Genie Awards: It's "Incendies" and the Red Carpet

Canada's Genie Awards were held this week and Incendies, which you'll remember was up for the Foreign Film Oscar, was the big winner. The "runner up" as it were, the movie that did very well for itself that didn't win the big one, was Barney's Version which was just Rosamund Pike short of sweeping all the acting trophies. Curiously, if you trust photos from the big event the Barney's Version team was curiously absent. That's so uncool when you win that many awards!

Melissa Etheridge performed (anyone know what song?) and here's a photo of presenters Mia Kirshner (more on her in a bit) and Rossif Sutherland. Yes, he's another spawn of Donald Sutherland -- I didn't know there was a post Kiefer! -- he was nominated for Best Supporting Actor for a film called High Life. Perhaps he can co-star with Armie Hammer at some point since he appears to be the only other 6'5" actor in their age bracket.

Xavier Dolan's Heartbeats went home empty-handed but at least it won nominations for Pic/Director, Cinematography and Supporting Actress.

RED CARPET LINEUP

Mia Kirschner is a dark beauty but I can never ever decide what I think of her acting. I loved the Atom Egoyan film Exotica (the first thing I saw of hers) but I didn't feel fannish until I caught her as a dominatrix in Love and Human Remains. So I thought I was "yes!" on Mia until The "L" Word (hated her on that) so I was blown away by her inchoate despair and haunting of The Black Dahlia (film bitch supporting actress nomination). It seems that my reaction to her is completely dependent on the role/movie which is not something that usually affects me to that degree... i.e. I usually know whether or not I like an actor's work independent of which projects house them. Anyone have any strong feelings one way or the other on Mia?

I can't be the only one who gets freaked out when creepy child stars grew up. Look at Cameron Bright (Birth), now 18, and Jodelle Ferland (Tideland), 16. Yikers. (No, they're not together. I just enjoy my photoshop.) Yes, I know Cameron Bright is in the Twilight movies but I haven't seen them since the first one bored me to tears so to me he's still that creepy boy who tried to seduce Nicole Kidman.

"You're a little liar aren't you?"

I would die to see Sassy Gay Friend take on Birth (2004) but it's too obscure to get that treatment.

Finally there's Best Actress winner Lubna Azabal (who I keep hearing great things about but who is evaded my eyeballs up till now) from Incendies wielding her Genie. The Genie looks like the most dangerous prize this side of Emmy's 'careful or you'll lose an eye' winged she-demon. Oh and Rachel LeFevre she of the booted from Twilight fame.

That's it. Bye!

Pssst. INCENDIES opens in the U.S. on April 22nd.

I've only seen Mia in two things...Not Another Teen Movie and The Black Dahlia. I don't remember much of her acting in NATM but I do remember she was unbelievably gorgeous in it. However, she was ROBBED, ROBBED, ROBBED from a nomination in The Black Dahlia. It truly is a haunting performance in every way, sense, or form.

Jodelle Ferland was also in Twilight: ECLIPSE!

what is it with all these creepy child stars growing up to join Twilight... oh. wait. i get it never mind.

no one feels my sassy gay BIRTH feelings? "think about your choices!!!!"

Yay Genies! Glad that Incendies won! The Jutras (Quebec movie awards) are being handed out tonight, so I assume M. Villeneuve will have some more hardware on his mantle tomorrow morn.
As much as Azabal's performance blew me away, though, I think Tracy Wright was ROBBED of best actress.

And I like Mia - especially her work in Exotica and 24. Also, her sister wrote a really good book called "Where we have to go" - it's funny! Check it out!

Twitter says that Azabal just won Best Actress at the Jutras, too!

I watched the Trotsky in November and I thought it was good. I was really impressed by Jay Baruchel's performance, because I'd never seen him in a leading role before. I haven't seen Incendies yet, but I'll probably check it out when it comes out on DVD.

I saw "Incendies" last night. Great movie. Sophocles would have approved.

March 13, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterSC

If it's good enough for Sophocles... ;)

Some of the Canadian critics I've talked to didn't like the structure of the film (like how the kids were used as narrative devices), but I love the film and it woke me up. It's partly due to Azabal. Actresses in world cinema need more exposure.

Incendie was really great, I would have given Anne Elizabeth Bosse for supporting for Les Amours Imaginaires but im fine with Minnie´s performance, I also liked the Trotsky win for original screenplay I loved the movie. Kirshner has me in Love and Human Remains, Exotica, Dark Summer, I think she is the best thing about Not Another Teen MOvie showing us her comedic sexy side and I think she was awesome in The Black Dahlia I really liked her character but totally loathed her in Party Monster and New Best Friend and The L Word as well so I do have stron opinions about kirchner mostly love though.

Minnie Driver? Yikes. But, then again, that entire movie was problematic, to say the least.

I loved The Trotsky. I saw it at TIFF a while back in 2009 and have been going nuts for it ever since. Glad to see that you liked it too.

I loved Mia in The L word! In fact the first season of the L word is where i fell in love with her (although i quickly realised Jenny Schecter love was the quickest trip to a cold shoulder from a lesbian fan of the L word...or it seems perhaps any L word fan??). I thought she was one of the best actors on the show, and as the series progressed and Jenny was written as more and more of a 'crazy bitch' charicature I celebrated Mia's fantastic comic timing and the way she seemed to embrance the implausible changes in her character from season to season.

I saw an interview with Mia commenting on Jenny from season to season and she stated something like 'It feels like i'm playing a different character each season, so that's fun for me'. I thought that was interesting, I wondered if it was a nice way of commenting on the mess the plotting and writing on the show eventually became?

And yes i loved her in the Black Dahlia, NATM and Exotica too (i'll even cop to loving her in Miss Conception and The Crow: City of Angels). Not a big fan of Love and Human Remains... I do wish we'd get to see her on the big screen more often.... Is it crazy to wish for Mia to be directed by Sarah Polley (or maybe to nab that Selina Kyle role from a certain singing dancing hyper former oscar host;))?

I not-so-secretly love the trashy camp Mia Kirshner brought to "24" (particularly the last few episodes of the 4th season, just before the show truly went down the drain).... this is by no means a rave for her "acting" but rather a rave for the soapy villainess-porn the writers let her runaway with.

March 14, 2011 | Unregistered Commenteris that so wrong?

Mia is on The Vampire Diaries right now -- she's actually pretty great as a morally corrupt, sexually-free vampire.

"I would die to see Sassy Gay Friend take on Birth"

AHHH, that would be hilarious!!

Too bad for Heartbeats and Xavier Dolan. It should have been rewarded once at least.

But the guy is still very young and so talented ;).

I was actually surprised to see that his next movie is on a crowdfunding website (touscoprod.ca) in order to find money to produce it ! But i joined this opportunity to help this talented director, and I really hope that he'll get more recognition with Laurence Anyways. Here is the link : http://www.touscoprod.com/ca/pages/projet/fiche.php?s_id=2

And also an interview he did in french about it (english subs in comments) : http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=HHFziRhHFJs
