BYO YNMS: Interstellar, November Man, Nightcrawler,Child of God, Cantinflas

Is it just me or are the trailers all coming in huge bundles lately? Space 'em out a little bit PR peeps, why don't you? Herewith, some I missed writing up so that you don't miss them. Bring your own Yes No Maybe So action to the comments.

I'm purposefully not watching Interstellar since I wrote up the first teaser and I only needed the cast list to convince me to see it and I don't want to know any more before seeing it. That said, I miss Anne Hathaway like forrealz muchly so it wasn't an easy decision. Five trailers after the jump

Interstellar This is really hard for me not to watch because I miss Anne Hathaway with great muchness but I will survive. The film opens November 7th. Here's what I had to say about the teaser.

November Man Pierce Brosnan capitalizing smartly on his ex-Bond rep and there's another ex-Bond player in the mix as well in Olga Kurlyenko (Quantum of Solace). Though the person who most stands to gain from this one is Luke Bracey who has yet to break out and is playing the mentee role, here. Despite the title the film opens on August 27th. Yes No or Maybe So for you?

Nightcrawler Jake Gyllenhaal playing a skinny driven crime scene reporter. Since it's Gyllenhaal I'm in without seeing a frame. Bonus points: possibly interesting supporting cast including Riz Ahmed (Four Lions), Rene Russo, and Bill Paxton. Extra Major Yes Please Bonus Points: Robert Elswit, one of the greatest working cinematographers, is on DP duty for debut director Dan Gilroy (yes he's the younger brother of director Tony Gilroy of Michael Clayton fame... but he's also married to Rene Russo!). Yes No or Maybe So for you?

Child of God. James Franco is still trying to be a director. The film stars Scott Haze who may or may not be a rising star. We shall see. Jason previously wrote about Franco's performance art in press conference form regarding this one

Cantinflas. I saw this trailer quite a long time ago and meant to share it. That's primarily because we're all awards fanatics here and this is an unexpected biopic on a Mexican film star who Hollywood loved in the 50s. He won a Golden Globe and was a major player in Best Picture winner Around the World in 80 Days (1956)

Cantinflas: No. And Oscar and Globe consideration WILL NOT HAPPEN. Why? Because this is basically a giant slap in the face reminder of one of their biggest mistakes.
Nightcrawler: Maybe so. I get the sense that the trailer is edited in a way to hide that this is a rookie filmmaker making something fairly episodic. Plus, Gyllenhaal's clipped speaking style here could go either way, either being really great or irritatingly under emotional.
Child of God: No. I might check out Franco's Faulkner adaptations, but other, better, filmmakers have already taken their successful cracks at McCarthy and this will likely only be a pale imitation of those.
The November Man: No. It looks like RED 2.5 and I think I'll be waiting for the much more stylish Kingsman: The Secret Service, to be honest.
Interstellar: Um...No. This trailer is starting to completely betray Nolan as a total one trick pony in terms of aesthetic and narrative tone, even as he digs himself into things that SHOULD be interesting change-ups that lend him a bit more mystery like Inception and this.

volvagia -- surprised to hear a "no" on interstellar but then, i haven't watched the trailer so i should shut up.

re: nightcrawler. trying to make sense of anything gyllenhaal being potenitally irritating. does not make sense. :)

INTERSTELLAR - Maybe so...but I've developed a real boredom with Mattheew McC lately.

NOVEMBER MAN - Yes...since "The Ghost Writer," I've developed a real liking for Pierce Brosnan, and I also like this sort of comic riff on the spy story.

NIGHTCRAWLER - Maybe so...I normally like Jake, but he seems really deranged in this, so I'm uncertain.

CHILD OF GOD - No...even if Scott Haze is hawt (!), I can't really get into this sort of film.

CANTINFLAS - Yes...I like biopics, and I know next to nothing about Cantinflas, so I'm in.

Interstellar: Of course, yes.

November Man: Yes. For me, Brosnan still has it. He, like many other decent, likeable actors, is the best thing in mediocre movies, but I hope this one is better than just so-so. I read many of the Granger November Man books which certainly didn't get their due when they were originally published. For fans of spy novels, I highly recommend checking them out; most are out of print, so you'll have to get them in used bookstores or from a library.

