Box Office: Some Movies Made $. Some Didn't. The End.
Whenever a mega-hit comes along reporting on box office gets yet duller. How many times can the internets type "SHATTERING RECORDS!" There aren't enough thesauri in the world to rescue us. I've tried goosing the box office column up with cartoons, illustrations, and extra lists so that The Film Experience retains its air of not phoning this in! So begone repetitive top ten chart. Let it suffice to say that the box office looked something like this over the weekend...
- THE AVENGERS
- Unauthorized Transformers Sequel
- Outrageous Antics of Sacha Baron Cohen III
- Marketing Hooks
- Old Ladies
- Movies
- Movies only New Yorkers and Los Angelenos are allowed to see for some reason
Next week is a holiday weekend. Can The Avengers withstand the onslaught of Will Smith, Tommy Lee Jones and Josh Brolin as Tommy Lee Jones in Men in Black III for a fourth weekend on the top of the mountain of money? Stay tuned!
Did you see a movie this weekend?

I saw Moonrise Kingdom and I loved it, it's poetic and beautifully inventive. From beginning to end, credits included!
So glad to see Battleship underperformed. Generally I don't want to wish any film ill, I want to like everything and I want the industry to thrive. But this piece of shit must be the most egregious offense Hollywood has turned out in a very long time in terms of its budget and the incredibly crass condescension its existence is from Hollywood to America/the world. Hollywood needs to learn a lesson about telling the audience that its stupid and demanding they pay to be told so
The missus and I saw "Battleship". Much better than the critical community would have you believe. It delivers as advertised, with more of a story than you might expect from the genre.
"Movies only New Yorkers and Los Angelenos are allowed to see for some reason"
We're the elite. New Yorkers and Los Angelenos have that privilege over the mass that's the United States.
OT. Boooo to Will Smith for slapping a reporter and still trying to be cool about it, justifying himself. Yes, "funny" reporters are an incredibly annoying plague, but slapping someone's face should be off limits for anyone. I'm surprised by the lack of reaction to it. Had it been Cruise, it would be the main story everywhere.
Damn. The Avengers really is sucking the life out of everything...except Marigold Hotel.
I saw "The Kid With The Bike" and "Undefeated" (2012 Oscar winning documentary). Both were great. Really, really good movies.
I saw Dark Shadows for my birthday. Boy so much missed opportunities. If only it would have taken The Addams Family movies as blueprints.....
Off the see The Raid on Tuesday - looks superb. Who needs superheroes when cops are capable of such fancy balletic action moves.
I saw four-Transformers 3, Puss in Boats, The Passion of Joan of Arc, and Chapter Two. One of the weirdest Netflix driven movie marathons I have sat through in a long time.
Saw THE AVENGERS for a second time. I know, I know. But I can't help it. Next film for my friends and I will probably be PROMETHEUS.
I saw the Avengers for a second time. Then I took my Mom to the Old Ladies film. Mom loved seeing leading ladies with as many wrinkles as her.
Nathaniel -- Do you think Marigold Hotel could end up being this year's Midnight in Paris?
Saw It Happened One Night for the first time. Loved it. That wedding sequence at the end was so tense, and then the bf and I were actually cheering for them at the end. Great fun and a great script.
I was an InsideOut and I saw Bullhead, which finally came out here, after being the holdout compared to the other Best Foreign Picture nominees and contenders that have been coming out here since January. It is twice the movie Drive is.
I watched Little Miss Sunshine with my brother. He'd only seen it once a few years ago. We both thought it was great. It's one of my favorite movies :)
Re: Battleship. On the one hand, everything Casey Fiore said. There should never be a movie with a toy company's name in the trailer credits. Never. Despicable. On the other hand, I love Peter Berg and what he's done on television, especially Friday Night Lights. And I want Taylor Kitsch to be a big star because we're gonna get married someday. So, but, no. Have to come down on the happiness that Battleship is turning into a flop.
I saw the restored Grand Illusion yesterday at Film Forum. I'm still recovering. Absolutely extraordinary.
" The Avengers" lived up the hype- it is the ultimate Marvel super hero movie- "Dark Shadows" was beautiful to look at and good when Depp was on screen but the by the number FX heavy climax felt tired.
