I love the random cartoony paws on her jacket.
I saw this golden poster for Melissa McCarthy’s upcoming Spy comedy and I couldn’t not talk about. It’s so amazingly silly yet self-serious. It’s precisely the type of eye-catching visual gag that this marketing campaign needs (better than the one-note poster Margaret discussed back in January). More importantly, it’s exactly the careful tonal balance the film will have to pull off if it’s going to succeed critically as well as commercially. I know it’s supposed to make me think of Goldfinger (and perhaps of Goldmember?) but all I could think was the posters for Dominic Cooper’s The Devil’s Double, a movie I know everything about exclusively from this (NSFW) post (thanks JA!)
They're clearly going for the Bond tie-ins with these character posters and why wouldn't they? If you're going to riff off the spy genre, there's really nowhere else to mine.
Perhaps it’s my affection for pre-Bridesmaids (ie. Gilmore Girls) McCarthy that’s getting to me, but I am hoping that her softer comedic side resurfaces at some point in her career. May Spy do the trick? Is the presence of real-life action figure Jason Statham and Jude Law in full-Bond mode enough to sway you to give Spy a chance this summer?

Actually, I love her in Gilmore Girls. Even among so many charming / quirky characters, her Sookie still stands out.
The almost full theater I saw FURIOUS 7 in this weekend absolutely loved the trailer. Granted that's the very definition of anecdotal, so we'll see.
I just have to say it every time, but Melissa McCarthy is a full fledged movie star and that's so awesome.
I first saw Melissa in the very underrated Christina Applegate sitcom Samantha Who?, and she really stood out with her comic timing. Her character was much softer and sweeter than anything else I've seen her play, and I loved it.
The paw prints are actually on a totebag on her shoulder. Even better.
I will probably see this at some point, but doubtful it is in the theater. I'm not a big McCarthy fan (I don't find obesity funny and I consider fat jokes cruel.).
It's gotten amazing reviews on Rotten Tomatoes so far! Can't wait to see it! :)
She kinda did the softer thing in St. Vincent, right? I mean, that was a real person and not just a cartoonish oaf and that was just back in September.
Jude Law in full-Bond mode will do it for me
I don't care anything about Statham (I barely know who he is) or Law. I'm seeing it for McCarthy!
I liked when they released the SPECTRE poster spoof, like, the same day as the SPECTRE poster.
I saw an early screening last week. It's really funny, and McCarthy is great. The movie has a few problems (mostly deciding whether McCarthy's character is a good spy or a buffoon), but the laughs come very consistently. It'll be a big hit. (And I fully expect a decent slice of Oscar pundits to push Jason Statham for Best Supporting Actor. He's frighteningly committed to his self-parody bit.)
