The Faces of Jude

Here's abstew on one of TFE's very favorite actors

This past Wednesday saw the limited release of the British film Dom Hemingway about a safecracker that is recently released from prison after serving 12 years. The marketing material is also quick to point out that he's played by Jude Law because it's not immediately apparent.(The film also stars The Mother of Dragons herself, Emilia Clarke, as his...daughter! Well, at least she's not the love interest. At least, I hope not.)

Sporting a couple gold teeth, the craziest mutton chops not normally seen outside of a Civil War reenactor, and more girth than usual (Law gained 30 pounds for the role and it's not even Oscar bait!), the role is certainly a departure for the man that was once Dickie Greenleaf. (Although he's still kinda sexy as Dom. Am I crazy?)

Even in his early roles it was often noted that Law was a character actor trapped in the body of a movie star. Although he's been named People Magazine's Sexiest Man Alive before, he's hardly an actor to rely solely on his good looks. Throughout his career he's been allowed to embrace the character actor aspect of his roles and experiment with his appearance along the way.

Let's take a look back at some of his most memorable looks!

The twinkalicious boy-toy of Oscar Wilde:

The golden sun god Dickie Greenfiled. Accept no imitations:

An android sex worker. He's your private robot, a robot for money, he'll do what you want him to do:

No pictures please, unless you get my good side...

Grizzled mountain man on his way home to Nicole Kidman:

Teller of Shania Twain tales. Corporate a-hole. How is he not himself?

Mustachioed Bromantic sidekick (and oh, so much more) to Sherlock Holmes:

Fear-mongering journalist with teeth as bad as his personality:

Cuckold husband of Keira Knightley. So disapproving in those glasses:

So smart and dapper, why he looks just like a young Tom Wilkinson:

And just for fun, Jude's recent appearance on Fallon where they had a "Funny Face Off":

How do you like your Jude Law? Which of his looks is your favorite? Let us know in the comments!

I went through this Jude Law obsession back in the early aughts (who didn't?) and it hasn't really gone away. I'll take that face any way it's served, to be honest. He's such a versatile actor. Just ridiculously talented.

But, of course I always love his face most when he's winking in my direction with nothing but sex on his mind.

He's irresistible. Very self-aware without shame of his good looks.

My first experience with Jude Law was through Gattaca. It was a mighty fine introduction. And then he went and outdid himself with Dickie Greenleaf.

Which film does the shot with the flashbulb and scarred face come from?

the first 3 things i saw him in: WILDE, GATTACA, TALENTED MR. RIPLEY were a potent combination and he easily became one of my favorite actors.

so excited that he's getting such good reviews in DOM HEMINGWAY

san francinema - that one is from ROAD TO PERDITION. one of the first films where he played against his golden looks with brown teeth and the top of his head shaved. so creepy and rodent-like in it...

I have never found him attractive. Not even as I can see why others like him but he is not my type. I just can't see what others must be seeing. He also seems to be not aging well. I am female and older than Jude.

Favorite Jude Law look: butt naked on Broadway in Indiscretions (1995), co-starring Kathleen Turner, Eileen Atkins, Roger Rees and Cynthia Nixon.

I adore jude. I've met him a few times. he is very handsome, extremely talented and just plain sweet. can never get enough of his films and one should see him on stage....terrific actor.

I'm with Paul. As pretty as he is on screen (Gattaca stands out for me), nothing beats the real thing, wet, naked (with just his shoes), on stage, being brilliant on top of everything else.

That was a terrific production. Turner, Law and Nixon were at the top of their game with Atkins and Rees right on their heels. Act II with the staircase from hell is stuck in my mind.

Jude's Dickie was his yummiest role...

Henry &Paul --so jealous that you guys saw that. I wasn't yet in New York but love the cast and read about it in magazines (sigh)

Very talented and underrated, though I think Dom Hemingway is one of his worst performances.
