Box Office: Ted 2 No Match for Jurassic 4 & Inside Out 1

Weird. Despite a lot of love for Seth MacFarlane's Ted (2012) just three years ago its sequel significantly underperformed with a much weaker opening... like $21 whole million weaker. I say weird because nowadays audiences tend to run screaming with wallets wide open to anything sequelish that they liked before. Witness the explosive returns for Pitch Perfect 2 (which has tripled the gross of its predecessor... also three years old). Speaking of sequels... Jurassic World is now the biggest grosser of 2015 and its only in its 3rd weekend with a typically huge box office holiday fast approaching. The weird thing is that people don't seem to love it. They only seem to love being able to return to that park... which bodes really well for Jurassic Park-World 5,6,7, etcetera one supposes.
Magic Mike XXL and Terminator 5 arrive Wednesday but neither are as family oriented as the current top two so the holiday week could well be huge for all four. Unless Terminator G goes the way of Ted 2 under the 'nah, been there' umbrella?

Notes
Jurassic World is the first film to hit $500 million in US theaters since The Avengers (2012). The latter went on to gross $623.3 million but it took a week longer to hit the half billion mark. Jurassic World may well surpass The Avengers but I hope Avatar's $749 million US record is safe since Jurassic World would be a really lame #1 of all time since it's basically a remake. Finally, incredibly Cinderella is still in theaters, albeit only 235 of them, but in its 16th week it has now passed the $200 million mark and seems likely to end the year in the box office top ten (it's number #4 right this moment but will soon slip a rung). The fairy tale doesn't come to BluRay and DVD until September 15th.

Re-watched Beyond the Lights, it's on netflix now, and I loved it a lot more this time around. Really sad this ended up flopping at the box office. Gugu is a star.
I saw Love & Mercy. The film was solid, the acting outstanding. Potentially 4 acting nominations.
elizabeth -- it's always exciting when Netflix gets something recent like that (seems increasingly rare) since then more people will immediately see it. Good movie. I loved Minnie Driver in it, too.

Glad Ted 2 didn't do so well. I was annoyed it beat Magic Mike at the box office three years ago. MM was a better movie. Funny that both sequels are opening the same week again. I actually saw XXL at a pre-screening. I thought it was going to be more commercial but it kept some of the qualities of why I liked the first one. A good and entertaining film but not as good as the original.
I was surprised to see that Whiplash and Foxcatcher are on Netflix already too!
Watched Ted 2, and now I can't re-watch Mean Girls without thinking of Gollum, or re-watch LOTR without thinking of Amanda Seyfried. Apart from that nothing is new in this sequel.
Also watched Dark Places, not sure has it opened in the US yet. I wasn't a big fan of Gone Girl so I didn't have much anticipation for this one. Charlize Theron was the only reason I was in there. She did her best using her ice-queen quality in a low profile and quiet performance but the character-arc was not properly developed and we never really believe in her change of motivation in investigating her family's murder. Christina Hendricks was equally good.
The problem is records are going to be continually broken as ticket prices soar. $500 million used to seem like some unreachable target, but it's becoming more and more common.
I saw Jurassic World twice - once with my boyfriend, once with my mom and sister. I had a blast both times. It hit the Dino sweet spot I've been wishing for all these years. Some of the early, shameless nostalgia stuff grated, but I mostly thought it cleverly played on and expanded the scope of the earlier films. Found Pratt & Howard quite appealing and fun together, and didn't mind the old school types they were playing. And even with that aside, there are some tremendously fun, suspenseful sequences here. Treverow is not on Spielberg's level, obviously, but I frankly don't get a lot the negatives being hurled his way. JW feels like a totally worthy sequel (and not remake, IMO) to the original, and was a LOT better than I expected or hoped it would be. I am confident I'll be getting pleasure from rewatching this for years.
In between dino dates, I saw Wild and continued catching up on orphan black. I was really impressed and moved by Wild. As with Still Alice, I wish it hadn't just been marginalized as an actress showcase (though it is also that). It struck me as being easily better than at least half of last year's best picture nominees, quiet and unpretentious and elegantly constructed at every level.
I'm really enjoying orphan black too. Halfway through season 3. Helena's scorpion bestie is amazing.
The more financially successful Jurassic World becomes, the more I hate it.
At any rate, I watched [REC] 4 on Netfilx over the weekend because when I start a film series, no matter how badly it derails, I like to see it through to completion. Suffice it to say, the entire enterprise could have stopped with the first one, the second if I'm in a good mood.
I watched Revolutionary Road last night, which I still feel is a great movie. Winslet and DiCaprio have amazing chemistry, even when the characters they are playing are at each other's throats. The film doesn't seem talked about much these days -it came out, what, 7 years ago?- but it's one I I still admire a lot - helps that the source material is rich. Fun to see the actress who plays the sardonic female guard in Orange is the New Black in a bit right at the start.

I saw Me and Earl and the Dying Girl and while found some of it charming and well-done, I had also had a lot of minor issues and then, toward the end, one major issue that has really stuck in my craw. Without giving too much away, I find the way they handle the "dying girl" (and how telling it is that she isn't given a name in the title for the sake of rhyming catchiness) borders on offensive.
Also saw Mighty Aphrodite for the Smackdown and am still making my way through season 3 of OITNB which is still entertaining, funny and original, but this season is kind of all over the place so far (I'm 4 episodes in).

Elizabeth, I just watched Beyond the Lights, and was entranced. Gugu and Nate were terrific, and what a great job of dodging cliches right and left and coming up with something fresh and resonant. The music was wonderful. I could watch it again right now.
Saw Spy and it exceeded all my expectations. Could Jason Statham get actual Oscar buzz? Call the pope.
Finished Season 1 of The Comeback--Lisa Kudrow is officially a comic genius. And how adorable is Jason Olive.
"Jurassic World" and loved every minute of it- Mr Spielberg still knows how to produce a Summer blockbuster. Mr Pratt was born to be a movie star action hero.
I will only note how dreadful the top 10 is. I know it's often like this in Summer, but there is not a single film on that list worth my time. Is Melissa McCarthy the only female lead who is not a cartoon character (and I am being generous here)? Sad. Good riddance to the film careers of mean boys Mark Wahlberg and Seth MacFarlane.
I watched episode 1 of Penny Dreadful, and was confused by Josh Hartnett's barely audible line delivery and the strangeness of Eva Green and Timothy Dalton. Maybe it gets better but I am starving for a good adult drama or thriller, whether on television or cinema. Help me Dios.
Speaking of Beyond the Lights, Cynthia Erivo (who sang IMO the best song in the movie "Fly Before You Fall") is going to play Celie in the revival of The Color Purple. I'm tickled pink... er... purple.
I saw Me and Earl and the Dying Girl. It was ok, I guess, but I'm rather surprised it won awards at Sundance. It was fairly standard.
As for Jurassic World, I know plenty of people who've loved it. They're not regular moviegoers admittedly, but they've made me feel snobby for not liking it.
"Penny Dreadfull" is a must if you are a fan of classic film horror it pays hommage to both the Universal monsters and the Hammer Films.
