What will you see this weekend?

It's the perfect weekend to catch up on movies! Will you...

... catch up w/ Globe nominees (ElleHacksaw Ridge? Miss Sloane?) that are losing theaters?
... join the teeming masses for Rogue One (just reviewed) in that galaxy far far away?
... rubberneck the Razzie contender Collateral Beauty
... hit Oscar player Fences or Pablo Larraín's terrific Neruda in NYC or LA?
... check out Manchester by the Sea (just podcasted) now that it's gone wide?
... or maybe you're seeing Jackie or Lion or La La Land

Share your plans in the comments. There's just so much to see out there!

I saw Rogue One and liked it quite bit. Also saw Fences last night and didn't like it as much.

I saw Rogue One (BORING) and La La Land Thursday night. But I will see La La Land again before the end of the weekend. And probably Jackie.

La La Land was fantastic!

Saw "La La Land" last night and I swear I liked it well enough, but I also really want to make fun of all its dumber choices. High highs and low lows, for sure.

Speaking of highs and lows, tonight I'm doing "The Shallows" and "High Rise".

Well, most of these only open january here in Brazil. Neruda will be my choice for the weekend, can't wait. And Sully is out now, so if there's time for two movies it will be my number 2.

Going to see Loving before it skips town. As underwhelmed as your guys were on the podcast, you convinced me that I should watch Ruth Negga talk on the phone.

La La Land and I'ma cannot wait!

Moonlight finally opened in here (Quebec) so I caught up with it and it was glorious. Really loved it! Great performances all around, engaging leading character and the third chapter is wonderfully low key, slow, but powerful thanks to the two previous chapters. I'm a bit confused why Ali is the only one getting recognition for supporting actor. I love the performance but you could fill the whole category with just this movie and it wouldn't be ridiculous, still he's the only one getting nominations. Anyway, Loved it!

Also saw Manchester by the Sea and I really liked it too. Great performances. I waited for the catharsis to come during the whole movie, but then realized that's not the point, so I just enjoyed what I got instead.

I still have to wait a week for La La Land, Lion and Fences to open here (sigh) and I still have to wait for a whole month before Jackie opens here (double sigh).

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBensunce

Just watched Other People. Molly Shannon is so frigging great in it.

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBruno

I've just received another reminder of how out of touch I am. After being pretty unimpressed by Moonlight and Manchester by the Sea, I see Jackie. WOW!! I just can't get it out of my head. So far, my favorite English-language film of the year, maybe best overall (still love The Handmaiden to bits). Naturally, Jackie's having to struggle for any Awards recognition beyond Actress and a few visuals. Oh well.

Oops I'm still catching up to MOANA this weekend

Living in New Zealand, all the Oscar movies tend to come out in February or so so we hve to wait forever for them. This in mind, cinemas are showing La La Land 8 days early today so I quickly nabbed two tickets and am very excited!

Rogue One and finishing my binge of the disturbing London Spy.

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

Did "Jackie" today and "La La Land" tomorrow. Loved "Jackie."

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJonathan

I saw "Rogue One" today. Had problems with its execution and its lack of character development. But I loved how it stood apart from the Episodes and some of the performances. In particular by Donnie Yen and the always reliable Ben Mendelsohn.

Also, on Wednesday, I saw "Miss Sloane" and to me, Jessica Chastain gives the best performance by a lead actress this year thus far. I also loved the ensemble of actor. Especially Gugu Mbatha-Raw (Can Hollywood give her more lead roles, please?)

I'm staying home and watch whatever I can of Convoy as I'm aware it's the worst film that Sam Peckinpah has ever made yet I'm doing it to finish exploring the work of Sam Peckinpah as this and Osterman Weekend are the only ones I need to see at this moment.

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSteven

I saw Rogue One. I enjoyed it but, if it had not been part of nearly 40 years history of seeing Star Wars, then it probably would have just been another space adventure movie of no interest to me.

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered Commentervaus

I'll be seeing La La Land (otra vez) and Jackie (can't wait!).

OT: Can someone please explain to me what the hell is happening with the release date for The Founder? I'm starting to think that movie is a figment of the imagination.

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMareko

The late contenders haven't arrived where I live, either. Saw Captain Fantastic today and rewatched Hell or High Water.
I liked CF, I found it smart and interesting, but it didn't linger in my mind. The character that made the biggest impression on me was Frank Langella's grandfather: grieving, intimidating, entitled and decent all at once.
Hell or High Water is still fantastic.

