Time to Head to the Theaters -- A Big Weekend for Oscar-Watching
Damn, Hollywood. Spread the wealth a little right? After two relatively quiet months for adult moviegoers all distributors have decided en masse that YOU are going to the movie theaters this weekend. As a result they've just released everything. All at once. If you've been all 'Netflix and chill' or dragging your feet with the movies for any reason, time to get up, stretch, text your friends and hit a movie. Or two. Or three. You don't want to get behind because it doesn't let up from here on out. (Next weekend is Suffragette and the following weekend Our Brand is Crisis)
The images below will take you to our reviews (or the last major post on the film) if we've written one. If you're all like "this looks like the sidebar" it's our reminder to you that sidebars are there for a reason. Use them if you want to look up a particular film or topic.

Crimson Peak! Sicario! Also, have tickets early next week to a screening of Room followed by a Q&A with Emma Donoghue--really looking forward to it.
And deciding between two screenings the following week of The Assassin and Anomalisa. Which one should I pick? What's the likelihood of either being released soon in a city that is not LA or NYC? I love martial arts movies but I also enjoy Charlie Kaufman's quirkiness. Which one needs to be seen on the big screen right now?
Pam -- hmmmm. of those two I think i prefer THE ASSASSIN but i am in the total minority on ANOMALISA. people are just obsessed with it for some reason.
People are obsessed with Charlie Kaufman. Hopefully he'll reunite with Spike Jonze for another movie. Because neither of them have topped Adaptation outside of each other.
Saw Crimson Peak,I still don't get Chastain.
I just saw The Martian last night and was so glad it was as fun AND smart as it was. Totally deserves its blockbuster status.
Steve Jobs and The Walk and Crimson Peak are next up.... The Walk because I have a feeling it will be gone from Imax screens soon, Steve Jobs because the reviews have been breathless, and Crimson Peak because I love a good Gothic ghost story and it's been a LONG TIME since we've had one. Plus Guillermo del Toro plus the costumes. I'll have to end up seeing it on my own though, since my boyfriend and regular movie-going friends are not into horror.
UGH. AND Labyrinth of Lies. And Goodnight Mommy. AND the restoration of Rocco and His Brothers at Film Forum. And the mini-Hitchcock retrospective at FSLC.
WHY is this all happening at the same time?!?!?
We were headed out to The Martian last weekend when my son called with what he thought was a broken arm (false alarm, but everyone in the Emergency Room also thought it was broken). So now we're behind and we want to see EVERYTHING.
I've seen and loved Assassin and Crimson Peak. I'll probably watch Beasts of No Nation (thanks, Netflix!) and The Martian this weekend, and then try to deal with the glut of other stuff (both old and new) that I want to catch in theaters - 99 Homes, Sicario, The Walk, Labrynth of Lies, Bridge of Spies, on and on - later.
I'm going to Bridge of Spies tomorrow and am going to watch Beasts of No Nation on Netflix - curious to watch an Oscar contender in its debut weekend on tv. But I'll catch Steve Jobs, Truth and Room as soon they're open here, they're all high priority for me.
Grandma and The Martian are very worth seeing!
Well, Labyrinth of Lies and Freeheld are just opening here in Montréal today (what's with the slow rollout for Freeheld?), as is Steve Jobs, so those are my priorities this weekend. There's always Bridge of Spies, of course, but I might pass that up for Deepa Mehta's Beeba Boys.
"Freeheld" because I have a feeling it won't stay in theatre very long & even if the reactions are mixed to bad, I mean GOD is in it. How bad can it be?
Caught Victoria, which, eh. And saw Room early for my area on Wednesday (!!!).
Steve Jobs is probably at the top of my list. Maybe I'll sneak in a cheap Crimson Peak screening this week. Beasts of No Nation can be whenever.
Room, Spotlight this weekend; Suffragette (with Streep and Mulligan in attendance), Carol with Mara, Nagy and Anne Marie ;-) in attendance during the week.
Saw Beasts of No Nation ... A masterpiece of film making
It is going to haunt me for days ...
Saw Freeheld on Thursday (figuring it wouldn't be around much longer) and seeing Room tomorrow night. The next one I want to see after that is Steve Jobs.
Already saw Sicario, so Steven Jobs, Crimson Peak and Bridge Of Spies are the priority this weekend. As for the rest...
The Walk - Would've seen it already but theaters are trying to force people to see the 3D version by only having one or two 2D showings, so I might never get to it.
Freeheld - I probably should've saw that instead of wasting my Moviepass to try to see Steven Jobs last Sunday but that probably shows how much I want to see this film. I thought the trailers looked okay but the meh buzz and the amount of other films out means that I probably won't get to it.
99 Homes - Looked pretty damn good but again, there's other films I'm more interested in seeing.
Truth - The trailer didn't do much for me but it might be a big Oscar contender, so I might end up seeing it.
Beast Of No Nation - It's on Netflix, so... I'll be seeing it on Netflix.
Grandma, The Assassin, Labyrinth Of Lies - Never saw the trailer for the former and I never even heard of the latter two, so I'll be passing on those.
Room - Looks very good but I probably won't see it for another week or two.
Daniel -- passing on Grandma despite all of our recommendations? Never heard of Oscar contenders in foreign film we've been discussing right here. ARGH. Our work is never done.
i wouldn't bother with The Walk in 2D and i never say this. It's more of a theme park spectacle than a movie so if it's not in like IMAX 3D its' very skippable.
OMG Room.
(A little sad that Joan Allen doesn't make it onto TFE's list of 29 BSA contenders. Sure, the film is basically a two-hander, but Allen's performance is solid, perfectly modulated and—unlike some on the list—truly supporting. Also more likely to be acknowledged than at least five on the list, I think.)
Paul -- i will have to rethink this. but again things change quickly this time of year (hence some of the "that seems impossible" people on the chart ;)
Beasts of No Nation was so harrowing and beautiful. Great achievement. Crimson Peak was disappointing except for the look obvs.
Just saw Crimson Peak.
Crimson Peak makes other movies look like dusty dry diet biscuits.
Nathaniel - Now that I think about it, you did do an article on The Assassin. Admittedly, though, Documentaries and Foreign Films are my blindspot when it comes to Oscar (and perhaps in general). I'll watch the trailer for Grandma and I might try to go out to see it but honestly, there's only so many films I can see. As for The Walk; I need to be really excited about a film to see it in IMAX 3D and I'm only marginally interested in seeing The Walk in general, so I guess I'll just skip it.
