Baywatch Superbowl Ad

Manuel here bringing you the one gif from the Baywatch Super Bowl ad sure to make your Monday all that brighter...

That's from the teaser trailer below which at least gives us some inkling as to the tone of the film. As has been the case with most successful TV-show-to-blockbusters formula (see: Charlie's Angels, 21 Jump Street) they're clearly going for self-aware humor, calling out two of the show's signature moves: the slow-mo running and the way these lifeguards think of themselves as cops.

For the briefest of looks into this summer tentpole, check out the full Super Bowl ad below:

How excited are you for Zac and Dwayne's take on this 90s classic?

Whoa, did they green screen the beach behind them in the one shot? The butt shot looks real, but the background in the wide shot looks super fake.

Manuel, did you say tentpole?

" the briefest of looks into this summer tentpole" - I see what you did there

As for the movie, meh. I can't quite put my finger on it, but something about American men's uncomfortable-ness with Speedos reads as homophobic to me. And if not homophobic, then just downright prudish. I'm not saying all men should wear them (I don't), but the men on the original show DID wear them sometimes, so it just seems so juvenile to feature one only as a joke. Unless, of course, he ends up wearing them in a really long scene - THEN it might be worth watching.

DJDeeJay: Except, they didn't even really joke about it being a speedo. They joked about it violating the flag code.

February 6, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

@Volvagia - I guess that's one way to look at it, but do you really think they would've made that joke if he was wearing American flag swimming shorts? Doubtful.

February 6, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterDJDeeJay

DJDeeJay: I admit I probably would have had it be Flag Shorts and not a Flag Speedo (just to make sure people didn't confuse the joke), but that's fair.

This movie should be in IMAX 3 -D

Why is the beach green-screened in that shot?

Speedos are nowadays exclusively gay men/older men thing. Straight men for all of their beachside peacocking with their gym-ripped bodies are nevertheless strangely prudish about their lower halves and for some reason need to wear boardshorts that go to the knee.

Speedos = gay men / older men / European men / athletes

"straight men for all of their beachside peacocking with their gym-ripped bodies are nevertheless strangely prudish about their lower halves and for some reason need to wear boardshorts that go to the knee."

It's even stranger when you consider the emphasis on not skipping leg day nowadays yet they rarely wear shorts or swim trunks short enough to show the quads they work so hard on .

Well, at least it's not the new Transformers.... that was, as usual, shit.

This movie will be the La La Land in the next edition of the Golden Raspberry Awards.

February 7, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterFrederic

Frederic: I doubt this will even be a nominee. This doesn't exactly look "good", but to pretend it looks "Razzie Bad" is pushing it.

February 7, 2017 | Unregistered CommenterVolvagia

Volvagia,
Dirty Grandpa, Zoolander 2, Alice Through the Looking Glass and Snowden are some of the nominees this year. Baywatch seems to be the perfect Raspberry bait. Not that I want it to be bad, but the ad... Well, I hope I'm wrong and maybe it's good.
Let's see.
