Morning After. Three Globey Flashbacks, One Winners List

1. Miss Golden Globe y'all.

It's Andie Macdowell's daughter Rainey Qualley. She totally did a great job, directing traffic with those arms like she was born to work on a tarmac guiding 747s to their gates. I mean this in the nicest possible way because some Miss Double Gs totally shirk their navigational responsibilities. She was just not having people stand in the wrong spot.

2.  Uggie is Made of Ham

Not only was he pulling focus during the Best Picture speech, he was also working the red carpet, with or without Penelope Ann Miller as Vanna White. I hope he's being compensated well.

3. Laura Dern, a skinny Christmas Tree with THE FACE on top.

HAPPY HOLIDAYS!

Complete Winners List in case you missed it... I know I missed a few of these during the live blog.

Watch out Williams! She will take Bafta and Oscar the same way Cottilard did!

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermarge

Oh, Andie's daughter! You noticed! There's was a moment when I feared she was going to use a whip to get the people out of that stage

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Nat, why are you standing with your shirt on? Why not show everyone the dragon tatto on your back! I agree with Marge, Streep did a fine job, but Williams is going to walk away with oscar.

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterChris Na Taraja

I had planned to watch the show, really, my night's viewing was sorted and I had snacks. I drank a can of coke and organised a mini Sherlock marathon to keep me up til the appointed hour. And Sherlock was great fun, like a giddy cartoon cousin to The Social Network (plus I think if you stretched a jesse eisenberg you would get a benedict cumberbatch), so I was in a good mood and I was looking forward to the show. And then it started.

I lasted 10 minutes before I decided I would prefer to read about it here than watch the thing!

Seriously, nothing cures me of awards fever better than watching an awards ceremony. I really think sleeping through these things is the best way for me to do it- when you wake up there's no Ricky Gervais and a shiny Laura Dern has won a prize.

So thanks Nathaniel for your awards coverage, you have saved me from having to watch awards shows.

Thank you for Laura Dern as christmas tree. Great, unexpected laugh on this lazy morning.

I would be shocked if Streep does not win BAFTA..... she is everywhere...

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Jamie -- i've never doubted that she would win the BAFTA. But the Oscar. I still think it's 50/50

January 16, 2012 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

At least the night got off to a great start, with Laura Dern winning and Julianne Moore looking fantastic (it's clear by now that she will never get older than 30).

The highlight of Madonna's night might not have been the Globe win, but when the camera cut to her when Meryl thanked everybody in England - the HFPA must actually believe she's British.

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJan

Laura Dern is glorious... Even as a Christmas tree.

Where do I order one for next holiday season, Nathaniel?

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJorge Rodrigues

Yeah, meryl has been nominated for BAFTA numerous times but has only one win. Playing Thatcher will help (or hurt)?

As for oscars.... At this point Willams may trump Davis and Streep....
They all stand a good chance especially of Williams takes sag

Spot on, Jan. Spot. On.

Poor Courtney Cox! Now even Joey has a Golden Globe! She was great in Cougartown, but no one seems to notice...*sigh*

But a BIG YAY!!!! for Laura Dern on my favourite by ratings-challenged Enlightened:)

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMarshall1

Ha ha ha Laura Dern as Christimas Tree. Thank you for making me laugh Nathaniel

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commentermanuel

Marshall1:

It really is a travesty that Jennifer Aniston and Matt LeBlanc are the two 'Friends' with Golden Globes. Terrible.

Well, at least Lisa Kudrow won an Emmy.

Poor Matthew Perry and Courteney Cox.

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJorge Rodrigues

Just wondering, did Uggie get to go up on stage with the rest of the Artist cast when 'The Artist' won?

You said "he was pulling focus during the Best Picture speech", so I'm wondering if he actually got to go up on stage. BTW, I didn't watch the awards ceremony so that's why I'm asking.

If so, then that's quite extraordinary. I read article recently when it said that Uggie wasn't allowed to be in the theatre when he shows up at the red carpet premieres. Apparently, the only dogs they allow in are those that are guide dogs for the blind.

