I don't think this will hurt her chances... if anything the campaign and overall support for the movie will all be behind her. Just like Volver missing on the Foreign Film nod (and, arguably the script possibility) didn't harm Penelope Cruz's nomination.

I have not caught up with Elle yet (soon!) but from the sidelines it seems like Huppert supporters are setting themselves up for disappointment. Elle tackles female sexuality head on and there is no scarier topic for AMPAS. None. Zero. There was no way that movie was getting nominated and part of me thinks the snub does better for its inevitable cult status. That is a movie and a performance that will age very very well.

Sad that <I>Elle didn't get the foreign-language shortlist, but I was sort of expecting that. The subject matter is controversial and outside of the critics circles, the Academy is generally conservative with their choices. Isabelle may be the last shot of the film to gain Oscar traction.

I like Elle and I have a feeling it will be discussed for years afterwards. Maybe it is a bit ahead of it's time, I don't know. But Huppert should be Oscar-nominated at least.