Nightcrawler: Yes, but Jake looks so, um, gaunt. Really nice to see Rene Russo again. (just watched Thomas Crown Affair again on Netflix; so good)

Child of God: Actually looks intriguing. Annoyed that James Franco seems to be the internet/media/comic target for vitriol. Leave him alone. At least he's trying different stuff; no one seems to bash Joseph Gordon-Levitt in the same way for his different artistic endeavors.

Cantiflas: Yes, an international biopic that looks interesting and entertaining.

Interstellar

Anne Hathaway = Hell no
Jessica Chastain = Yes!

So, I'm a "maybe" for now.

Interstellar--No. Just another "The world is ending but we will save the it with rousing electronic music and serious actors being serious on screen (bonus points for tears and look how much money we spent!!)."

November Man--Yes. Its a genre I like, a cast I like and I liked the trailer. Depends on the word of mouth.

Nightcrawler--Maybe to No. Can't really put my finger on why, but something isn't right about that trailer.

Child of God--Maybe to No. Justified lite with teeth.

Cantinflas--Maybe to Yes. He was a genius and needs to be exposed to more people. Unless its really bad, I'll support it.

Interstellar - of course!

November Man - yep. I love Brosnan, and I'm a big fan of the "older men kicking ass" genre that Taken seems to have reignited. This looks like it could be one of the better examples of that.

Nightcrawler - maybe so, but I've honestly found everything about this movie so far to be fairly off putting.

Child of God - hell no.

Cantinflas - no thanks.

Whoa, Rene Russo, where has she been? Aside from the Thor films, I mean. Does anyone know why she has a major break from 2005-2011? She used to be everywhere. I remember all my friends didn't like her and didn't get why she had a career but I always liked her, she seemed like an underdog for some reason. And she was pretty great in the Thomas Crowne remake.

cantinflas just makes me think that in forty years audiences will be scratching their heads while watching the trailer for benigni

Interstellar: Yes! Haven't even seen the trailer but I was on board when Spielberg had on docket and still excited for it. Nolan seems a good fit for heady yet digestible wide-canvas blockbuster film-making, especially with the wonderful Hoyte van Hoytema is photographing. Also I plan to marry either Anne Hathaway or Jessica Chastain or both, so I'm there.
The November Man: Yes. I like Bronson a whole lot and Roger Donaldson recently directed two films I thought would suck (The Band Job and The World's Fastest Indian) that were delightful popcorn flicks.
Nightcrawler: Maybe so. Something tells me is will be a case of good performance but weak film.
Child of God: No. Call me when they make a film of Suttree.
Cantinflas: Maybe so. Biopics about actors and filmmakers often fall flat but that's usually because that subject is already overexposed, not the case here. Also he really tickled me is the otherwise unremarkable Around the World in Eighty Days.

Par--that is the funniest thing I've read all day!

Nathaniel, I think you should break the rules and watch INTERSTELLAR. I don't think the trailer gives THAT much away, though we see way more of the world of the film and its expanse than the teaser and first trailer gave us; that SAID, do NOT look at the IMDB page. Character names have been added, and I think they spoil something about the story that the trailer did not give away at all.

and YES to Rene Russo on NIGHTCRAWLER!! looks fierce!

Mike M. is always trashing Anne Hathaway . Get a life dude .

Interstellar: No. Generally speaking, I prefer trailers with as less dialogue as possible. In this case listening to (the usual) Chriistopher Nolan lines read as big (preachy) statements was overkill in just a couple of minutes.

November Man. No. it looks as generic as they come, I actually stopped the video midway.

Nightcrawler. Maybe so. At least the trailer bothers to try to sell it. Looks intriguing

Child of God. I don't really think so. Just not interested.

Cantinflas. Maybe so, if the reviews are raves. I'm curious to know what Mexicans think of Oscar Jaenada's accent. He can be amazing, but I found the accent was a little on and off. And what they think about casting a Spanish actor for playing their iconic national movie star.

Nathaniel you MUST watch the Interstellar trailer. I was gasping for breath at the visuals/performance glimpses, and I don't think they give much away at all. For me this is the trailer of the year so far.

July 31, 2014 | Unregistered CommenterTrace

CHILD OF GOD is not a good movie, but it's weird to note that, well, James Franco is at least getting *better*. Yikes.

I'm also not watching the INTERSTELLAR trailer. Saw the NIGHTCRAWLER trailer at LUCY and I am in. I love a good serving of urban decay. Looks like something from the '90s, which I actually think is a positive. Plus, Rene Russo!

am I the only one thinking that Chastain might be cast as matthew's adult daughter in Interstellar?
