LA Times another day, another prize for Argo. This time it's the USC Scripter prize for screenplay (which goes to the author of the original text and the screenwriter who adapted it). I'm glad there are a few "who will win?" dramas left for Oscar night but, as ever, Best Picture won't be one of them. Argo has become a steamroller.

Yeah, that animated short is really something. Amazing concept and technique, it is a bit longer than I'd have liked it but in a year that didn't have Paperman it'd be a solid winner. Alas...

And is it really a done deal with ARGO? I keep waiting that something happens at Oscar night. I still remember The Social Network being considered a done deal too, or at least David Fincher's win and then... Puff.

It's going to be a sad day when Tony Kushner loses adapted screenplay to "Argo." :-/
Jorge by the time of Oscar night, The Social Network was not a done deal, by that point The King's Speech won DGA, SAG ensemble and the BAFTA for best picture. Argo is arguably even more locked up than The King's Speech was.
rami: That's why I rectified - I was talking about David Fincher's win. Even the BAFTAs gave him the win over Hooper. So that was a BIG snub at the Oscars. At least in my book.
If Argo does not win on oscar night, there is no question that the academy would be sending a loud and clear message: "We don't care what everyone else does! We do what WE want". Argo is no one's favorite movie. Really. No one watches Argo and raves about it. It s very good filmmaking but nothing extraordinary in a year full of extraordinary works. So if the academy chooses to reward Lincoln - the 2nd favorite now that SLP failed to capitalize on its 4 acting nomination - then it would dilute once and for all, all the criticism the academy had to endure when they reward Crash, A Beautiful Mind, The King's Speech, Shakespeare in Love... I'm feeling good about this.
So glad they don't allow write-in votes. At least Director is safe from the Argo surge.
I still really want to see Lincoln take BP and especially Screenplay - Kushner did such a wonderful job, and I want to see him take home an Oscar.
Jorge, thanks for posting the links to the Animated Shorts. They don't release them in cinemas where I live (Sydney, Australia) but I'd managed to catch four online already. So great to have a link to HEAD OVER HEELS, the one I hadn't found.
I'm not a big fan of PAPERMAN; I'd give it to ADAM AND DOG or MAGGIE SIMPSON (yes, really). But this is still a solid selection of nominees and well worth watching all of them.
