Robert Altman @100: "Short Cuts" The Actresses

part 2 of a piece on Short Cuts (1993) to relaunch our Robert Altman tribute. (or start with part 1 if you missed it)

Julianne Moore & Anne Archer in "Short Cuts"

by Eric Blume

Inspired by Juan Carlos’ very fun and smart examination of the actresses in Nashville, I thought it might be fun to do the same for the many actresses in Short Cuts.  Here’s a report of my favorites from least to most…with the caveat that even the “least” are beautifully played by these super talented ladies.

10 Lili Taylor as Honey Bush
Taylor has possibly the least to do of any of the actresses, but it was joyful to see her again and be reminded of that fresh, weird, thrilling energy she brought to cinema in the 1990s.  Hollywood never figured out what to do with her, even though she’s worked continuously.  Here she’s yearning and touching, and she and Robert Downey Jr (before he got so self-conscious) find a quirky comic spark...

Tribeca: Intoxicating Experiences in ‘Good Girl Jane’

By Abe Friedtanzer

Everyone’s experience of high school includes something they wish they hadn’t done. It’s much easier to reflect back on what that might have been as an adult; you have more distant to consider the impact and meaning of a moment or relationship that might not have problematic or regrettable at the time. For some, there’s a great deal of regret from a repeated pattern of behavior that had an undeniable effect on their lives. With time, humor can also be found in deeply disturbing events, and Good Girl Jane does that exceptionally well.

Sarah Elizabeth Mintz describes her directorial debut (she also wrote the screenplay) as loosely based on her own life but with considerable liberties taken and modifications made...

74th Cannes. Red Carpet from Days 1-3

by Nathaniel R

We already covered opening night fashion so let's check in on days 2 and 3. Unfortunately we can't be as comprehensive as we once were in previous years. We used to live on the site Zimbio when they released enormous day-by-day galleries including basically every celebrity, whether they were famous internationally or not and every red carpet shot, whether or not it was a particularly good one including non-glam people like old film directors. They've done away with that section and now you have to look for specific people (so you have to magically know who might have attended each screening). Otherwise you can only see highlights (like every other site) which means you see the same very famous celebrities over and over again. And you lose some of the coolest sightings of rising stars or obscure stars from various countries who are not that famous outside of their home country. Which sucks for internationally minded cinephiles like us...  Ah well. On to the red carpet premiere lewks we did see...

Models + Trivia + Movies!

by Nathaniel R

"The Trinity" - Christy, Naomi, and Linda

Happy half-century birthday today to the one and only Naomi Campbell. For those of you who were born in the 1990s or later you might have missed what a huge supernova deal models were to pop-culture in the late 1980s to late 1990s. Household name models had existed for some time before of course (Twiggy in the 60s / Paulina in the 80s, etcetera) but it was in the 1990s when the term "supermodel" was coined and when the models who could legitimately be called household names began to truly multiply. "Supermodels" infiltrated rock and roll (via a constant presence in music videos) and tranferred to movies and tv by becoming their own brands and trying their hand at acting... or merely playing themselves (often superbly) in fashion-related movies or documentaries.
