Gotham Nominees: Teenage Girls, Lesbian Romances,Trans Women

You might think that October is too early to get nominations for Best of the Year but you'd be wrong.

Diary of a Teenage Girl scored big leading the Gotham nominations

At least according to the IFP Gotham Independent Film Awards. They're the East Coast answer to the Indie Spirit Awards and perhaps we're imagining it but it's almost as if they announce earlier every year.  They're also juried which is why their nominations are sometimes really cool / odd. Like most of the Oscar precursors worth loving, Gotham marches to their own drum. So what's the takeaway and reward for these films? A fresh flag planted down that you really should watch them and for indie films, that's a big deal.

The biggest winners this morning are surely Tangerine (3 nominations) and The Diary of a Teenage Girl (4 nominations). Both were hits at Sundance and well reviewed when they arrived but both are small enough to slip through "Best of" cracks on critics list and with awardage. But both are strong enough filmmaking visions and entertaining and even accessible enough that with enough concentrated attention it will be possible to imagine them cracking a surprise big nomination somewhere... like, say, The Golden Globes.

The other big winner is everyone -- we finally have an awards lineup that in interested in female voices.  Full list follows

Four of the five feature nominees are about women, two films about lesbians received nominations, and female directors, documentarians, and screenwriters are also nominated.

Of the films that did well with Gotham today, most have already made the theatrical rounds but three have yet to open: the indie James White and two Oscar seeking biggies: Tom McCarthy's sober journalism drama / sharp crowd-pleaser Spotlight, and Todd Haynes's swoon-worthy 50s melodrama Carol. They all open in November so watch for them in your local listings as they say.

If you took out Bel Powley and left the other 5, how incredible would that Best Actress line up be at the oscars!!!

YAY LILY! You keep going, girl!

Very happy for Wiig, also, what a great nomination.

October 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Looks like Lily may get the veteran nod.

Strange too that Neal Huff and Len Cariou, both in pivotal roles, are not listed among the ensemble of Spotlight.

What are the two films about lesbians? I count one about lesbians (Carol) and two about bisexuals (Appropriate Behavior and Diary of a Teenage Girl)?

Hmmmmm two things:

- Shouldn't Kitana Kiki Rodriguez and Mya Taylor be nominated as Breakthrough ACTRESSES? They are trans women, right?

- I don't know if it was elligible, but Frederick Wiseman's In Jackson Heights should be nominated as Best Documentary.

Sorry, I just saw the category is mixed, my bad! But I stand by Wiseman. :)

This would be a fine Best Actress lineup and just might be close to what it ends up being.

Hurray for Paul Dano. Never was a big fan but I loved his performance in Love & Mercy. Stunning work.

Where's Rooney? How can they love the movie, Cate and not her. Or maybe they bought that is supporting.

summer -- i can't even but probably. IT'S SO A DUAL LEAD movie. They each have their own scenes alone and their scenes together. totally equal.

Another awards season. Here we go.

Gulp.

Very good for Brie Larson, she or Saoirse Ronan or Charlotte Rampling must win the Oscar to Best Actress, amazing performances by all of them. Please Academy give one of them the Oscar and not JLaw again for another film by David O. Russell, we are boring of those two.

I think they just bypassed Rooney. Because they don't have a supporting category, they nominate exceptional supporting performances in the "actor" and "actress" categories - last year Hawke and Arquette were nominated for Boyhood, and arguably Dano and Shannon are supporting.

October 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Without an actual supporting category, I think we cans just gladly go along assuming Mara didn't make the cut. It's not like the other five women gave terrible performances. Not sure even when we have an organisation like this nominating Danner and Wiig (!) and the likes we have to still criticise them for NOT nominating someone. Like... not everyone can be nominated.

Super happy for Tangerine, Teenage Girl, Wiig, Akhavan, and even though I wasn't the biggest fan of the movie (I was positive on it, but not exceptionally so) those two nods for Heaven Knows What show this organisation really know what's up.

How is Rory Culkin a "breakthrough" actor?

October 22, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterIrvin

Glenn policing the comments again! I wasn't critizing, just wondering. Isn't this what the comment section is for ???

October 23, 2015 | Unregistered Commentersummer

Good lineups overall, but I'm confused: aren't While We're Young and Welcome to Me movies from *last year*?

October 23, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

Summer, it's not so much policing as just hoping people can keep things earth-bound. We have a whole season of this!

October 24, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterGlenn Dunks

Yay Bel Powley and Yay Kristen Wiig!! Amazing
