Open Thread. Wanna Help with my Critics Choice Ballot?

Nobody was more badass than Emily Blunt as the Full Metal Bitch ... no matter what you're calling the movie nowYesterday I shared the eligibility list (not-official, but Nathaniel-created) for an underdiscussed Critics Choice category "Young Actor/Actress" but that's not the only category that the BFCA has that isn't discussed enough to insure widespread careful consideration for a strong lineup. Here are some other categories you can help me with.

FYC your favorites in the comments for the following COMEDY & ACTION categories! We're only allowed 3 votes in each so there are some no brainers for yours truly: Rose Byrne for Comedy Actress (Neighbors) i imagine she's a longshot for a Globe nomination which pisses me off to no end; Emily Blunt for action actress (Edge of Tomorrow); Captain America: Winter Soldier for Action movie... and it's just no contest. Other movies: You got nothing on Cappy in that elevator. Sorry bout it!

BEST ACTION MOVIE
BEST ACTOR in an ACTION MOVIE - name AND film
BEST ACTRESS in an ACTION MOVIE - name AND film

BEST COMEDY
BEST ACTOR in a COMEDY - name AND film
BEST ACTRESS in a COMEDY - name AND film

BEST SCI-FI/HORROR MOVIE
For some reason this one doesn't get acting categories to go with it. I'm a member but the Critics Choice Awards sometimes feel poorly thought out in terms of categories. Either commit or don't, you know?

Yknow, now that I'm thinking about it, it was a weird year for comedy. Consider the below with a blanket caveat of "if you decide that this counts as a comedy"

BEST COMEDY - Obvious Child
BEST ACTOR in a COMEDY - Ralph Fiennes, Grand Budapest Hotel
BEST ACTRESS in a COMEDY - Elisabeth Moss, The One I Love

BEST SCI-FI/HORROR MOVIE - The Babadook, naturally. (Or.. unnaturally. But you know what I mean.)

December 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterMargaret

Best sci-fi: "Coherence", "Guardians of the Galaxy".

For comedy, I'd kind of begin and end with "Obvious Child". Or maybe "The Lego Movie", honestly. If they don't distinguish supporting for comedy, I would nominate Jillian Bell for "22 Jump Street".

ACTOR IN AN ACTION MOVIE: Toby Kebbell & Andy Serkis - Dawn of the Planet of the Apes

I really didn't watch enough comedies or horror movies this year, so I'm going with Guardians Of The Galaxy, Tom Cruise (Edge of Tomorrow) and Scarlett Johansson (Lucy)

I don't know where THE GUEST is eligible for... ACTION or SCI-FI/HORROR but it should be nominate wherever. Dan Stevens should also be nomination in the Actor category.

Shailene Woodley, Divergent

Best Comedy:
Begin Again, if you can consider it a comedy

My other suggestions have all been mentioned:
Edge of Tomorrow, Tom Cruise, The Lego Movie, Ralph Fiennes, Jillian Bell, The Babadook.

I can’t think of a Sci-fi movie that doesn’t also fall in to the Action category.

December 8, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterA Mai

SNOWPIERCER - agh. can't believe that didn't occur to me. This is why discusison is crucial.

December 8, 2014 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

BEST ACTION MOVIE: X-Men: Days Of Future Past or Captain America: Winter Soldier (although I reserve the right to change my mind after The Hobbit 3 comes out.)

BEST ACTRESS in an ACTION MOVIE: Emily Blunt - Edge Of Tomorrow (see end of BAF)

I'd put down Rose Byrne for Neighbors but honestly, it's one of the only comedies I've seen this year so far (The Interview will certainly join it, however).

Best Action Movie: Snowpiercer
Best Actor in an Action Movie: Chris Evans, Snowpiercer
Best Actress in an Action Movie: Scarlett Johannsson, Lucy (say what you will about the film itself - and I love how gonzo bonkers balls-to-the-wall ridiculous it is - but she is DAMN good in it)

Best Comedy: Grand Budapest Hotel
Best Actor in a Comedy: Ralph Fiennes, Grand Budapest Hotel
Best Actress in a Comedy: Jenny Slate Obvious Child

Best SciFi/Horror: Stage Fright. Actually, it's kind of awful, but it's also a musical and it's VERY camp and it would be a hoot to see it nominated for any kind of award.

I agree with all of Virginia's choices, and will just add that Ralph Fiennes should be a lock in the best actor category. Grand Budapest Hotel without him is inconceivable.

Ditto Emily Blunt in Edge of Tomorrow, I don't know why she hasn't been in the conversation for best supporting. That's a great role, and a great role model for woman.
Pride was my favourite comedy... sorry I love Rose Byrne but I haven't seen Neighbours.
Horror - Babadook - I haven't loved a horror film so much since Carrie.
