How I Feel / How I Wish I Felt

As demonstrated vibrantly by Mr. James Franco.

I'm not going to have to saw off my arm but I feel like I'm going to have to make some major sacrifice (gulp) because things just aren't going well. Long story short: I'm off my game. I never fall while rock climbing and cave exploring!   I want to be happy smily mischievous Franco instead.

HOW ARE YOU?

i.e. open thread. what's on your mind? Are you trapped and panicky or happy and confident?

Well...my boyfriend was kind of a HUGE douche about something so I'm in a bit of a rut right now. I'm thinking about watching Blue Valentine and neglecting my homework.

Blue Valentine has come to Columbus, so I'm going to try to see it tomorrow. I can't imagine the demographic of the audience... perhaps lovey-dovey college couples who haven't researched the story?

Feel better!

Hate those kind of days when you feel trapped under a rock, I get you :(
Hope you start feeling better

Whenever I see Ellen Burstyn in Requiem for a Dream I feel so nosalgic. It reminds me how I was some years ago when I had a similiar disease. So I used to be very trapped.

Hope you feel better now :)

February 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterRob

Definitely trapped by a rock...

And while I know yours has nothing to actually do with mine, I am very sorry Nathaniel... I feel like I have been unfairly and unaware-aly passing this negative karma to everyone in my life...even my favorite blogger...

But keep fighting the good fight... you and your site are always uplifters for me so I hope maybe you knowing will help you get away from your pesky boulders, and inadvertently get me away too...

I've been happily panicking.

If it's any help: remember that the answer to James Franco/Aron Ralston's problem was: "I need help." Sometimes you just gotta ask for it.

February 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSan FranCinema

That feeling you get when you were panicky a short while ago, but you're still a bit unnerved. That's due to the camera we were using on our student film being stolen/gone missing (though we are leaning towards stolen. Our DP loved his camera). We have been offered back up camera's but it was a stressful day when we realised it had gone.
Also finally saw Black Swan and had some rad Pizza fun times with friends, so its all turning around. Hope it does for you too.

I've catched a cold and I'm at work feeling feverish... :/

I'm debating with myself if I should let myself go and respond to two different guys hitting on me, and in that case to which one: the younger and hotter or the one my age, but married/separated with kids? Why can't life be just like Vicky Cristina Barcelona?

February 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteriggy

Philip & Bryan - how people respond to Blue Valentine totally interests me. especially if they're in a relationship or having issues

iggy depends on what you're looking for.

ruth what's that saint of lost items? pray to that one.

alex feel better.

sanfran i plan to actually/have been.

rob oh relating to Requiem must be frightening. but i think those issues are in everyone to a degree. i mean, that's why the movie is so moving. i think people too often focus on DRUGS when they see that. but people have reasons for taking them. Drugs aren't always the issue... they just become the issue.

lucky and middle p thanks much

chris "happily panicking". To quote Franco/Raltson "LOVE IT."

The combination of the horrid northeast weather and the stress of teaching high school students how to sing jazz music while performing in a musical is leaving me bonkers. My baseline of stress is around where it would normally be a week out from production, but I'm over a month out still. I can't even relax to a good film like I normally do because as soon as the credits pop up, I panic about the wasted prep time.

So, not so hot.

I’m rooting 100% behind Melissa Leo. I love Helena Bonham, but she doesn’t want the bloodly thing (at least not for TKS) maybe the nomination will give her better opprotunities she hasn’t had since her first nomination.
I want Christian Bale to lose so bad – I want him to have the same look Russell Crowe had when he lost to Denzel Washington. But I don’t want the victor to be Geoffrey Rush – I think now is the time to acknowledge Renner while he’s still hot and fresh in voters’ minds.
To any Academy voters who would like to add more joy to Natalie Portman’s life – if you give it to Annette she’s out of your hairs – look what waiting did to Julia Roberts – she won for her best nominated performance.

I swear James Franco uses that smile of his like a weapon. He whips it out CONSTANTLY to charm (smarm?) his way out of any situation.

This week my car windshield was smashed by snow, our heater is on its last legs, and the cable is out so I can't even watch TV while I wait for the 8 millioneth, often super-creepy, repairmen to come and fix everything. I'm also due to give birth any day, so I'm with you on the stress and feeling trapped. However, I have The Scarlet Empress on DVD, so I'm going to watch that and pretend I have much more glamorous troubles, like trying to mastermind a coup d'etat while wearing cool outfits.

