Huppert is probably too gracious to provide her with some sources to enrich her political education, but goodness knows she needs it.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Boy, Huppert has a lot of fans. And deservedly so. Could she be a threat for the win?

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNnnnvg

Yeah.... still doesn't make up for Trump.. (or, while we're at it, Grace of Monaco)... (or, for that matter, 90% of her career output this decade)...

And really, how else ought one behave around La Reine Isabelle? This gesture should be like the basic minimum courtesy.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commentergoran

"It's quite intense the first time, so I've been told." - Huppert

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTyler

She truly is "The Queen" isn't she? I can't think of another actress who has pushed so ferociously against the boundaries of "acting", "good taste" and "femininity", almost never appearing in the mainstream yet still being 100% a star to any cinephile.

Maybe Glenda Jackson, maybe Tilda Swinton, definitely Isabelle Huppert!

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

While I wish she would show more resistance towards the new President, people were too harsh on her, in response to her Trump comment. She only echoed sentiments already stated by Obama and Clinton. Also, she supported the Women March the other day and she has previously supported several democratic candidates.

Don't get me started.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAdam

Gee. For what it's worth, Kidman doesn't support Trump. She said that people should just get over the election now that he is unfortunately the president. This whole conundrum has the same vibe as Charlotte Rampling's comment on Oscars so white issue just last year. Blown out of proportion.

LONG MAY THE QUEEN ISABELLE REIGN! LOL yeah Huppert FTW at the Oscars!

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

I wonder if she saw Huppert in The Maids with Blanchett...

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

@Craver - I'm not sure that you can compare Kidman and Rampling's comments...

Kidman's was an attempt to be entirely without politics (though the timing/publishing of her comments made them a hugely political statement and inferred that she was a "secret" Republican, too scared to be forthright)

Rampling's was a misguided attempt to tackle a subject she didn't seem to have considered too much - it was entirely political and betrayed that she had fewer problems with a system that favoured white actors than she did with a potential system that favoured black actors. The scary part is that you'd have to dig deep to find any of her contemporaries that spoke freely in opposition to her views...

Both are amongst my favourite actors of all time and both have been involved in work that has affected and altered my own view of the world (for the better) on multiple occasions. So I don't tend to think too much about their private views of the world!!!

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

Rampling argued for reverse racism. I know she's inherently a prickly person who wanted the conversation to be about her first nomination, the role, and her career, but her attitude totally soured me on her.

@Craver

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

Kidman identifies as a religious person which is automatically linked to "not as bright as required"
Another reason why Streep and Blanchett are always slightly preferred by those who can think.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

@3rtful - I agree 100%

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

Kidman cares about the medium as an art form. Streep cares about herself. Hence working primarily with journeymen directors who dare not question her choices. And a system too invested in her myth to start snubbing her so late in the game.

@Yavor

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commenter/3rtful

@3rtful - I don't agree with the latter statement at all.

There are a million reasons why Kidman may choose the films she acts in (as an alternative viewpoint, look back at Samantha Morton's comments on her which are harsh but could just as easily be true)

There are also a million reasons why Streep may end up in middle-of-the-road movies - Judi Dench, Maggie Smith and Helen Mirren (as examples) are all actresses who have also enjoyed long careers and contributed much to "the medium as an art form". Where are THEIR collaborations with Lars Von Trier, Pedro Almodovar, Jonathan Glazer, and Wong Kar Wai (for example)? Maybe it's that no matter where you work in the world, the career options for actresses over 60 are severely limited, particularly leading roles. If it's middle-of-the-road dross that allows you to keep working on your craft, it's middle-of-the-road dross that you make. To paraphrase Imelda Staunton, there's no point doing amazing acting if no one can (or will be able to) see you doing it. Cut Streep a bit of slack!

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterkermit_the_frog

I love how Nicole is a low-key cinema NERD.

Also that earring/bracelet combo is everything.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDerreck.

To /3rtful. You could not be more wrong about Kidman and Strrep. If ßnything it is just the reverse. I have been reading this site for a few months now. And I am beginning to dislike you. Superior attitude!!

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMax

Nicole is friends with Rupert Murdoch. She bearded for Tom Cruise. Her politics are ill informed at best.

