Tra-Link-La

Deadline RIP character actress Elizabeth Wilson from stage, tv, and film (Roz in Nine to Five & Mrs Braddock inThe Graduate!) passed away at 94
Bryan Singer James McAvoy as Professor X finally going bald of X-Men: Apocalypse
Towleroad Natalie Portman as Ruth Baader Ginsburg?!
CHUD the ongoing drama of Jennifer Lawrence's paycheck for the upcoming Passengers, a sci-fi drama with Chris Pratt. She's not budging on her 20 million, which is double Pratt's salary though he's the lead. Will Sony cave to save face from all those wage disparity complaints after leaked emails?
Boy Culture tells us about a new LGBT movie That's Not Us about three couples on a weekend getaway. Sounds good
Empire Charlize Theron to star as a spy in The Coldest City, based on a graphic novel
Pajiba highlights from the Alex Garland's Ex Machina AMA
Antagony & Ecstasy another fine take on Ex Machina

Small Screen
Coming Soon NBC picked up a series based on Steven Spielberg's Minority Report. I know it was probably impossible to top Samantha Morton's precog but the series will focus on a precog only a male precog zzzz. No offense Stark Sands who I've enjoyed in other things!
/Film ... and that's not the only movie becoming a TV series. Next season will also give us serialized versions ofUncle Buck and Limitless

Cannes News
Cannes Mother of the French New Wave Agnès Varda (Cleo from 5 to 7, Vagabond, The Gleaners and I) to receive an Honorary Palme D'Or. Yaaas.
Film Doctor UK advice for filmmakers attending Cannes -- this is from last year but there are lots of practical thoughts that apply to any year, non filmmakers and other smaller festivals, too
Guardian with Gaspar Noé's Love on the way a look back at the festival's history of erotic cinema
Awards Daily Sasha geers up for Cannes but still seems hung up on last year's awards race dramas

Stage
Playbill looks back at very tight Best Musical races from the past (West Side Story vs. The Music Man, etcetera) with Fun Home, Something Rotten, and An American in Paris battling it out on Tony supremacy this season
Gold Derby Outer Critics Circle Awards. With Fun Home ineligible American in Paris snatches up trophies. Kristin Chenoweth prevails in the very tight Best Actress race (will Tony go for Chita, Cheno or Kelli O'Hara?)

Showtune to Go
With American in Paris celebrating its Tony nominations, why not a little Gene Kelly to brighten your Monday? Here's Kelly doing "Tra La La." Hollywood never had a more cheekily charming male movie star, give or take Cary Grant.

I hope Sony looks elsewhere for the Lawrence role. Why not Lupita Nyong'o?

Yay Agnes Varda! She was in NYC for a series of screenings at Lincoln Center last month and I'm so bummed that I wasn't able to go and meet her.

Aw, thanks for the Gene Kelly clip. Saw my local high school's production of Singing in the Rain this weekend which was great. The kid playing Don Lockwood certainly studied Gene's fabulous big smile...and he could even tap dance a little.

JLaw has some nerve asking for 20 million dollars. With the performances she gives, she's lucky anyone is willing to pay her to act at all.

May 11, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterLynn

Pay in Hollywood has nothing to do with talent, its about bankability.

Both are ludicrously overpaid, but double the salary of Chris Pratt's--that sounds about right. And that's coming from someone who thinks that Chris Pratt is a natural movie star.

Lynn

You're a terrible judge of acting.

That is all.

May 11, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterTr

caroline: Exactly. Pratt hasn't proven people are really drawn to him yet, so even $10 million is kinda generous.

May 11, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

if chris is getting 10 million, it's not absurd that j-law asks for double of that. (and she's the female lead I suppose)
he has GOTG basically, she has oscars + hunger games + x-men + longer time as internet darling.

Lawrence has more box office hits than Pratt who still has not proven he can carry a movie by himself...Kelley was naturally charming and sexy

JLaw is also overrated IMHO. Her future as an actress beyond Katniss is unknown. And the second you start demanding $20 million per picture is when you begin to decline. (Bad vibe about Joy). No one stays at that price range for very long, especially now when cartoons and Marvel films make the most money. Serena showed that she can suck as an actress, and for a SciFi they can save a lot of money by dumping her.

I have no problem with JLaw asking for a salary like that. She is a star and it's insane that Jeremy Renner of all people made more than her in American Hustle.

Besides, it is not like this is a little indie she is asking to be paid this much for. She is probably the most marketable actress they can get in the role right now, her presence will lead to media coverage & fan interest which ultimately can be converted into dollars.

sarah t -- absolutely agree that it's dangerous to overpice yourself. One thing that I really respected about Brad Pitt back in the day was how relatively inexpensive he was... his salary inched up, he didn't take it for granted and now he's worth every penny of a very high salary. Too many stars jack their prices way up and a lot of times, it's insane because nowadays the franchises are the stars. when you overprice yourself you start looking like a commodity rather than an actor and then you can more easily fall out of favor.

Chris Pratt has demonstrated ZERO box office pull. He might well hvae it but we won't find out from Guardians or Jurassic World or Indiana Jones if he does that one because those are all being sold on the franchises themselves. He'll need his own American Sniper or Blind Side where he's the selling point, to determine if he can get asses in seats all by himself.

Doesn't DiCaprio gest $70 millions per movie? That's a lot for such a bland actor.

May 12, 2015 | Unregistered CommenterMe34

Streep is another who works cheap, but she never balks at promotion.
