Gird Your Loins for a "Devil Wears Prada" Musical

Chris here, with exciting Broadway adaptation news. Yes, we've maybe begun to move past eyerolling whenever our favorite movies are cashgrabbed into a stage musical and are occassionally excited about some prospects. The Devil Wears Prada seems like a more natural fit for Broadway (and long rumored). It also just landed some quite credible talent: composer Elton John and scribe Paul Rudnick.

If you're worried about an instant classic like Prada being bastardized, look no further than how Elton John turned Billy Elliot into both a financial and creative success on the stage. Paul Rudnick has given us such gay classics as Jeffrey, Addams Family Values, and In & Out, so don't expect the hilarity to be diminished either. While there is not an arrival date yet, the announcement of their involvement is all we need to confirm that this adaptation is really happening and will be a gay old time.

Get ready for lots of speculation on who will step into Meryl Streep's Priestley shoes, though we imagine it is too early to speculate on casting (or how Tony-ready Emily Blunt and Stanley Tucci's former roles will be). It is however fun to fantasize about how Elton will musicalize the pages of Runway magazine. I personally can't wait for numbers like "That's All", "The Cube of Cheese Diet", and "(My Esteemed Colleague) Jacqueline Follet".

What Prada moment are you most excited to see musicalized?

There's gonna be a number entitled "That's All." That much I can guarantee you.

The inevitable song titled Cerulean has to be a powerhouse song that is both funny to the audience but not to the characters, and very intimidating to anyone in the theater. I hope they can do a song that merits it justice, and that they get an actress who can sing/deliver it in just the right way. The other killer song would be Divorce.

An Emily song titled You Eat Carbs and another inevitable song called Divorce will also have to manage the similar tricky tone of being funny while still making you feel slightly sorry for a character who had been nasty and will continue to be nasty, but shown to be human just in that moment.

Purely selfish thinking, but an Andy song titled My Boyfriend's a Bit of a Dick would be great,

i hope miranda has the eleven o'clock number: "my biggest disappointment"

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterpar

"From a Pile of Stuff" with hundreds of cerulean belts waving everywhere across the stage.

January 26, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJust Jack

I actually think this is a great idea. "Everybody Wants To Be Us!" is perfect for a musical number.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJono

Not surprised that "cerulean" has already appeared in 2 comments. I read the headline and immediately thought of the Galaxy Glue jingle from The Incredible Shrinking Woman:

Cerulean blue
Cerulean blue
What would we do without cerulean blue?

It's not like Elton John has never repurposed a song before.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterBrevity

There is only Patti LuPone.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterAlex

"you're in desperate need of Chanel" by Andrew Rannels, with the Vogue vault exploding into a spinning room with the walls unfolding into mirrors, and model versions of Andy wearing haute couture

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClaire

If Lauren Bacall could play the Bette Davis role in the musical version of All About Eve, surely Glenn Close could play Miranda on Broadway. (Although I really don't know why they don't just cast most of the original ensemble.)

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

No way can Glenn Close do this. She just doesn't know how to pull off a role like that. She'll turn Miranda into Cruela Devil.

MERYL, DO THAT AND WIN THAT DAMN TONY!

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRoss

Ross -- Sure, sure... 8 shows a week. Don't hold your breath.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

1st choice, Streep reprising....2nd choice............TILDA Swinston!!!

I wld luv to see Tucci's"R we doing a before & after I wasn't told of" into a snarky number!! Lol

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterClaran

Donna Murphy is the right answer, you guys.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPeggy Sue

I'm excited for the musical numbers that'll be sung by Emily. She was my favorite character in the entire movie.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMatt St. Clair

I'm not excited about this in the least, but if it must happen, then -- by golly -- I hope they completely omit Andy's useless circle of friends.

And a big NO to Lupone, though I love the idea of Donna Murphy.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterTroy H.

I would like to see Edie Falco as Miranda.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJon

I'm impressed by the songwriting talents of readers of TFE. I would love to see Meryl do it and get her long awaited Tony. Likewise, I only want to see Emily Blunt be the perfect assistant.
I really hope this happens and I hope it's huge hit.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterLadyEdith

SHARON STONE!

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDAVID

I don't understand the calls for LuPone. LuPone is big, brassy and earthy. Miranda Priestly is exactly zero of those things.

