Screen Actors Guild Nominations 2017

Another day, another set of honors to parse. The nominations were announced by Olivia Munn and Niecy Nash this morning. Three Billboards Outside Ebbing Missouri and Big Little Lies led the honors with 4 nominations each. Generally speaking the SAG lineups indicate you have a great shot at also becoming an Oscar nominee, if not a locked shot, so the nominees this morning have a lot to be excited about. SAGs nominations for TV are less relevant in terms of awards prospects since they don't divvy up the categories in quite the same way as the Emmys, nor is their timetable the same.

Time to rethink the Best Actor predictions though I firmly do not believe or expect that this exact lineup will transfer to Oscar. Waiting in the wings to surprise on nomination morning? I still believe either Tom Hanks in The Post or Jake Gyllenhaal in Stronger could knock one of these men out.

In something of a shocker given Streep's usual ease at winning nomination she's absent from Best Actress here (and SAG definitely saw The Post. The movie was carting out the big names for those screenings). As we've long suspected Judi Dench is still a formidable threat for an Oscar nod for reprising a role that many thought she might win for the first time (Her Majesty Mrs Brown in 1997). Will the two default contenders cancel each other out? And if so does a feisty dark horse like Annette Bening or Jessica Chastain slip in. Or will Dench and Streep both make it displaying one of the other four here? SOUND OFF.

In perhaps the most surprising category, it was Three Billboards and not Call Me By Your Name that scored a double Supporting Actor nod. Carell's Battle of the Sexes part is the real surprise here but it is comic and scenery chewing and SAG likes that even more than Oscar does. Since this list is markedly different than the Globes what happens with Oscar? We'll have to update all these charts.

Hong Chau has come up from behind in the precursors despite apparently dwindling support for her film. That's quite a feat for a non-celebrity actor. She's terrific in Downsizing so it's a fun turn of events. But it apparently came at the expense of Tiffany Haddish for Girl's Trip who also missed the Globe nomination or Octavia Spencer who missed here for The Shape of Water but was Globe nominated. If they both show up on Oscar nomination morning one of the usual suspects will have to fall away. Supporting Actress is getting crazy crowded, isn't it!?

The shocker is the lack of a nod for The Post (though I'm personally okay with it since it's not a particularly ravishing display of ensemble potency -- the way say Get Out or Lady Bird are here -- but rather just a huge collection of stars doing good work together. That said, SAG usually cares more about those "big collection of stars" movies and considers those "Outstanding Performances by a Cast" so it is perplexing. What happened?

YES. at this GLOW nomination for Maron. He's superb on that show but I figured it would be too muted a form of comedy for awards.

Seriously what is with their Uzo Aduba obsession? She's in one of the richest casts TV has ever assembled and she's the only one from it that's ever so honored despite not even being the best performance on the show. Justice for Danielle Brooks who has been running circles around Aduba for at least a couple of the show's seasons.

Carrell as supporting? Um, no. That is crazy. Especially considering the competition in that category. Really, really hope this doesn't influence Oscar voters.
And I've also been wondering why Hedges hasn't been singled out more for Lady Bird, but I guess that category is already stacked?
Would love to see Orange is the New Black take Comedy Ensemble. That is a HUGE cast of women who almost all do effective work even in small roles.

YES. BUT... they've already won. And I'd rather give GLOW a chance to shine. It too has a great ensemble of women who did great work.
They do have a "Big collection of stars" nominee - Three Billboards. I'm confident this is your winner.

