Happy New Year !

May yours be...

... as gorgeously lit and directed (but less violent) as Ralph & Angela's!

... as romantic as Harry & Sallys.

...as festive but less scarily eventful than Shelley Winters'!

...and as hilarious as an evening with Martha Plimpton would be if anyone showed up!

HAPPY NEW YEAR
be safe and happy and see you in 2012 right here!

P.S. apologies on the top ten list. year in review starts in full force tomorrow. it's half written!

When Harry Met Sally !
That film just grows in stature with every year that passes.
Adding lustre to the legacy of Meg Ryan, Billy Crystal, Rob and Norah.

Happy new year, Nathaniel!

Joe -- i was watching "Billy on the Street" last night and one of the things he was screaming at people was 'one day we'll all be sorry about how we treated Meg Ryan.' priceless reactions from innocent bystanders.

Jin -- thanks!

Happy New Year to you too! Read this morning: http://www.nytimes.com/2012/01/01/movies/awardsseason/tilda-swinton-discusses-her-career.html

It made my morning!

Quote: She and Mr. Guadagnino have hatched a plan to film a remake of “Auntie Mame,”

Guadagnino is the director of I am Love. I love Mame Dennis! I love Tilda!

No scenes from the floors of the Desert Inn, the Flamingo, the Riviera, Sands, or Sahara? Before the lights went out, anyway. (Unless, of course, you did this bit on a previous New Year's.)

J.P. my memory is not great this morning. which films are you referring to? i pulled these four out of head very last minute before my party.

Happy new year Natt. With your blog this past 2011 was more bearable to me. Thanks for your passionate posts and looking forward the new ones in 2012!

Yet another reason to love this site: counting strange days as part of new years eve scenes. People always seem to forget that one.

I second the opinion that When Harry Met Sally grows over time. I was a teenager when I first saw it. Now in my mid 30s, there are so many new things you recognize and love because of your own relationship snafus.

The Poseidon Adventure was probably the first older movie (that is, not a new release) that I fell in love with-- it happened when I was eight or so-- and oddly, I think watched it on a New Year's Day when I was sick. Shelly Winters is so lovable in it.

Just one movie, Nate: the original Ocean's Eleven, where the multi-casino heist is pulled right after the stroke of midnight on New Year's.

Speaking of fun film facts - an earlier script for Moulin Rouge (which thankfully was not the one they made) had Satine dying very specifically at the stroke of midnight on New Year's 1900; that was the one element of that early script I loved.

Speaking of love - I haven't watched Harry Met Sally in years, so maybe it's safe to revisit. I watched it over and over and over back in the day and somehow never grew tired of it. It's still one of those "films I think of when I think of films". (Carrie Fisher was never better, says I.)

And more love - Martha Plimpton. That is all.

It would be amiss of me not to mention The Fabulous Baker Boys.
Spending New Year's Eve with Jack and Susie is always a pleasure.