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterGena

Saw both of Isabelle Huppert's big 2016 films this week. She's impressive in "Things to Come". And the movie's pretty absorbing. But -wow- "Elle" is amazing. Best new picture I've seen all year. Hope to hell she gets a nomination at least - because she's in a league of her own here, way above and beyond the competition.

Also @Gena: Couldn't agree more with your assessment of Frank Langella in "Captain Fantastic". You gave us a beautifully worded description of his multi-faceted performance.
I have reservations about the film, but - as far as I'm concerned - Langella and Ann Dowd should both be in the awards conversation this season.

I really want to see "La La Land"

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterJaragon

I saw a double feature of "Nocturnal Animals" and "Miss Sloane". That was absolutely the right order to see them in, for a while I thought the whole afternoon was going to be punishment city for uppity females.

Nocturnal Animals:
Amy Adams and Michael Shannon are not only skilled, talented, and beautiful (yes, I include Michael in beautiful) but also reliable, as they make silk purses out of their sow's ears of parts.

And Amy/Susan, you were absolutely right to leave Jake/Edward. He's weak, petty, and vindictive (and a crappy writer).

Miss Sloane:
Miss Sloane is the kind of role Al Pacino would have played on his heyday to great acclaim and a Best Picture, Best Actor nomination.

Chastain is marvellous, and I agree with Matt that the supporting cast is terrific. Gugu Mbatha-Raw, Alison Pill, Mark Strong. I've become a Mark Strong convert since he stopped playing evil villains and can be seen in protagonist roles ("A View From The Bridge" - heartbreaking).

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered Commenteradri

None of the contenders are showing near me :( So I watched 'Weiner' and I loved it. It's a 99c rental on Australian Itunes at the moment. Bargain.

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterEz

Saw Fences. Loved it more than the play (both the original and revival). Figures as large and looming as Denzel and Viola belong on the big screen, making his choice to leave most of the action confined to the Maxson yard a smart move. The family, and by extension the audience, is held captive by Troy's verbosity and bitterness, making the familial tension all the more visceral and, when things finally do boil over, explosive. As much as I adore Moonlight, I would love to see this company of actors take SAG Ensemble. No doubt, August Wilson would be very pleased and proud. 10's across the board!

I watched two films on a long international flight: The Light Between Oceans and The Ardennes.

The Light Between Oceans was acted quite admirably by the three principals: Alicia Vikander, Michael Fassbender & Rachel Weisz. But the direction was almost amateurish -- it seems to want to squeeze as much emotion from the valiant performances of Weisz, Fassbender and Vikander. But some of the shots are wonderful, sometimes breathtaking when you least expect it. The film may have been good if helmed by a more subtle, more experienced, less mawkish filmmaker.

On the other hand, Belgium's Oscar entry The Ardennes is masterfully directed with a surprising ending that was all the more heartbreaking because it was not forced. The story, the acting (lead and supporting), the pacing, the judicious use of physical and discursive violence are all stellar. Mournful, powerfully dynamic when needed, and endlessly watchable, The Ardennes like the social-realist films from Eastern Europe shows a story can be simple but still be compelling to watch if the direction trusts the material and the performances to convey the rarer light of the story.

Saw Jackie last night - beautiful film, though I admit with shame I dozed off during the first half (not a good movie to see after 4 strong drinks). Seeing Rogue One tomorrow afternoon and Elle tomorrow evening. It must be that time of year!

December 17, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterlylee

Saw ROGUE ONE and liked it as well. I loved the ending. And Diego Luna needs to be in more things please.

Already saw LA LA LAND last week, but really really want to see it again. Maybe a matinee tomorrow? Hmm...

December 18, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterRyan T.

I saw "Bride Wars" on cable- a harmless cute movie- interesting to see Chris Pratt playing a rather bland supporting role

December 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjaragon

I saw la la land, rogue one and office Christmas party all very awesome.

December 18, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterjoe

Mareko: Since Rotten Tomatoes has it at 78% on a small sample? Buried because it's really not good. (Again, there's usually 20% score of padding for biopics and The Founder looks set for around 50%.)

About to watch Zsa Zsa Gabor in Touch of Evil again...
R.I.P.
