Off Cinema
Time Out lists the 25 best Broadway cast recordings of the new century. I definitely don't love the whole list (the high placement for The Full Monty is rather baffling) but there are many gems here. The two albums I've listened to the most from this list are Wild Party (love this write up) and The Light in the Piazza (utterly sublime -it would've been my #1)

I'm happy that Bridges of Madison County even made TimeOut's list because that score is soooo under-appreciated. I know because I discovered it by accident and hated myself for not making it out to see the show.

Honestly I wouldn't be mad if Steven Pasquale and his surprisingly sexy ass voice and Kelli O'Hara signed up for the Moulin Rouge musical.

Thrilled for Viola and Steve McQueen. Can't wait to see the other actresses they cast in this intriguing picture.

BUMMED for Liev and Naomi. Goddamn they were my favorite celeb couple! WTF?!

If I had made a list for favorite cast recordings of the the new century Next To Normal and Spring Awakening would have my top two slots. I would have an internal battle placing the rest. I know comedy musicals would be at a disadvantage because I lose interest while listening to them even though seeing them live I enjoy. For instance, I really liked seeing A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder, but that cast recording wouldn't make my top 25 not would The Producers or The Drowsy Chaperone. I loved Beautiful and Jersey Boys, but those cast recordings also don't make it even though the songs are beautifully done.

A thriller directed by Steve McQueen and starring Viola Davis? Welcome to The Film Experience's most anticipated movie of 2017!!!!

Widows (the 80s, 2 series) and She's Out (90s sequel) are worth a watch if people have access?

I'm assuming that Davis will be the central matriarch, so all 3 other actresses will probably be in their late 20s-early 40s... here's hoping that Lupita joins the cast too...

I'm super excited to see who the other black and latina actress is... hmm maybe Melonie Diaz or Gina Rodriguez for the latina?

Off Broadway shows that you should listen to from the 21st century.

The Adding Machine
Bloody Bloody Andrew Jackson
Dogfight
The Fortress of Solitude
Giant
Here Lies Love
Murder Ballad
Natasha, Pierre and the Great Comet of 1812 (coming to Broadway this season)
Nevermore
Yank!

Also, the exclusion of Fela! is ridiculous.

The thought of Viola Davis starring in a movie from Steve McQueen and Gillian Flynn is almost too good to be true. So excited!

Arkaan - AGREED on the exclusion of Fela, especially since Beautiful and Jersey Boys made the list. I'm also kind of outraged at the lack of Once, which is almost impossibly gorgeous (the choral arrangement of Gold takes my breath away every time).

I would add Dear Evan Hansen (also coming to Broadway shortly) to your list of great Off Broadway shows to listen to.

A) I think Full Monty is a brilliantly inspired score, and rightfully deserves its spot.
B) Wicked is the score that doesn't deserve to be here.
C) it doesn't matter anyway, because my favorite unsung musical of all time, Caroline, or Change, is #2!!! The author can think outside the box! 👍🏼

An unrelated piece of news got me excited. Mrs Brown recounted Queen Victoria's late-in-life relationship with servant John Brown. There were rumors of a romantic involvement and even a secret marriage. Judi Dench and Billy Connoly starred in the film.

But, later on, Victoria enganged in an equally criticized and scrutinized relationship with advisor and secreatry Abdul Karim, a Muslim Indian. Stephen Frears is making a film based on this story with -who else- Judi Dench again playing Victoria and Ali Fazal interpreting Karim. The film will be called Victoria and Abdul.

Will it be deemed a mere rehash of the previous film? We don't know, but Dench is assured of Oscar consideration. I look forward to it.

Hey! You missed a huge story. Now actors can ask IMDB to hide their dates of birth. Crazy, right?

@denny

Unfortunately, I haven't heard either Once or Dear Evan Hansen. I hated the movie of the former (seriously, loathed it) and didn't bother. I can't wait to hear the latter, though.

@ Peggy Sue

More precisely: starting 1/1/17, any subscriber (i.e., actor, writer, director, cinematographer, singer, dancer etc. who pays) to IMDb Pro can request removal of DOB from his/her page, if the new bill isn't struck down on appeal.

I am super excited for Widows now that Viola Davis is starring. I'm loving this exciting new chapter in her career. As for the remaining Widows, I'd probably cast Adepero Oduye, Rosamund Pike (For a Gone Girl reunion since Gillian Flynn is penning the script), and America Ferrera.
