Black Swan is sort of like if David Lynch had directed "The Red Shoes."
On The Red Shoes: Lermontov is an amazing character. Really. Although, implicitly, Lermontov's motivation is libido jealousy. Thinking logically about every single line and their reasonable interpretation, there's no way Lermontov is anything but asexual. Jealous in a way the straight guy can't understand? That leaps me to libido jealousy and asexuality. Now, onto the film's situation: It is expert at dealing with sexual-asexual politics with balance. Lermontov does things I wouldn't defend, but there's an implicit reason.

Moira Shearer, sure, but who was the leading man. Was it Anton Walbrook? Man, he was sexy and scary for the late 40s. Whatever happened to him?
This is definitely on my queue - and I am way overdue in watching it, I confess.
Depends how you look at it. The best performance, and the one that you'd nominate for acting prizes, is Walbrook's, but the romantic lead is Marius Goring.
