Guardian Tim Robey has a lovely tribute to TV & film star James Garner (RIP) who I'll always remember best for Murphy's Romance and Victor/Victoria in the 1980s

And, finally, are you excited for Festival Season yet?
I'm trying to remain calm as I make plans but NYFF isn't making staying calm any easier what with their Opening Night Film (Gone Girl's world premiere) Centerpiece (Inherent Vice) and Closing Night (Birdman which is scheduled for Venice as well). Tomorrow TIFF holds their opening news conference and we'll hear more about their plans as well. Here's some speculation from a Toronto news site which suggests that Reese Witherspoon is going to be a major presence and you can probably safely assume that Maps to the Stars will also be there given TIFF's love of Cronenberg.

James Garner is the reason I have never loved Ryan Gosling as much as I should. Watching The Notebook I was like he's ok but he's no James Garner. Who will be James Garner now?
Garner made it all look so easy. He was so perfect in Victor/Victoria. I can't imagine anyone else making that role work as well. His calm, self possession and confidence in who he was, was so necessary as the center of the storm with all the other misfits surrounding him.
Hell yes I'm excited for fall fests. I keep telling myself to slow down and enjoy the rest of the summer, but I can't wait for tiff and NYFF!
My favorite James Garner movie is 36 Hours. It's tense, spare, and clever. I also like Victor/Victoria, Support Your Local Sheriff, the two Doris Day movies, the Notebook. I haven't seen all his movies.
The two things I like best about James Garner are:
1) When I look at him, I think you're just like me (although that's obviously not quite what's happening). It's like instead of looking at an actor, you're seeing the action through his eyes.
2) When I look at Garner with his female costar I think, yes, he's just the perfect partner for her. Consider just how many actresses that he's the perfect partner for: Gena Rowlands, Julie Andrews, Joan Hackett, Doris Day, Sally Field, Eva Marie Saint, Audrey Hepburn, Mariette Hartley, and later as Sandra Bullock's father, etc. He listens to his female costars, he appreciates them, he gets on their wavelength. He has an easy and natural place in our hearts.