- Did The Post not send out SAG screeners? Hanks and Streep will be too irresistible to Oscar. They're still in.
- I think Daniel Kaluuya might be sneaking his way in as well and I'm not mad about it. It's a formidable performance that's absolutely all in the eyes.
- It's sad to think Michael Stuhlbarg might be out of the conversation. He's been doing strong work for years and this film gave the best opportunity to honor him.
- All due respect to Miss Mary J. Blige but I think she'll miss Oscar nomination morning. The Academy isn't kind to singer-turn-actor types. But it'll make room for another women of color, thankfully. Either the dynamic Tiffany Haddish or Hong Chao, who's performance I haven't seen yet, but I'd be elated to see anyway as she's an Asian non-celebrity somehow making her way into the conversation. Maybe it's #asiangirlmagic???
Rami: They're not THAT resistant. Cher got two nominations and a win in the 80s. Burl Ives won in the 50s. Their resistance isn't to ALL singers turned actors...it's to rock stars turned actors, specifically. Bowie alone should have been nominated at least once, and...yeah, I'm sad now. (And, no, Jared Leto doesn't count. He's an actor turned rock star.)
Dame Judi's somewhat surprise nomination means there are more British actresses in the Best Actress category (two; Sally and Judi) than American (McDormand)!
(I count Saoirse Ronan as Irish, even tho she has dual nationality).
I'm tooting my own horn as I called Kaluuya and Dench. Didn't expect it'd be at the expense of Streep though.
I think your bias is speaking right now. Bening and Gyllenhaal are done for this year. The type of performances and films that show up later after being passed over are not them.
I think The Post didn't reach enough voters in time, happens a lot with late December releases. Though still fully expect it to be in contention, and as someone who thought Dench would get in here I think she makes space for Streep.
Kaluuya is in a BP frontrunner, he'll make it. It's Washington who I think makes space for Day-Lewis.
No clue in supporting actor. Carell is the early type of release that does well here but doesn't go all the way. So I think he's out. Thinking so is Harrelson but wouldn't be surprised to see him make it. No clue who makes it in though, CMBYN is starting to stumble.
Chau is excelling in a film that hasn't even come out. I think people are underestimating her chances. Could see those exact same five translating to the Oscars, depending on how much they did Shape of Water and pull along Spencer. Sadly with a snub here, Haddish looks done.
Also as expected, the Best Picture win narrows down to Lady Bird, Get Out and Three Billboards and once again I'll say it's going to be Get Out.
The accelerated schedule for awards season and critics/guilds trying to be first really messes everything up. Even with a 12/31 cutoff, films need to be screened and/or released before December to be in strong contention for these awards. I have a feeling Phantom Thread will have a stronger showing at the Oscars since members will have had time to see it.
If it resonates with audiences, my money is still on The Post. It has the right message, big stars, and it's a Spielberg film.
Color me shocked if Three Billboards won best picture. It's messy and deeply unsatisfying.
I could maybe see The Shape of Water winning, if they wanted to go with an offbeat film like The Artist. But I have yet to see any evidence that movie is going to be a hit.
Lady Bird. Sigh. I liked it like everyone, but best picture of the year? Would also be shocked.

Count me in with the others who think Lucas Hedges should be in the conversation as Best Supporting Act for Lady Bird. His big scene could have been a maudlin embarrassment, but instead was the emotional high point of the whole movie for me.
Hedges, like the rest of the cast that isn't Ronan or Metcalf, just doesn't have a big enough part. Which is not a slight toward the film/script, it just makes it difficult to single him out. For instance, I think Chalamet and Letts are equally superb in the film.
I don't get the nominations for Millie Bobby Brown. She is very good in STRANGER THINGS, but so are the boys. I don't like to pick on a kid, but I really don't see why she is been singled out for nominations

Since SAG's inception, don't believe anyone has gone on to win the Best Actress Oscar without a nomination here. But surely this doesn't mean the end for Meryl's chances at a fourth?
Interesting that this could mean Frances McDormand may be the first to win two in film Best Actress at SAG.

Thank you Steve. I love Bening but let be honests, the film is done. No GG either (When SPC has strong links there), no high profile screener, no talk of "poor overdue Bening". Equal to Gyllenhaal. I said this before,,but if the SAG, with tolerance of huge flops really snubbed his film, there's no hope for relevance with a September BO flop and lack of awareness. This isn't a year like Tommy Lee Jones had in 2007. Time to leave bias
@Al It definitely puts a bump, and a big one. Not just in Actress, in Actor. The only people to have won Oscars after being passed on by SAG are Marcia Gay Harden and Christoph Waltz, so it doesn't look good for her.

There are always surprise nominations, including for people who didn't get precursors, but a September flop that stars a famous leading man that even the Globes passed for is not one of those. It would be someone either in A. a Best Picture frontrunner (Michael Shannon, again) or B. with other categories going for it (Call Me By Your Name's Stuhlbarg)
But Meryl wasn't "passed on" so to speak, it was an actual technical issue. That makes The Post and her still more in the game than they would be in other years especially with how crazy this season is.

Exactly. Surprise nominations on Oscar morning are many times performances/films released later that voters had time to catch up on and discover and love (think Rampling in 45 Years) or best picture heat (because there’s no other way Jacki Weaver would’ve been nominated for Silvet Linings Playbook).
Shannon and Spencer benefit from this, as well as Day-Lewis and Manville and everyone involved with The Post.
Nice to see Lauras nominated. I especially like the nomination for the Linney version for her continued superb work, although Ozark was nothing too special as a series.
Yay! No Meryl! But I would trade Dench for Cynthia Nixon whom I think gave one of the best performances this year. Yay, no Meryl!

All these nominations are keeping me on my toes! So relieved that Lady Bird and Get Out's ensembles were nominated. I still don't understand the appeal of Three Billboards though. I feel like we've seen these archetype performances from the three leads (WHO I LOVE!!!) before. When there are so many other performances not being recognized.

Happy to see others with some love for Hedges in LADY BIRD. For such a young actor to come off a breakthrough, Oscar-nominated role and then top it the next year? Incredible. He'll be someone years from now we'll all wonder how he never got any awards notice for this role.
