RIP Harris Savides

Truly sad to hear about the passing of one of the great cinematographers, Harris Savides. Given his visual craft and my lack of a free moment at this very moment, a video tribute seems more appropriate than any words I could hastily write so I'm sharing this beautiful visual essay from Press Play.

Press Play VIDEO ESSAY: In Memory of Harris Savides (1957-2012) from Nelson Carvajal on Vimeo.

I knew they'd use the Birth score. How could they not? We've lost a great.

RIP Harris Savides and thank you most especially for your work on Birth, Milk, and Zodiac and your gorgeous record-breaking* work on haunting music videos like these...

*little known factoid: Harris Savides has won more "best cinematography" awards at the MTV Music Video Awards than any other DP. He won three for those two videos and R.E.M.'s "Everybody Hurts"

As a big cinematography buff, this news hit me in a weak spot. Such a legitimately great talent and his work with Fincher and Romanek, especially in the '90s, still stand as some of the most fruitful filmmaking collaborations, short or otherwise. He will definitely be missed.

He's still got one more film in the pipeline, Sofia Coppola's The Bling Ring, so I'm naturally even more curious to see the end product on that one now.

Madonna kind of lost that vision she had in the early years of really being able to recognize future talents. It's a shame...those videos she did were once so great.

I absolutely love the way he captured Los Angeles in 2010 with both Somewhere and Greenberg. Great, great talent.

Very sad news. I think his work with Gus Van Sant was remarkable, specially in "Elephant".

Rain is one of my all-time favorites music videos. I love every shot.

PS Madonna still got it. She's just not pushing so hard.

This was such a horrible shock.

His work on Van Sant's films and Birth are immortal. I also loved his collaborations with Baumbach (Margot at the Wedding and Greenberg). One of the greats.

Even more eager to see The Bling Ring now since it now holds his last work.

Incredibly talented and underrated D.P.; it's a shame to lose him and at a relatively young age. My faves are Elephant, Zodiac, and Birth.

Savides worked in music videos too? Him working with Fincher for Zodiac is more awesome now that I'm aware of this information.

Also, Team Gerry!
