Your recent Q&A post got me thinking about Best Actress (obviously) and I was wondering if Academy voters ever actually look back and regret not nominating performances like Tilda's turn in "Julia" or Joan's turn in "Upside of Anger." I wonder if they even know those movies exist, if they even know those are career-capping perfs for actresses they loved at some point.
I watched Scream the other day for the umpteenth time and it got me wondering: Will Drew Barrymore ever give an amazing performance like that, or the one she gave in Grey Gardens, again?
I also wouldn't mind another Riding in Cars with Boys level performance again. I thought she was fabulous in that too.
That despite a stack of unwatched DVDs, my hankering is to rewatch Skyfall and Zero Dark 30.
I think I am done with serious film for awhile and just want to have fun.
(I know, I know. Both of those are considered serious films in some circles, but I know them both so well that I no longer have to marvel over performances or lighting and can just enjoy the "big boy adventure" aspect of them.)
Marsha Mason needs to be on the big screen now. Movie gods, please hear me.
When Julianne gets nominated for Freeheld, will she enter de facto perennial territory from then on? I mean I'm not complaining...
I saw Timbuktu and I am DEVASTATED
I saw Cake the other day and really enjoyed it. I'll admit to tearing up near the end. I found it both touching and funny, especially the relationship between Jennifer, who was great, and Adriana Barraza. I would definitely watch it again. Also, this film got me into Sam Worthington!
Will Sicario be Emily Blunt's chance at a Best Actress nomination? September release date/ directed by Denis Villeneuve.
When will Nina Arianda get her breakthrough role? I'm really looking forward to seeing her in season 3 of Hannibal. Although that show doesn't treat the women they have all that well.
I've heard some interesting rumblings about a proposed Veronica Lake bio-pic called The Lost Blonde written by the author who co-wrote her autobiography. No casting yet but apparently the pieces of the project are starting to fall into place according to the author's website. Who knows if it will work out but if done properly it could really propel the right actress, maybe Teresa Palmer, forward. She had a hell of a life so there's more than enough make for compelling viewing.
Well, the possible return to five Best Picture nominees is definitely on my mind, as is how much I love The Sound of Music. But also, I'm feeling a bit sad, because I've got to move flat next week and haven't yet found a new place to rent. I can stay with my parents until I find somewhere, but I'm sad because I love where I live now but also because I don't feel like watching any films at the moment!
Netflix's "Oscary" selection is on my mind. I saw Shirley Valentine had been added recently and IMMEDIATELY watched it. It wasn't as bad as I had anticipated - and now I get to check off one more box on my Oscar completist/sickness checklist.
They also have Marty and The French Connection, which I need to watch, but just can't bring myself to hit the play button on. Just don't seem actressy enough.

I just read an article in the Atlantic calling Fräulein Maria a manic pixie dream girl. Cracked me up.
Also finally saw Whiplash over the weekend and can't stop thinking about the last 15 minutes.
I wish that TCM's 31 Days of Oscar went on indefinitely. Still so many films to see on Oscar's list!
Walter Hill's Whatever Happened to Baby Jane remake with Streep and Spacek is now listed as in development on IMDB....

Disney's upcoming "Cinderella"! I absolutely can't wait to see it. I'm such a sucker for an earnest, old-fashioned fairy tale love story. :)
Travis: The French Connection is so good. Be prepared for a ride that starts slowly (but shockingly) and gets faster and faster. True - not a lot of actressing involved, but the scene with the Three Degrees is surely enough to compensate!
Russian silent movies are on my mind.
I read a novel, "My Life as a Silent Movie", where the protagonist finds out she was adopted and her biological father was a Russian silent movie star. The silent movie history in the background of the book is so strange and different.
The oddest fact, to me, is that Russian silent movie stars were employed to film different endings to films imported from Europe. The new Russian ending was always tragic. If the European movie had the lovers saved from a raging river, in the new Russian ending the lovers drowned. Death, misery, and unhappiness mandatory.
just saw The Last Five Years, heartbreaking! also when I remembered that it's The Sound of Music's 50th anniversary and seeing Anna Kendrick briefly being Maria gives me life
After every episode of Looking, I get a hankering to watch Weekend again. But in my (recent) fragile emotional state, I don't, because I fear the ending will wreck me. But it's SO FUCKING GOOD!
I caught Shakespeare in Love on TCM the other night, having not seen it for quite a while, and it's still a fantastic movie. It gets so much flack for beating out Saving Private Ryan, and for that the public consciousness seems to have forgotten what an intelligently written and beautifully constructed work SiL actually is.
Ben H -- agreed. I think it's a better film than Saving Private Ryan but Best Picture wins often turn people against movies.
SiL. More Downton love. Mr. Carson was the nurse in SiL (and he was delightful).