Only Helen Sharp would use a picture of two other actresses to attack her unrelenting obsession, Meryl Streep. Sad.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSebastian Stan

This is an omen, you know, to be kissed by a Trump normalizer. Congrats, Emma!

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTruth

I am having an Actressexuel wet dream!

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterstjeans

I think the handling of kidman's comments was extremely unfair. It was 100% a call for unity and was filmed right after elections when everyone was depressed. Frankly i was saying the same thing at the time because it seemed people were frozen in depression. The timing of the comment and the right handling of it just blew it way out of proportion. At worst she was very naive. I looked back at Norton's comments and i m incredibly disappointed. She sounds very bitter. I don't appreciate actors taking unnecessary public jabs at other actors. It reminds me of when Tarantino took a jab at Blanchett. So petty. To be fair and despite Norton being a fantastic actress, she doesn't hold a candle to Nicole Kidman who has been in the business since she was 14. People like their movie stars huggable and non complicated and she is one of the most complicated ones we have.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTony T

OKay, I adore Rampling's work and dislike most of Kidman's. But Rampling's statement was way way waaay more offensive/ignorant/dangerous than Kidman's. No need to compare them.

Meantime though:

@Yavor
'Kidman identifies as a religious person which is automatically linked to "not as bright as required"
Another reason why Streep and Blanchett are always slightly preferred by those who can think.'

Could not agree more.

And Huppert towers above them all.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commentergoran

People threw this out of proportion, this is why we can't have nice things. The photo is better than a dream, btw; everything, loved it.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterLuiserghio

Can we just appreciate how a divine a moment this is. That someone as gifted and revered (by some) as Kidman would show this kind of reverence for another artist FINALLY enjoying a moment of having her work widely praised and recognized is just lovely to see.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVal

I thought we were all here coswe like Actresses not slinging slurs.

Streep,Kidman,Moore,Williams,Bullock,Winslet etc all have detractors and fans,I just don't care what they think or feel politically.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMARKGORDONUK

Oh for god's sake - the woman said support democracy (exactly what Hilary and Barack have said) and we're going to shame her and treat her like shit for all the years we have loved her?

Shame on all of you here -

What I love most about this photo is it highlights what an actual film geek Nicole is - she knows the legend of Huppert and is bowing to her out of respect and adoration for her work. I love what a geek she is.

Historians will one day look back and wonder why Nicole Kidman wasn't more appreciated while she was around - mark my words.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermorganb

val - yes

yavor -- it's deeply offensive to suggest that if people like one actress (Streep) over another (Kidman) it means they are smarter. It just means they are closer to having your opinion.

derreck -- yes. glad someone else noticed the accessories

morgan-- this is 100% true. co-sign everything you just wrote. I have been annoyed by tons of democrats saying "give trump a chance" but enough of them said it that I realized it's just knee-jerk optimism. It's starting to fade now as people realize how quickly we'll lose our democracy to an kleptocrat and racist... but whatever.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

@morganb

I'm happy to organise a triple bill of "Grace of Monaco", "Before I Go to Sleep" and "Australia" to demystify future historians.

Every time she sings in "Moulin Rouge" can be the interludes. (And people complain about Emma Stone's vocals?!)

Oh and the woman said let's not stand in the president-elect's way as he was appointing corrupt/patently unqualified people to the ministry, behaving like a lunatic, dodging multiple well-founded accusations of corruption and spinning unprecedentedly dangerous lies, among - you know - other things. Saying we need to support him in this context, as an indescribably wealthy, over-privileged person divorced from the urgent threat his presidency represents to the majority of people? Yeah, no. I don't care if she's Maria Falconetti reborn. She doesn't get a pass.

I have no trouble separating her unintelligent political statements from the value of her best work (Birth, Dogville, Margot etc - even if I wish Julianne Moore was playing every single one of those roles). But she as a celebrity and as a person? Inspires even less respect than she used to.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commentergoran

I can't believe this needs to be said, but apparently it does.

President Obama is the 44th President of the United States. He has an official duty to ensure a peaceful transition of power and uphold the norms the country. Just because his successor has given up all pretense of propriety doesn't mean he should.

Nicole Kidman is an actress. She is free to behave however she pleases - in fact, she has stated that she is "nonpolitical," so one wonders why she commented at all on Donald Trump. Her behavior is not at all comparable to President Obama's behavior, and President Obama's behavior in an official capacity does not justify her actions.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSuzanne

Take a seat, Nathaniel.

