Emmy Noms 2016: Comedy, First Impressions

Related: Drama Nominations
RelatedSnubs & Perplexities

The 68th annual Emmy nominations have been announced. As usual the Academy of Television couldn't bring themselves to switch it up much, only making changes in categories where they were forced to do so (like Comedy Actress).

COMEDY NOMINATIONS

Kimmy Schmidt was nominated again but without two of its funniest players: Anna Camp (Guest) and Jane Krakowski (Supporting)

Outstanding Comedy Series
"Black•ish" (1st nom, 2nd season)
"Master of None" (1st nom, 1st season)
"Modern Family" (7th season, 7th nom - 5 previous wins)
"Silicon Valley" (2nd season, 2nd nom)
"Transparent" (2nd season, 2nd nom)
"Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" (2nd season, 2nd nom)
"Veep" (5th season, 5th nom, 1 previous win)

Similarities to last year:  4/6 With both Louie and Parks & Recreation ineligible this year, Emmy voters were forced to make two changes to their series lineup. That's all they made...

Outstanding Lead Actress in a Comedy Series
Tracee Ellis Ross, "Black•ish" (1st nom, 2nd season)
Julia Louis-Dreyfus, "Veep" (5th nom, 5th season with 4 wins for this character. 15 other noms/2 other wins)
Ellie Kemper, "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" (1st nom, 2nd season)
Laurie Metcalif, "Getting On" (1st nom for this character, 3rd season. 7 other noms /3 other wins)
Amy Schumer, "Inside Amy Schumer" (4th season, 2nd nom)
Lily Tomlin, "Grace & Frankie" (2nd nom/2nd season. 21 nominations/6 wins previously for other stuff)

Similarities to Last Year:
With Falco, Kudrow, and Poehler no longer eligible, Emmy voters were forced to make 3 changes. That's all they made.

Unacceptable
Snubbing Rachel Bloom who has already won the Globe and Critics Choice for her brilliant work on Crazy Ex Girlfriend

Outstanding Lead Actor in a Comedy Series
Anthony Anderson, "Black-ish" (2nd nom, 2nd season)
Aziz Ansari, "Master of None" (1st nom, 1st season)
William H. Macy, "Shameless"
Thomas Middleditch, "Silicon Valley" (1st nom, 2nd season)
Will Forte, "Last Man on Earth" (2nd nom, 2nd season)
Jeffrey Tambor, "Transparent" (2nd nom, 2nd season, 1 win for this category.)

Similarities to Last Season:
4/6 With LeBlanc and Louis CK no longer eligible, voters were forced to make 2 changes.

Outstanding Supporting Actress in a Comedy Series
Anna Chlumsky, "Veep" (4th nom, 5th season)
Gaby Hoffman, "Transparent" (2nd nom, 2nd season)
Allison Janney, "Mom" (3rd nom, 3rd season, 2 wins. 8 noms/5 wins for other things)
Judith Light, "Transparent" (1st nom, 2nd season. 1 previous nomination)
Kate McKinnon, "Saturday Night Live"  (3rd nomination in this category, 4th overall -all for SNL)
Niecy Nash, "Getting On" (2nd nom, 3rd season)

Similarities to Last Year:
5/6 All 8 of last year's nominees were still eligible. There were 8 last year due to a three way tie (one supposes) so we're downn to just six. We lost Julie Bowen for the first time (after 6 noms/ 2 wins), Mayim Bialik (after 4 noms), and Jane Krakowski (nooooo) with Judith Light the only new nominee.

