when her name was called.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterBroooooke

God I love Michelle!!!!

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterjs

I don't write that much about her. The last times I've written about her- because she is everywhere- were because of Black Swan, and I've written more about the movie itself than about her- a movie I find wildly and massivly overrated.

I must be quite a stupid and unintelligent person, which I never used to think it was the case. I never thought I was some great mind, but I'm at least, highly educated- straight A student in college and top 2 of my class, a masters with honors and a PHD in course,to which I qualified in first position in my year with an academic merit scolarship and once again straight A's and an editing position at my departaments megazine.

But I must be very very very stupid and unable to understand basic principles of human life. Because I think Both Black Swan and The Social Network highly over-rated. TSN is a very good movie, well acted, well written and well directed. but I dont think it portrays my generation, I dont think it portrays "our times" and I dont think its a masterpiece, I dont think its a groundbreaking landmark and I think it is far from the greatest movie ever made.

I think Black Swan is just bad. But I've realized I must be utterly stupid so the problem lies with me.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

宋巧儿 – First Choice: Fann Wong. She has the poise, charisma, elegance and screen presence to pull this off immaculately. With her 古典美 and 熟女气质,i think she will look demure yet sophisticated in those songstress costumes. Plus her years of perfoming experience and singer backrground makes her a perfect candidate for this role. May be a little old for the role but she still looks like someone in her early 30s and i believe this character should be played be an older actress.

Alt: Jeanette Aw - Same as Fann, i think she has the 古典美 to play this character. Her dancing backgroound does not hurt too. Experience in previous blockbusters gives her an added edge and maturity over the other actresses.

于红 – First Choice: Rui En Alt: This seems like the most challenging role out of the three, feels like a 亦正亦邪 kind of role based on the description, definitely the actress who nabs this role must have the acting chops and range to deliver, and i think Rui En is one of the most talented and dedicated actress of her generation by far. She is of the right age and should be able to rise to the occasion and surprise viewers yet again. This actually seems like a 如妃娘娘 type of role that Sheren Tang is an expert at playing and Rui En actually reminds me of a younger Sheren Tang.

刘九妹 First Choice: Zhou Ying.: Has the 外柔内刚 look that i think will suit this character. Being Shanghainese, i think she looks pretty in these kind of costumes and i do feel she has a decent singing voice as well. And she has a leading lady look compared to her main rivals . Acting is natural and 具大将之风
Alt: Peggy Lin (I feel that 刘九妹 should be slghtly younger than the other 2 female leads, she feels like a raw diamond waiting to shine brightly if polished well.

莫理广 – Qi Yu Wu, hands down.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRafa87

Yeah! I got to watch Downton Abbey last night and "read" the Golden Globes here this morning.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterfoo

I just saw on a greek show people talking about J.Lo's appearance at the Globes. WHO CARES????

Really, why doesn't anyone hire someone (Nathaniel etc) who can say something interesting about such events instead of saying "I love what she wears" "I loved her in that movie" "he's so sexy"

The world is depressing in everything it can be :(

(OK i know that no one will pay someone to say his/her real opinion but i just can't stand it)

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJames T

Amanda...what are you talking about? LOL. I don't have any idea what your educational standing has to do with your opinion on movies...

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip

Philip I must be really really stupid because I dont get what everybody else gets....I dont see what everybody else sees as far as BS and TSN are concerned, Therefor I must be really missing somenthing!

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterAmanda

Natalie Portman's speech was just fine. Best speech of the night.

