Never Compromise, The Iron Linky

Feast your eyes on the first poster for The Iron Lady... [via]

I admire the concept of this poster but I think more of her face should have been showing for aesthetic reasons before it began to bled into the Parliament.  As it is it's weirdly torn up.  But perhaps you'll feel differently. You'll tell me, won't you?

Links
Antagony & Ecstasy Nick started a real trend with those 'year so far' awards
My New Plaid Pants "Thursdays Ways Not To Die" takes on Disney's Finding Nemo and you can't argue with that pie chart.
Mr Hipp Strikes! Remember when I said that Drive is one of those movies that will eventually inspire cult devotion. It's already obviously begun.
GQ Natasha VC (whose tumblr i just lurve) on Terminator 2: Judgment Day (one of my favs). Though... apparently she's pissing off some cinephiles with this.

TV Break
Gold Derby Remember how weird it was when Mad Men lost everything but Best Drama at the Emmys on Sunday. Turns out it's not so weird.
The Critical Condition loves the new drama Revenge which features the return of the wonderful Madeleine Stowe. So do I and I only watched it to see Stowe again. Interesting that he brings up Ringer in his review because the whole time I was thinking: how come Sarah Michelle Gellar couldn't get a decent expensive show like this to headline? Ringer is just a mess and she's a much bigger star than Emily VanCamp.

Finally...
You can head on over to Towleroad to read my interview with writer/director Andrew Haigh. His debut (scripted) feature Weekend, is a real wow, beautifully observed, well acted, consistently engaging and expressively shot... all the things that no-budget gay cinema usually lacks. There's more to this interview since our conversation spilled over past our alloted time so I might share a few more nuggets later on if I see cause. I'm hoping the film does well on the coasts and prompts further expansion. It's very good.

Nathaniel and co...why must you all be so anti-establishment (I'm talking about the hesitance in blogging about popular subjects)? We want to hear your thoughts on the new Dragon Tattoo trailer!

I too hope the Weekend does well enough to grace a theatre near me. I like the poster, but it's tonally completely different from the trailer which makes me wonder if those marketing this film are talking to each other.

GREAT GREAT interview, btw

Great Poster... I am still amazed at people who nitpick at movie posters and trailers!??!

For all rooting for Streep's third statuette: has anyone considered once she receives it the Academy will cease to nominated her as frequently?

September 23, 2011 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtfull

It's not the city in general - it's the English Parliament.

September 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterJames T

I would be a happy fan with Streep getting a 3rd Oscar even if she gets fewer nominations.

Agree about SMG. Not sure why she wasn't given something more with all her goodwill in the TV community. But I have to say, I've been disappointed by her acting. What happened to the sassy chick from Buffy and Cruel Intentions? She's pretty bland and vanilla on Ringer.

Madeleine Stowe makes me want to watch it now. What's odd is that as soon as I saw the ad for Revenge, I didn't notice her (if she's even it), but it made me think of the movie of the same name that she starred in with Kevin Costner.
Revenge? Call Madeleine Stowe.

Great observation Mike, I totally forgot Stowe was in that movie of the same name! LOL :-)
PS: Madeline Stowe looks identical NOW as she did in Last of the Mohicans almost 20 years ago!! AMAZING ... LOVE LOVE LOVE her.

If I were an alien who didn''t know anything about Streep or Thatcher, looking at that poster I'd think it's an episode of Doctor Who where an evil Streep/Thatcher invades the British Parliament and controls the government. Exterminate, exterminate!

Regarding her possibilities of winning a third Oscar, I think that if there're things this quiz:

http://www.sporcle.com/games/Jamessir/beat_meryl_streep

to guess which actresses have beaten Streep for an Oscar, her prospects aren't good. Basically, almost everyone has beaten her, including some of the most questioned oscars (Bullock, Foster...). To me it reads "anyone but you is our priority". Her best chances are à la Judi Dench, a flashy role in a BP nominee, preferably after she has semi-retired so that people can miss her.

"For all rooting for Streep's third statuette: has anyone considered once she receives it the Academy will cease to nominated her as frequently?"

Why do you think that?

September 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterArkaan

I agree with /3rtful

If she gets the 3rd, they will start to honor younger actresses ... I think the idea behind this
lacking 3rd Oscar, is to keep her in the game... she does love her honors ( rightfully so ) and she has more than almost any other female... so Oscar campaigning has never been her "thing"... this year Harvey may change this .... I am still happier that Streep is getting the Kennedy Honor... if no Oscar, this honor to me is more prestigious.

That thing growing out of Mrs Thatcher's head is the Houses of Parliament where Members of Parliament from England, Scotland, Northern Ireland and Wales legislate. As yet there is no such thing as the English parliament, although there is a Scottish one.

As someone who hates everything Thatcher (can't bring myself to call her Mrs, let alone Lady) stood for, the very idea of this film, and its tagline 'Never compromise' (God, if only she had) sends shivers down my spine. Though I'm sure Meryl Streep will do an excellent job.

September 23, 2011 | Unregistered CommenterHelena

@Helena
Can you image some people refer to Thatcher as Baroness (BARF)!

I find it rather amazing how under wraps The Iron Lady really is. No one has seen it yet (no festivals), only a few photos, a short 30 second trailer and now this poster. The hype is building, so expectations are quite high now. I hope none of this hurts Streep's chances for Oscar. I'd love to see a new and longer trailer soon. BTW, I like the poster.

September 23, 2011 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

Weird poster, but it oddly works.

And I don't think a third win would stop Meryl from getting frequent Oscar nods. I think it's all on her in the end. Voters have proven that they will nominate her for reading the phone book, so it'll have to be her lack of interest in acting, non-baity roles, roles going to her peers, maybe a shift to theater or television, retirement, etc. for a lack of future Streep nods.

I really like the poster, it's different and I can't wait for the movie, Meryl never EVER dissapoints

oris replica watches Among all designer watches, we have to mention Chopard watches since they are designed in high quality and splendid appearance all the time. Here I can not wait to introduce Mille Miglia wrist watch, a classic Chopard timing watch to all of you, and then we could appreciate its unique charms together.

Mille Miglia wrist is a real classic one without fearing the time trial, and its strong and vigorous life comes from Chopard's outpouring creations. The surprising design matching with outstanding technical characteristics makes this wrist attractive and charming immediately it appears on the market.

The first thing of Mille Miglia wrist GT XL Chrono 2010 watch to catch people's attention is generous and gorgeous watch case in 44mm, made of fine steel or 18k rose gold, and special long numbers on the dial plate cooperates with retro and thick design perfectly. Additionally, rhodanized gray dial plate with organic carving decorative patters remind people of the instrument board on the antique car, and the minute scale ring in black and red echoes marking colors of this legendary racing event.

From the technical angle, Mille Miglia GT XL Chrono 2010 is also perfect. We could appreciate the charming vibration of 28, 800 times per hour of the automatic winding movement throught the transparent watch bottom cap. The movement has been approved by COSC, and the power could be stored for about 46 hours. Furthermore, the wrist watch is also set to have stopped second device, making time set-up accurate to seconds.

Additionally, this timing watch is equipped with natural black rubber watch band with folding buttons in Dunlop racing tire patterns of 1960s, making lovers of racing car crazy.

Indeed, how could people refuse such a classic watch in high quality? Chopard watches are in reality as well in name of designer watches. oris replica watches
