Cannes Poster Unveiled

Claudia Cardinale is this poster girl for the 70th edition of the Cannes Film Festival (May 17th-28th)

The Italian star, whose credits include classics like 8½, Once Upon a Time in the West, The Leopard, Big Deal on Madonna Street, and Rocco and His Brothers is 78 now. She's still a regular on film festival red carpets. This photo of her was taken in 1959 when she was just 21 (and people are not happy that it's been reportedly airbrushed to make her thighs smaller.)

More news: Another Italian goddess Monica Bellucci has been named the Mistress of Ceremonies; Romanian auteur Cristian Mungiu (4 Months 3 Weeks and 2 Days,  Beyond the Hills) will preside over the Cinéfondation and Short Films Jury; and the Main Competition Jury president is Spain's Pedro Almodóvar. We don't yet know what the films he'll be judging are (and who will be on his jury) but speculated titles include Alexander Payne's Downsizing, Todd Haynes Wonderstruck, Michael Haneke's Happy End, and Sofia Coppola's The Beguiled

Another gorgeous Cannes poster. I don't know what went wrong with the one last year, but the past decade has been chock-full of iconic imagery blended with beautiful artistry (the Faye Dunaway one in 2011 and Paul Newman & Joanne Woodward one in 2013 are my favorites).

So, next year will they put Sean Connery on the poster and airbrush his chest? Claudia's poster is beautiful, but revisionist airbrushing is ridiculous and a little disturbing.

@Peggy Sue: thanks for finding and posting that. I thought the poster looked pretty fun, but the original picture is terrific. It would have been a great poster without any body alteration.

Why are the French, so pro-wine and pro-butter, applying dumb American anorexic standards to promote their biggest film event?

You're welcome!

I usually laugh when the retouch is super obvious but this one got me really worried/mad. It's so subtle it's kind of perverse.

I hope for The Beguiled's sake that it'll screen out of competition -
'cause in competition it'll be torn apart by critics - if the trailer is anything to go by!

It should play out of competition.

What I always liked about Claudia Cardinale in the films I saw her in, was her sense of self-possession. It was a new idea for me that just because someone is charmed by you, it doesn't place you under any obligation whatsoever. I was fascinated by the unapologetic, matter-of-fact way she said "no".

And all the other things people said too: beautiful and fun and radiant. When I read she was a long-time feminist, I thought, yes, that makes perfect sense.

She is a wonderful choice for this year's Cannes Festival poster.

Kidman should eventually win the Actress prize at Cannes.

I have been waiting so long for Downsizing. Haneke usually gives me a horrible headache.

I hope Annihilation at least screens.

Ugh. That photoshopping is so insulting. Like, she's good enough to use for promotion but just quite perfect enough for your standards? I would love for the person responsible for this decision to get publicly called out.

I can't believe so much is being made of the minor airbrushing here. No one says a word about the extensive work done on all those cosmetics ads which are sometimes really ridiclous, especially on the women over forty.