Outstanding Supporting Actor in a Comedy Series
Louie Anderson, "Baskets" (1st season, 1st nomination)
Andre Braugher, "Brooklyn Nine-Nine" (3rd nom for 3rd season. 7 noms/2 wins previously)
Tituss Burgess, "Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt" (2nd nom, 2nd season)
Ty Burrell, "Modern Family" (7th nom for 7 seasons. 2 wins)
Tony Hale, "Veep" (4th nom for 5 seasons. 2 wins for this category)
Keegan-Michael Key, "Key & Peele" (2nd nom, 5th season. previous nominations for writing)
Matt Walsh, "Veep" (1st nom, 5th season)

Similarities to Last Year:
All six nominees were still eligible. Adam Driver on Girls gave way to make room for Matt Walsh from Veep

Outstanding Guest Actor in a Comedy Series
Tracy Morgan, "Saturday Night Live" (2nd nomination)
Larry David, "Saturday Night Live" (25th nomination. 2 previous wins - multiple categories)
Bob Newhart, "The Big Bang Theory" (9th nomination. 1 previous win for this character)
Bradley Whitford, "Transparent" (5th nomination. 2 previous wins including one last year for this character)
Martin Mull, "Veep" (1st nomination!)
Peter MacNicol, "Veep (4th nomination. 1 previous win)

Similarities to Previous Years: Bradley Whitford gets a second consecutive nomination for his Transparent character. And Bob Newhart a 3rd nomination for the Big Bang Theory character for which he's already won once. The big surprise is Martin Mull who has never been nominated despite a long rich history on TV stretching all the way back to Mary Hartman, Mary Hartman in 1976.

Outstanding Guest Actress in a Comedy Series
Tina Fey & Amy Poehler, "Saturday Night Live"
Amy Schumer, "Saturday Night Live"
Melissa McCarthy, "Saturday Night Live"
Christine Baranski, "The Big Bang Theory" (14 noms, 1 win overall)
Laurie Metcalf, "The Big Bang Theory"
Melora Hardin, "Transparent" (1st nomination!)

Similarities to Previous Year: Tina Fey and Christine Baranski were both nominated in this category last year, Fey in a different show though. Baranski has been up for her Big Bang Theory character 3 previous times.

Outstanding Writing for a Comedy Series
"Catastrophe" - Episode 1 (Rob Delaney & Sharon Horgan)
"Master of None" - "Parents" (Aziz Ansari & Alan Yang)
"Silicon Valley" - "Founder Friendly" (Dan O'Keefe)
"Silicon Valley" - "The Uptick" (Alec Berg)
"Veep" - "The Morning After" (David Mandel)
"Veep" - "Mother" (Alex Gregory & Peter Huyck)

Similarities to Last Year: Veep and Silicon Valley are the only returning consecutive nominees this time.

Outstanding Directing for a Comedy Series
"Master of None" -- "Parents" (Aziz Ansari)
"Silicon Valley" -- "Founder Friendly" (Mike Judge)
"Silicon Valley" -- "Daily Active Users" (Alec Berg)
"Transparent" -- "Man on the Land" (Jill Soloway)
"Veep" - "Mother" (Dale Stern)
"Veep" -- "Morning After" (Chris Addison)
"Veep" -- "Kissing Your Sister" (Dave Mandel)

Mike Judge & Jill Soloway were both nominated last year also.

Other Stuff:
The Variety and Reality categories aren't really worth sharing (since they are even slower to change than drama categories) other than to say:

RUPAUL was finally nominated for hosting RuPaul's Drag Race!

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterBD

Who cares, The Americans finally got some major nominations! I can't believe it!

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Those SNL host noms are a total snooze; what a lazy way to fill out guest categories.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDave S.

Late Night with Samantha Bee got a nod for writing but not for the show itself. Nonsense.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAustin

Just noticed Kirsten Dunst and Jean Smart were nominated for Fargo!

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Agree with Dave S. Out of all the comedy shows, half of the best acting comes from SNL?!

Gutted for Krakowski. She was better in season 2 than the first.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMikey C

CONSTANCE ZIMMER... UNREAL :-) WOO HOOO

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterKleghorne

Nothing is more depressing than seeing Aziz Ansari, 1st nomination, after 7 seasons of Tom Haverford.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterSawyer

You left off my favorite nomination: Louis Anderson for Baskets (Best Supporting Actor in a Comedy)

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterLiz S.

Don't really watch much comedy .. so not qualified to react.... but they seem pretty much the same.....sort of bogged down!!!!!

