Maybe I’m in a bubble, but who’s fighting Kieran there. It seems to me that Gump and Braveheart get the no respect they deserve in film circles.
Mike - you're definitely in a bubble. stay there. i have made a home there. it's beautiful. the world at large REALLY REALLY still loves Braveheart and Forrest Gump.
My brother glories in being a Jebediah Atkinson about movies in general, but even he was shocked this Thanksgiving when my sister and I agreed that Braveheart isn't very good. I think Braveheart is still generally well-regarded by society, even if it isn't in smaller films circles.
As for those other four movies, I like them all with various reservations.
In fact, "The English Patient," "Titanic," and "Shakespeare in Love" are among the very best winners of the 90s, a decade with a strong slate overall. I thing I would actually rank the first film at the top.
Jonathan: just rewatched The English Patient and it holds up beautifully.
I have seen all the winners for the 90's and they are all impressive. I wouldn't characterize them as the worst but maybe the weakest in my opinion would be Dances with Wolves or Braveheart.
I don't mean to get killed, but I just don't understand all the buzz around Margot Robbie ("I, Tonya")... I mean, she's good (not that great), but people are talking about her like she was overdue (and they recall THE WOLF OF WALL STREET and even SUICIDE SQUAD).
And then there are "never-nominated" great young actresses (with or under 35 years old) who have never been part of the nominees shortlist in spite of great performances and amazing careers:
- Greta Gerwig
- Scarlett Johansson
- Emily Blunt
- Kirsten Dunst
- Léa Seydoux
- Mia Wasikowska
- Elle Fanning
- and even Kristen Stewart

Ed -- yeah, i dont get it either but it often happens with "sexy" actresses who become big stars quickly and then show a bit of range. It happened to Scarlett too but people moved around from the 'she's overdue' thing before she was ever nominated (probably due to too many franchise films.
No need to come for "Forrest Gump" - I couldn't care less what anyone says, it's a great, timeless movie that maybe shouldn't have won everything it did, but doesn't get the respect it deserves.
Ed- I know right. It kills me that scar jo and dunst are nomination-less despite STELLAR work in their careers. Especially Dunst, because I feel that while Scar Jo is still actively working in films and a nomination/win may happen soon , Dunst takes her time with picking projects and She’s a stellar actress.
Also how similar are their careers, both started as child actors, both found their breakthrough as adult actresses with coppola, both found super mainstream success in marvel franchises as redheads no less, both found themselves in lesser crowe efforts where the male lead is trying to figure himself out.

She was the hit girl back in the day of Lost In Translation (2003) and Woody Allen movies and then she reached another career high point with Avengers (2012) and some acclaimed sci-fi indie movies. But if we look at her resume she could be a 4 or 5 times Oscar nominee: Lost In Translation (2003), Match Point (2005), Her (2013), Under the Skin (2014) and you can count Girl With a Pearl Earring (2003/04) or Don Jon (2013) as extra-options. Such a damn good actress!
