A "Blade Runner 2049" Teaser is Here!

Denis Villeneive has scored his biggest box office hit with Arrival (it's inching close to $100M) but he could score an even bigger hit next year with Blade Runner 2049. The sequel is bound to spur steady curiosity and shrieks of sacrilege from the original's faithful over the next year, but Villeneuve should be the force that unites both factions. And to ease (or maybe exacerbate) those thoughts, we have our first look at the visuals with the just released teaser! We'll save the full YNMS for a more revealing trailer, but I have some thoughts...
- That's a lot of voiceover for a teensy trailer. Uh oh, did they not learn from the original's struggles?
- Denis Villeneuve and Roger Deakins, reunited and it feels so good.
- Ryan Gosling gives good coat. With all that mood and stoicism, this teaser plays like Only God Forgives but, you know, not terrible.
- We see you on that piano, Ryan. La La Land crossover fanfiction!
- With these mostly dusty hues, it's a relief to know that this might be a decades late sequel that doesn't borrow too much from its original, no?
- Deckard seems to have gone all McMansion while in hiding. Maybe Sean Young is lurking somewhere after all.

Deakins and Villeneuve reuniting being a good thing: I'm not sure I'd agree. My biggest problem with Sicario and Prisoners was that the cinematography was gorgeous but "off" in both cases. In Sicario, shot choices obscured plot turns and, in Prisoners, the muted blue tones of the cinematography (not helping editing that was probably a bit too slow for the content), clashed with the masculinely melodramatic "break things theatre" that the on-screen events implied.
Of course I hope the movie turns out well, but the trailer is inert and boring.
Ellen: This is trying to show off the aesthetic and atmosphere above all else. It's probably not going to be able to touch the best cut of the original (what could?), but I'd say this still has a chance to be a B+/A- movie.

ONLY GOD FORGIVES is not terrible. Kristin Scott Thomas, its cinematography, are not its only redeeming qualities.
Reluctantly, I'm in, although this definitely falls in the category of movies that do not need to exist. At least it looks gorgeous, Ryan Gosling suits its mood, and if that snippet of music is any indicator, they're doing a bang up job channeling Vangelis. (I see the composer is Johann Johansson, who also scored Sicario - my favorite score from last year. Talented guy.)
I actually liked Only God Forgives. I thought it was misunderstood.
As we're on subject, this looks fucking incredible.
My thoughts on this are much like my thoughts on the Han Solo origin film: If they're going to do it, they can at least do it right. Deakin, Jóhannsson, and Villeneuve FAR outweigh my problems with Jared Leto. He'll probably be given an insanely flashy replicant role (Gigolo Joe, anyone?), or else he'll play the son of Tyrell.
Okay. Screw it. So far, so good - I'm there!
How weird is it that the original is set in 2019?
I don't think this needs to be made either, but at least Villeneuve and not Ridley Scott is directing it. The teaser doesn't give the audience much but I do love the snippet of the score.
Ewww, I didn't know Jared Leto was in this. Okay-I'm maybe so. I agree with Lylee-this is a movie that never needed to happen. I liked the mystery around Deckard better when it was left unsolved.
It makes me long for Rutger Hauer.
This kind of story needs some poetry, and a character that is "different" in an eye catching breath taking way.
Someone like Tyrone Singleton of the Birmingham Ballet, or James Thierree, whose years of skill can't be matched by some actor winging it (Jared Leto?). They move differently through space.
adri: Yeah, Jared Leto makes me nervous. Ryan Gosling being named "LAPD Officer K" (what, are Blade Runners kind of like the MiB and only 26 are in commission at once? Are they clones? Replicants? Are we going to get a scene of Gosling being addressed as "The New K"?) also makes me nervous.