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrick

Limited series was excellent....

NOT Cuba Gooding, Jr. especially in Leading... although it was about him , the role was supporting!!! He was ridiculous in his emoting!

VERY sad that Connor Jessup in Amercian Crime and Freddie Highmore in Bates Motel were overlooked .. they were better than any of the nominees in their categories!! Oh well!

Glad for Fargo ... hate the idea of American Horror Story ... it was dreadful this year and the acting was dismal ... glad Lady Gaga was not nominated..

Love that Huffington,Paulson and Dunst and Taylor were all nominated ... It has to be a 4 way tie here... they were all GREAT!

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered Commenterrick

rick-

I'm also glad Lady Gaga was not nominated for Hotel. If anything the guy who played Liz Taylor shoulda been nominated he was amazing in that role.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

Sorry, Tracee Ellis Ross, Laurie Metcalfe, and Ellie Kemper are much more interesting in their roles than Rachel Bloom, who I just dont understand. That show she's on is a mess. Emmy made the right call.

I actually think the noms this year are surprisingly acceptable, esp the recognition for The Americans, which shocked me. It's about. Damn. Time! Some eye-rolls like *Maggie Smith* (again?) and no Krakowski (sad, she was even better this year) but overall a solid line up.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterAaron

Tracee Ellis Ross is the reason Black-ish works. Good for her getting a nom.

Thank you sweet baby Jesus that The Americans FINALLY got nominated for major awards. It is the best show on tv (IMHO). Although leaving out Frank Langella for his Gabriel is just criminal. He really plays well off Russell and Rhys.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

Also, how does Project Runway continue to be nominated? Who is still watching that show?

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCharlieG

Good of Laurie Metcalf... 3 nominations!!

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCarlos

I mourn for Denis O'Hare's Liz Taylor.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterMorgan

Tracee. Ellis. Ross. I'd have given her a nomination for her work last season, so I'm glad the Academy caught on this year.

And how is it that this is Martin Mull's first nomination? That is unacceptable.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

I'm happy for the girls of Getting On. That's all I got.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

That SNL and Big Bang Theory can just get those Guest Actress Emmy nominations while Kimmy Schmidt's women are just left out to dry is so sad. Amy Sedaris and Anna Camp were funnier than they've ever been, and Kudrow had such a touching episode! How'd they all miss? Krakowski's Emmy-less shelf is such a drag; Years of killing it on two shows and nothing. I'm glad the category's getting shaken up a little, someone had to miss, I just wish it wasn't her.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterNick T

Brad Whitford plays a completely different character (different country, different era) in this season of Transparent, but he barely registered, so I don't get that nomination.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

I know I can't expect much out of The Emmys, and my wish of Tracee Ellis Ross being nominated happened, so I literally can't complain about anything.

And then on top of that, Rupaul was finally nominated. I. just. I can't process it. Even if it took way too long and even if he's never nominated again, at the VERY least, he was nominated once as best reality competition host for DRAG RACE. Ahhh.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

I am AGHAST that Jane Krakowski is not nominated!
Jane Fonda should have been nommed too.
JLD FTW!
Face it people. With the abundance of Veep's nom, I believe it will win Comedy Series again. YAY! Matt Walsh's first nom and also Peter MacNicol hilarious performance. I hope Anna Chlumsky wins too.
Tituss you got this baby.
Christine Baranski HAD BETTER WIN Guest Comedy Actress considering her petrifying snub in Drama Supporting Actress.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

how could they leave out Gillian Jacobs for LOVE?! - loved her performance!
Loved the show, too, it should've been nominated.

Master Of None deserves any and all accolades it has received and will continue to receive - brilliant show.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterUlrich

I guess Maisie Williams got nominated to compensate one of the most soporific storylines of the entire series .All the Game of Thrones acting nominations are a joke except for Lena.

July 14, 2016 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

Expanding the nominees has actually improved the overall list in the last few years. You're acting like there's an overwhelming amount of shows and performances that were left off by the Emmy's repetitive voting patterns. Not really, especially this year...