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterXL

Amanda -- I think I understand your feelings on The Social Network and the lockstep unanimity of its praise. I saw it early on and thought it was merely good, not great. In a year of many deserving and wonderful films (including the amazing Black Swan), I think TSN's "importance" is overshadowing whether or not it's actually great as a film. The ubiquity of Facebook as a social phenomenon is also becoming grating (I think I'm the most curmudgeon-y 26 year old I know - "Damn kids 'n their facetwitters! Get off my lawn!"). Also, there are even a couple things I took exception with about the Social Network -- David Fincher's scotch colored filters, for one, are getting tiresome. I don't get why all his films have to look that way and what it lends to them. Also, I found the dialogue uninteresting and kind of bratty. It was entertaining, but mostly driven by "big ideas" and not by character. Zuckerberg and his circle of cohorts were portrayed as brainless automatons driven by single-minded goals and impulses -- the one with the most humanity was Eduardo, who was really well portrayed by Andrew Garfield. Finally, static women characters -- particularly, Eduardo's girlfriend, who acted nonsensical, and Rooney Mara's character, who should be sympathetic, but ends up functioning only as a catalyst for Zuckerberg. I was waiting for the members of the ensemble to come into their own, but not even Zuckerberg becomes fully realized by the end of the film.

Anyway, that's my case for why The Social Network is not my best picture pick. :-)

That being said, maybe you could soften up your rhetoric a little bit? All the "I'm stupid" sarcasm and the credential dropping is making people uncomfortable. :-)

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterTimothy

I wonder if Bobby DeNiro woke up this morning thinking, "Did I really just deliver that comedic monologue that even George Lopez would turn down or was it all just a bad dream?"

January 17, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRick Tran

Timothy,

I agree. So good to find someone who understands me- why do I feel like I'm in a group therapy session right now, but Its a relief to see that I'm not alone.

I think the dialogue in TSN is smart, witty, quick and has good doses of sarcasm, but is also forced, artificial and feels staged through most of the movie. I'm 28 and I dont think the movie explains, captures or defines my generation, or "our times". I dont think it digs deep enough into the phenomenom of social networking or virtual relationships, and stories about greed, envy, social climbing, broken friendships, betrayal, power and money always been told and are part of the West's collective memory since greek mitology. There's nothing new or groudnbreaking about that. Its not typical of the 2000's and its not typical of the generation currently under 30. The whole "real relationships x virtual relationships" dychotomy was not fully explored as well.

And as a woman, I did think the movie was misogynistic. There's not a single woman who's protrayed as being as inteligent as the boys are. None of the women represented are "little geniuses". The Rooney mara character was just a catalyst and the others were all social climbers, coke heads, vapid, shallow, uninteresting or psycopath girlfriends- and what about the lawyer that spends all fo her time on screen completly mute and in the very last scene does the "you 're not an asshole just trying hard to be one" about? Why did she think that? Based on what? Was that just to try to turn the audience sympathetic to the character?

Anyway, I dont understand this unanimous universal praise the movie is getting. But at leats I'm not the only individual on the surface of the planet who feels that way.

Chill Amanda. We get it, you don't like some movies; you are officially the first person I've ever seen on this site so unable to express that in the normal way ("I didn't like those movies") that you felt the need to go on some bizarre spiel about your education. God, it was like De Niro's speech in written form.

Nice live-blogging to go with my dvr-watch of the Globes. I got dorkishly excited to see Idris Elba, and seeing how happy both Portman and Benning were made me a little sad the online discussions over their odds of winning the Oscar have gotten so mean.

A little late, and without reading all 186 previous comments I also want to mention my two fave moments from the show:
1. Kaley Cuoco presenting a Golden Globe to Jim Parsons. When she entered the stage I thought how cool would it be if he won but it won't happen, and then her reaction was so cute, and i could tell he was the winner before she said his name
2. Melisssa Leo's acceptance speech. So natural, it felt just like she was genuinely overwhelmed and happy about what is happening to her. It's probably very rare for an actress to have her breakthrough in her late 40s. I guess I'm not the only one who has never heard of her before her Oscar nod for "Frozen River". She's all like "Three, four years ago no one knew my name, and now I'm like the front runner for an Oscar - wow!"

Dominik -- totally. Melissa Leo's joy and the unusual story is probably helping her traction a lot. ....plus, there's that awesome performance ;)
