Number two, bitch.Talking Points: Transformers is now the top US hit of 2011, outgrossing The Hangover Part 2 and Pirates of the Caribbean Part Another One. Worldwide grosses paint a different surprising picture of the film year with Pirates way out front of everything having grossed a billion dollars and Fast Five the second biggest hit of the year with over half a billion. I did not know this. Everyone loves action movies starring cars I guess. But regardless of how you count beans it's a sequel world out there. It's shocking when anything original breaks through.
Meanwhile Bridesmaids and Midnight in Paris, which had both been hanging on to the top ten despite being two months old (the box office equivalent of senior citizens) finally slipped out. Even though they're losing theaters each week they still have tinier percentile drops than any other pictures indicating that word of mouth continues to draw in the curious... or maybe repeat visitors?

What made you curious enough to see Transformers 3? I love Frances McDormand too, but I'm proud of the fact I haven't see a Bay directorial effort since Bad Boys II.
I finally saw Tree Of Life this weekend. I liked it. Maybe I loved it. I am old enough to remember seeing Jaws at a Drive-In with my family when it first came out, so I tend to think of movies as experiences. I remember the event of watching them. I can't say I fully know how to interpret or talk about everything in Tree Of Life, but I was absorbed by the experience of being in the movie's presence. And yes, this experience did involve about 4 minutes of falling asleep near the beginning. So I won't say it's not slow in some places, but I like some things done slow, and it's rare that a movie can do slow so well. Anyway, I am glad I had the Tree Of Life experience this weekend. Maybe at some point I will want the Transformers 3 experience, but I kind of doubt it.

I did my four-minute snooze on Friday after a long day at work while watching "Midnight in Paris" with the missus. So not all of its weekend box office was due to retreads.

John D -- i'm assuming it's not going to given that they're letting it fade (screen average is down while only adding a few screens lately) It'll be sad though if the widest release it gets is 237 theaters.
My biggest frustration with movies like TREE OF LIFE though is that if you don't see them at some giant festival like TIFF for example (which has some huge screens) you never get the chance to see them on a really big screen. And Tree of Life might be the #1 movie this year that deserves the nation's biggest screens that Transformers and Cars are playing on, you know? I had to see it on a small screen :(
I finally finished watching "Brothers" via Netflix, which I started some time last week, and I must say that Natalie Portman acquitted herself quite nicely. The movie itself, however, seemed...I don't kow...underdeveloped, so much so that the climax was so unsatisfying -- unearned even. None of it seemed to jibe particularly well, which made me really want to see the Danish original.
