can you sing with all the voices of the mountains?

Can you paint with all the colors of the wind? Well, can you?

Nathaniel--Did you just watch that hilarious and clever new video on youtube called Disney Princess After Ever After? Why else would you be thinking of Pocahontas?

"Have you ever held the entrails of an English guy?"

Pam - That's fantastic!

I'd love to see more posts about the Disney classic musicals, I can't remember there ever being any...

Glad that others agree with me: it's hard to talk to bobcats.

March 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterEvan

Evan -- it is. They just growl.

Joe -- i post about Little Mermaid too much but otherwise... not a lot. although we've investigated 101 Dalmations and Snow White in depth. But yes, i think a series is probably in order.

Nathaniel - Awesome! I'll look forward to it!

You're thinking about "Pocahontas" because Judy Kuhn is headlining PASSION off-Broadway.

March 25, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterAndrew K.

andrew -- i must see. i must see. but probably a hot ticket. shall investigate.

Walk the footsteps of a stranger

No. isn't that illegal?

Learn things I never knew I never knew

Every single day.

Hear the wolf cry to the blue corn moon

Yes. Call it wolf, call it my neightbour's semi-abandoned dog.

Ask the grinning bobcat why he grins

I would if I knew what a bobcat is.

Run the hidden pine trails of the forest

Sure... if by pine trails you mean the railtracks of the subway. Yes, I run everyday ro catch the train.

Taste the sunsweet berries of the Earth

Absolutely, love berries.

Sing with all the voices of the mountain

Not really, not even with the (other awful) voices of the building.

Paint with all the colors of the wind

Does painting my apartment in different colors with the windows opened count? Then, no.

This is actually a pretty GREAT song. Kuhn's gorgeous delivery, Menken's stirring music and beautiful lyrics actually make it more significant than most of the cheesier Disney love songs (A Whole New World & Can You Feel the Love Tonight in particular). To think that a Disney movie could produce a song about race and colonialism and make it a top ten Oscar-winning hit? Awesome!

I remember listening to this song again in 2003 when the US invaded Iraq (shudder) and it held so much more meaning for me then. I wanted Kuhn to sing it to Bush, Cheney and all the other warmongerers, especially the line "You can own the earth and still/All you'll own is earth until/You can paint with all the colors of the wins."

Still one of the most breathtakingly beautiful sequences in all of Disney.

March 25, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterdenny

My favourite Disney princess and for some reason, the least favourite of my American (internet) friends. Every time I talk about Pocahontas they all have to jump in about the historical inaccuracies. They all like Mulan

March 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterPaolo

Well, the bobcat doesn't wanna tell y'all why he grins anyway.

March 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commenterjessica

jessica -- so cagey!

Paolo -- i always loved her too. but she got a bad rap from the very beginning which is sad cuz it's a good movie.

Jase - yup

Iggy -- only if you are following in their footsteps i think

I must watch all the Disney classics again. So far I've seen Little Mermaid and Cinderella (I didn't expect her to be THAT dumb) but Pocahontas and Alice are on my watchlist next.

March 26, 2013 | Unregistered Commentersona

My favorite princess is Ariel, however I do love this song.

March 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterMelissa

My favorite Disney queen is Helen Reddy as Nora in Pete's Dragon. After all, it's a "Brazzle Dazzle Day"...

Excuse me, but I prefer to roll in all the riches all around me...

March 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterKurtis O

I checked all the boxes, but that's only because I'm lonely and desperate for attention.

March 26, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterCarmen Sandiego

Carmen -- i checked most of the boxes. No shame! but i couldn't in good conscience claim to be able to sing with all the voices of the mountain, damnit

"You think the only people who are people
Are the people who look and think like you,
But if you walk the footsteps of a stranger,
You'll learn things you never knew you never knew."

That is all.

March 27, 2013 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

You know, basically anything is possible. So i vote 'yes' for all of them. In fact, Im going to teach my friends how to sing w/ all the voices of the mountain and paint w/ all the colors of the wind