Whoever identifies as religious and believes in god/s and in Kidman's case goes to church to glorify the god she's been bashed into just isn't as bright as required.

Believing in a god doesn't make you a bad actress. Just a person of limited intelligence about something as fundamental as nature.

An omniscient, omnipotent, self-created creature has a plan for us? Are you kidding me? It sort of decided not to have a plan for the dinosaurs and just kill them all?

I do acknowledge the probability that we might be a mere experiment of a vastly superior intelligence. But that superior intelligence is not self-created, the way we're not self-created in relation to the cells we experiment with in the lab. Notice the resemblance. These cells have no idea we're watching them and tinkering with them + we're aware of the fact that we're not gods to them, simply far more superior.

I love Kidman. Religion/god/gods, I do not.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterYavor

The guy in the background doesn't appreciate the gravity of the situation at all!

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterEz

The onlooker wants some of that A-grade coke that Nicole is sniffing out of Isabelle's vial!

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTammy Cruise

Isn't any celebrity being asked the Trump question anyway? It's like the feminist question - you can't win.

I liked Before I go to Sleep and Australia... :P

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermorganb

@Morgan I liked those, too! Thanks for being a voice of sanity/reason in this thread. Nicole Kidman is probably my favorite working actress and I was really disappointed by her comments, but I agree they're being blown way out of proportion here. And there is no way they compare to what Rampling said last year.

Anyway, I love the photo and would really love to see the two of them working together one day.

@Yavor you need to chill.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterthefilmjunkie

Thanks @thefilmjunkie.

We all need to chill - I can't believe the day has come when Nicole Kidman is the new punching bag on this site - but hey, that's 2017 for you!

There's enough hate and fear in this world at the moment, let's come together here to celebrate fabulous women, great cinema, awards and French legends and lift each other up in the comments, that's all. meryl.gif :D

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermorganb

"I do acknowledge the probability that we might be a mere experiment of a vastly superior intelligence.' LOL

That remark made my day.

January 25, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJude

I want to have on this whole subject ...The pic is ridiculous, but the comments??

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMax

gag not "have"

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMax

It's really too bad Nicole asked everyone to get behind Trump, since he is turning out even worse than expected. Isabelle is wondering why on earth is this woman acting strangely and erratically in front of a bunch of photographers.

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClaire

Oh gad, how many assholes can I count in this thread? I am beside myself reading some of these comments. Didn't know some of you could be so hateful, except for Yavor, who like a rabid dog accepts whatever opportunity he can to bite into Nathaniel.

Not that I or anybody need to prove anyone how intelligent, compassionate and sensible Nicole Kidman is, but for those of you talking out of your arses, I dare you to watch this interview: Nicole Kidman on Trump

Grow some heart people. These times are troubled enough.

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJones

....what do Kidmans comments have to do with this awesome picture? Some people need to grow up.

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRM

I don't like what she said at all, but the people that having been bringing it up on every post remotely related to Kidman just seem like they want an excuse to bash her.

Also, leave it to gay men to reinforce misogyny and sexism without even realizing it...I mean, the amount of demeaning on women and pitting women against others even when the women in conversation have nothing to do with the actual post (like Meryl Streep)--in a post that is about celebrating two incredible actresses who are not doing anything of the negative things going on in this thread. Instead, they're appreciating each other, respecting each other, supporting each other. People on this site, and other well-meaning areas of the internet, think they're so much better than, say, youtube comments, or comments on a political article, but I wouldn't say so at all. It's almost more offensive when people with brains, people who love art do shit like this. Just please stop pitting women against each other; it's so unnecessary.

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPhilip H.

Actresses coming out and openly stanning for Isabelle Huppert has always been one of my fav on-going narratives. Blanchett, Chastain, etc.

As for the T*ump comments re: Kidman - normalizing was her angle there and it didn't work. She's trying to be as polite as possible but he's not "just another president" we have to respect, that's the point.

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMark The First

Who has that glorious picture of Nicole, Meryl and Cate having dinner after the oscars that one year. I bet they couldn't care less what most posters on this thread think of them. And i bet you they'll be just fine with you not watching their movies

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTony T

Please, team up these two Oscar nominees with Jessica Chastain as sisters in a movie now.