They'd never go for it, but I'd love to see Audra McDonald give the role a shot. Certainly her trophy case can match Streep's!

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJohn

Call me crazy, but I'd love to see Christina Hendricks as Miranda. She was in that concert version of Company and was just fine. Maybe not the greatest singer, but the acting would be stellar. Sassy, petulant and chic. She'd kill in this role.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

Meryl can sing, maybe they'll get her to reprise the role for a short engagement ?

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRami

Can we have Marion Cotillard as Jacqueline? She's a very gifted singer, has already toured with a band singing live.

Nigel- Robert Downey Jr? He sings quite well.

Andrea - Anna Kendrick, obviously

Emily - Morgan James

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered Commentercal roth

I think this is a terrible idea in general (since the film is perfect as is), but in addition I REALLY don't think Elton John is the right person to do the music for it. But then, I kind of HATED the musical of Billy Elliott, so that may be coloring my reaction a bit.

That said, Donna Murphy for Miranda, please!

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDancin' Dan

omg Chris. THIS

"(My Esteemed Colleague) Jacqueline Follet".
That's exactly what it would be called in musical theater. haha

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Dancin Dan -- absolutely agree that Elton John feels all wrong for this. I like him as a musician but the type of music he writes for musical theater would actually not sell this type of sharp comedy.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterNATHANIEL R

The original cast is already perfect and they are all well suited for Broadway, so why change? Meryl Streep IS Miranda Priestly. No substitute.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPam

Meryl movies being made into musicals... Bridges and now Prada.. what's next? Sophie's Choice?

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterJamie

Is it too much to ask CHRISTINE BARANSKI to star in this?!!
I need a bitchy diva song a la "Miss Baltimore Crabs" lol totally for the "That's All" scene
Nina Arianda as Andy maybe?

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterCraver

Lansbury or Stritch would have killed in this back in the day...with a Sondheim score...

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterPaul Outlaw

"Am I reaching for the stars here? Not really," Miss Streep sang, as coats and assistants fllew all over the stage

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterGus Kenworthy

The thing about casting Miranda Priestley is that she isn't a character that naturally lends itself to song. What will her songs even BE? Like stylistically.

And I know the impulse is to put a HUGE stage star in the role, but all of the obvious ones are just flat wrong for the part.

January 27, 2017 | Registered CommenterChris Feil

You know, "Me" from "Death Becomes Her" might still fit in here....

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered Commenterforever1267

She can do 8 shows a week. They can open the show quite late, somewhere in April. She'll do 8 shows a week in May and the first week of June, then win the Tony, and she can announce leaving the show right away. She can do 8 shows for a month/month and a half. She most certainly has in her youth.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRoss

I feel sorry for original writers, let's remake all of Hollywood.

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered Commentermarkgordon

The movie is MUCH different than the novel.
Miranda and Nigel esp. are simply awful characters in the novel. They were a true relevation in the movie, I'll always thank Meryl and Stanley forever for that!

January 27, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterSonja

"that place I went to with Massimo"

January 28, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterMuniel

"Did she say what kind of skirts?"
"Do I smell freeeeeeeee-sias?"
"There's like 8 dollars of Jarlsberg in there!"

The possibilities are endless!

January 28, 2017 | Unregistered Commentertanpoffel

1) Elton John will keep this from being any better than mediocre.

2) Yes to Donna Murphy or Christine Baranski!

January 28, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterRichard

Chris

And I know the impulse is to put a HUGE stage star in the role, but all of the obvious ones are just flat wrong for the part.
agreed with this although Donna Murphy might work. I think they'd be smarter to go with someone who always delivers that isn't quite as huge. I think Jan Maxwell, who is just great in musical comedies, would probably ace it.

January 28, 2017 | Registered CommenterNATHANIEL R

Nathaniel - Ooh Jan Maxwell YES. I'd put money on a Bebe Neuwirth or Judith Light.

January 28, 2017 | Registered CommenterChris Feil

Christine Baranski is a great idea (plus she's a close friend of Meryl's)...but it's only fitting that Bernadette Peters should play the part of Miranda since Meryl played Bernadette's role in the Into the Woods movie. I say justice and payback for Bernadette!