Poor Uggie! He's being short shifted. Kinda of how black artists where invited to perform in the clubs and casinos and hotels during the 50s, but weren't allowed to actually stay there.

Oh btw, Uggie is likely made of sausages instead of ham (though no doubt he's a bit of ham for the camera). Actor Jean Du Jardin took Uggie home for a week-end in an attempt to bond with him for work. Apparently, Uggie wouldn't give him the time of day unless Du Jardin offered him sausages!

Did anybody else realize that he mistaked it for the Oscar? I laughed all the whole way through the Descendants bogus.

This might not be the place for my blog .. but here goes.

Just returned from seeing The Iron Lady ... went with no real belief that the movie was going to be good or bad... only that Meryl would be great in the role ...

Meryl was superb in the role and totally immerses herself in the role ... no mimicry in her performance. If she does not get the remainder of the awards, it is a travesty ( and I have seen all but Tilda Swinton's movie.)
Now, the movie itself was a surprise to me ... I thought it very good. The word "messy" has been used by a number of bloggers, but I do not see it that way.

If you approach this movie as a political one, you are wrong... it is a memoir. It did not have to beThatcher up there... it could have been anyone who once had power and then lost it ALL... occupation, family, etc. I did not mind the flashbacks, because if you were watching closely, they were totally triggered by what was happening in the present. See the movie as the protagonist is ANYMAN ... and I think you might enjoy it more... but also thrown in is a magnificent performance by Streep.

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterrick

If Streep takes BAFTA and she already has Globe for Drama, I don't see how she can lose Oscar.

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

@rick

I totally agree with you. I rather enjoyed the film. And Streep is absolutely astounding. She seems so effortless in this remarkable performance.

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered Commenterbrandz

@ John,

Thanks for the link. I'm still surprised (albeit pleasantly so) that they allowed Uggie to participate.

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterBlinking Cursor

Blinking -- yes. Uggie was on stage for the win. He even did his get shot and play dead trick from The Artist on stage.

January 16, 2012 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

I do love the GIF. and how awesome was it to see Laura sitting there with momma Diane Ladd!

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterLola

Awww, I loved Laura Dern's dress. It doesn't deserve being clowned like that.

And Uggie melted my cold, cold heart! They have to have him onstage when "The Artist" picks up its inevitable BP win next month.

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterMirabel

Why is everyone saying the BAFTA is a slam-dunk for Streep? Judging by their insane love for My Week with Marilyn, I'd say Williams has just as good a shot at winning, if not an even better one. I predict the SAG ceremony ends up being a Help love fest with wins for Ensemble, Actress, and Supporting Actress (Spencer), and then Williams gets the BAFTA. In this scenario, who would be considered the frontrunner going into the Oscars? I would presume Davis since the SAG typically lends automatic frontrunner consideration, but there would definitely be some suspense.

I just hope we don't see Streep win both the SAG and BAFTA. That would just make it too damn predictable. (Not to single her out; I'd be just as upset if either Williams or Davis won both awards.)

January 16, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJohn-Paul

Jamie: Streep only won ONCE at BAFTA and that one time was for playing British.

January 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

My gut tells me BAFTA will take this opportunity to give her a 2nd one. The last time she won was for French Lieutenants Woman doing a british accent. Here she is playing Thatcher....has many nominations and they may feel she is overdue for a 2nd win...especialy for playing one of thier pas prime ministers. The performance over there has been getting rave reviews....I feel Help love and MWWM love will be awarded elsewhere....

As for SAG... my gut tells me that it is between Viola and Michelle...would love Streep to take it but she was just honored in 2008...that being said GOLDEN GLOBES had just awarded her in 2009....and now she just won. I dunno. I am sure there are many member of SAG who would like Meryl to get her 3rd Oscar....so a SAG award could be seen to help her chances...

January 17, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Mirabel, i meant it with love. I enjoy myself some Laura Dern.
