Patton Oswalt To Host the Oscars In 2021*

*This is not strictly true.

Remember that moment at the BFCA "Critics Choice" Show when Patton Oswalt took the stage, owned it, said somewhat interesting things (I forget what but it's been a long month), got laughs. Everyone in the twitterverse was all 'why isn't he hosting?'. Apparently that moment was not lost on Hollywood.

ANIMATION NEWS
Oswalt has not one but two upcoming hosting gigs in February. First "Remy" himself (Ratatouille!) will host the animation industry's Annie Awards on February 4th, 2012 about which he says:

The Annies are where the real weirdos hang, and it’s a visual feast just to have a drink with them—I can’t wait”

VISUAL FX NEWS
...and just three days later he'll host the Visual Effects Society Awards. Those people did a good job on his damaged legs in Young Adult, you must admit.

Neither of these awards shows are televised but baby steps. One day he'll be hosting the Oscars! I can see it now. But he has to get more famous first. Oscar is picky about the Q quotient.

P.S. One thing I'd totally forgotten about the VES Awards is that their trophy and logo are totally "Papa Georges" lovin'

Advantage: HUGO after the jump!

It's a straight up Méliès Trip to the Moon statue which must give Martin Scorsese'sHugo quite a leg up for the win in its categories right? It's nominated thrice.

"Best Supporting Visual Effects"
Hugo, Anonymous, Sherlock Holmes 2, Source Code, War Horse

"Best Virtual Cinematography"
Hugo, Rise of the Planet of the Apes, Thor, Transformers 3

"Outstanding Models"
Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 (Hogwart's School Buildings)
Hugo (Train Crash)
Mission: Impossible -Ghost Protocol (Parking Garage)
Transformers Dark of the Moon (Driller)

What a worthy character on all sides, eh?

Rough going for the other movies even when they're deserving since it would seem utterly bizarre to have the Méliès moon trophies handed to Hugo's rivals!

P.P.S. Oscar is not Méliès-shaped so it'll be a fair fight there.

That'd be as awkward as having a Cedric Gibbons biopic nominated for best art-direction. How could anything else win?

Good one! Or an Edith Head bio for costumes. HEY. WHY HAVEN'T THEY DONE ONE? I mean, other than "The Incredibles"

Damn, Nathaniel! That headline was really making me happy for a moment. (is there video to those comments he made?) I've enjoyed Oswalt in stand-up (and he does comedy records too, how old-fashioned!) And I keep forgetting that he was "Remy" - one of my all-time favorite character vocalizations.

This would be very cool (I mean - Billy Crystal?) and I think he could handle hosting duties with aplomb (and not a bomb.) How do we make this happen for next year?

Patton Oswalt's Twitter feed from yesterday is great, along with Albert Brooks. Brooks' led to me Russell Crowe?! Who knew he had a Twitter account.

Nathaniel, did you notice his tweets yesterday to Albert Brooks? Genius!

Patton was robbed of a BSA nomination... Jonah Hill took his place!!

Louis CK needs to host as well.

I have to say, if Patton Oswalt had gotten a nomination and Charlize had not, that would have been wrong, wrong, wrong.

January 25, 2012 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

Agree with Evan. They both truly deserved to be nominated. Oswalt should have gotten either Von Sydow or Hill's spot. Charlize should have gotten Glenn Close's and the screenplay should have gotten any of the original screenplay slots except Midnight in Paris.

Jorge -- i missed them!

lol Tilda found out about his tweets and took it as dare to sing with serkis "is there Life on Mars?" and she thinks it's a fabulous idea and is completely down to do it. made me smile.
