Cinema Audio Society Nominees

The Cinema Audio Society have announced their nominations for their 53rd annual awards. Though they can help us see what's on the mind an in the ears of sound professionals, they don't necessarily tell us what's coming down the Oscar pike in Oscar's two Sound categories...

The CAS generally predicts 4 of the 5 Oscar nominees for Sound Mixing (the question is which 4) but they don't help us know about Sound Editing and the winner for Mixing is not necessarily a given with Oscar. For example Max Max took the Oscar last year after The Revenant won the CAS. The year before that Whiplash missed the CAS list altogether but went on to win the actual Oscar after blocking a nomination for CAS preferred Guardians of the Galaxy. In 2012 while they agreed on the winner (Les Miserables) they were more divided on nominees with only a 3/5 match.

One curious trend: In the Aughts it was not uncommon for the Oscars to nominate animated features for Sound Mixing but Oscar's sound branch have been resistant this decade. The CAS has a separate animated category but no animated feature has been Oscar nominated for Sound Mixing since WALL•E (2008).

Congratulations to the nominees (after the jump) but know that none of them are fully "safe" for Oscar until the nominations are read on the 24th...

Still surprised that Silence isn't catching on with the guilds. I'm still predicting it in multiple tech categories but only because the AMPAS default love for Scorsese is strong.

So boring. "Rogue One" brings nothing new to the table as far as sound work goes for a "Star Wars" movie. "La La Land" has some weird mixing going on with the vocals in many numbers. I would like to see more innovative choices. "American Honey" would be my pick.

I found the lyrics really hard to understand in "La La Land", especially in that first song on the freeway.

Granted, we saw it in a non - IMAX / DTS theater, but a "normal" one, so that could be it, too.

forever -- i had the same trouble with La La Land's first number. at first i thought it was the theater i saw it in (princess of wales in Toronto has TERRIBLE acoustics for movies) but after two more viewings... nope, it's just the sound mixing. But that won't stop a nomination. once people like something, they just like it :) see also complaints about hard to understand dialogue in INCEPTION.

"La La Land" seems to be the favorite child of award season

I had the sound issues, too, and got a lot of feedback on Twitter about it. It's like what Nat said in the podcast, the LA LA LAND sound issues has become a topic to discuss, but that won't stop it from winning. They love musicals (even ones like Whiplash) in the sound mixing category.

It's the Millennium boxing match or an abomination that spins in a cross code, but what we can say with certainty, in the end, is that it's happening. Once retired all-time great McGregor vs Mayweather Live boxer will take UFC star in Las Vegas.
There has been what it feels like years of speculation about the McGregor vs Mayweather Fight, with so many name calling on both sides. But the two fighters have announced that it is in fact, in.
Yes, that's right, a boxer with a 49-0 record against a man who has never taken part in a professional boxing matchup.
Anyway, here you have everything you need to know about the McGregor vs Mayweather
fight.