Hope you feel better. It's awful when you feel off your game and have no good choices.

February 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterChristine

I was looking for nothing, actually. But it's exactly like they say, when you're not looking....

It's like this game JA (MNPP) plays: do, dump or marry. I already dumped (mentally, that is) the third choice, before it became a real choice: a gym freak, younger, hotter guy, with a girlfriend and a closeted life. Way too complicated. He keeps staring at my lips just a few inches away when he talks to me, though. It's sooo disturbing, it's like if he was about to kiss me at any moment. Forgot to mention, the 3 options come from the work place.

It'd usually be a no brainer, right? I'd pick up the one my age (late thirties), because I'never dug the whole younger guy who feels attracted by the older & wiser (poor guy, if he only knew), but the guy my age... two kids!!! Wow! If the first one was complicated, this one is just madness. The good thing is that if at some point I decided to date them simultaneously, they share the same name :) My brain tells me to do the younger, and "marry" the one with the kids (who's also a hot daddy, btw, poor guy, I only refer to him as the one with the kids). But...

Anyway, this must be the most shallow comment I've ever posted here or elsewhere, but it feels so nice to have only this kind of "conflict".

February 4, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteriggy

And besides that "I love my life" moment of the comment above (I only connected the dots when reading about Roberts projects in the other thread), strictly cinematically speaking, I'm most hyped by Black Swan. I haven't seen it yet and I'm already haunted by that image of Portman with red eyes. I just hope it doesn't get me a strong physical reaction as Requiem for a Dream did back in the day.

I feel rather bad:
- I have problems with my teeth. I was relating when you posted about root canal some days or weeks ago Nathaniel, but them somehow I just didn't post. I'm having root canal treatment since before Christmas, everything seemed to go fine. I didn't feel any pain since the last time. Today the doctor gave me less medication than the last time and said if I don't feel any pain until the next appointment in two weeks, we can finish it and we're done. One hour after today's appointment, the pain from before I started the treatment started again.
- I almost got in a car accident when I drove to work this morning. I wasn't sure if my brakes would do it in this nasty winter weather, but they just so did it. This thing feels kind of good once it's over. I had plans for tomorrow, but with this weather keeping on and this shock from today, I might rather feel like staying at home... boooring..
- I've been hating my job more and more for approx. eighteen months now. And I've been hating the company I work in. Today per chance I suddenly realized that another job within my company could actually be a fun challenge to me. Should I pursue it? But I won't get it... they need me in this job I'm currently doing I hate more and more...

@iggy: saw Black Swan last Friday, I was totally unsure how I would like it. Well, I knew nothing would ever really get me interested in ballet, so some scenes of the film kinda bored me... but all in all it turned out to be just that kind of really sick shit that's somehow really good nevertheless that I like! To me Hershey and Kunis are both almost > Portman, but I'd be totally okay with her winning in 23 days. Oh, and no, the film hasn't changed my opinion about ballet to the better! I mean, seriously, why are these girls doing this to themselves?

February 4, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterDominik

"kind of really sick shit that's somehow really good"

Ha ha Dominik, I hope it lives up to that definition. And cheer up, man. Things will get better, they always do.

I'm sorry to hear you feel off your game, but maybe it's the game itself that's a bit off. This 10 Oscar nominees doesn't seem to work well. There's LESS discussion than when there was 5, a focus on only 2 films and each with a snarky camp. There's nothing to say and ages to go before the Oscars. That would raise ennui in anyone trying to be amusing about it all.

And I think every little technical shift (such as changing a website) is followed by a period of lassitude. So much of our train of thought is geared into accompanying motions and images, and when we change them, our thought pattern is interrupted. I once had a poster over my desk when I was working on this writing project. I changed the poster and I couldn't remember what I wanted to say. My memory was stored in the visual images of the first poster. I had to put the old poster up again to finish my project.

Blue Valentine totally resonated with me...it was heartbreaking. I've been in love once before, and watching that love die is the worst thing in the whole entire world. It also feels so real to me because I haven't really seen any successful marriage around me my entire life. But in a way, I think that the horrible parts are also a piece of the puzzle that is love...ya know? As cliche as that sounds, it's true. You gotta go through that stuff too and somehow it'll work out in the end. I think that's how Blue Valentine ended. As sad as it was, there was no definitive answer/conclusion.

GAH. :'(
